I feel like I say this a lot, but what's amazing is that the animal has no idea that it's so perfectly camouflaged. The undirected process of evolution works as a pretty amazing optimization algorithm. Not great news for the geckos that don't make the 'cut', but hey, birds gotta eat.

Reviewer: differential gene expression analysis from RNAseq data is hypothetical. Unless ofcourse we construct a million mutants to show genetic basis. Will spend the next 10 years getting natural isolates amenable to genetics. High time microbiology catches up with ecology.
