This "controversy" around authors using big words (and that's supposedly ableism) reminds me of the time I was told off by a guy for using the phrase "language convention". He thought I was showing off. This was during a ->linguistics<- class. We're cooked.

Also, I didn't give up on the project. I went back to uni and is currently finishing up my bachelor, hence the lack of updates.

I'm thinking about going for a more low-poly style with old school-style vertex painted models (to make things more manageable). Another victim of modern graphics, there's something about it. #gamedev #gameart

I'm *this* close to giving up on this whole project. Creating a whole system of persistent actors with AI schedules that are loaded at all times and can traverse between cell boundaries seamlessly = piece of cake. Making an undo action register properly in an editor module = impossible. #gamedev

Currently in the process of moving the whole thing to a plugin instead. That way I can more easily seperate editor and runtime parts of the framework. I've spent the last few weeks extending the DataTable asset to contain the reference tracking inside of it instead of a seperate system. #gamedev

If you are new to C++ and get a cryptic linker error that is obviously not meant to be read by humans. I don't blame you if you decide to just say fuck it and never touch C++ again in your life. I'm convinced the error messaging have repelled a significant amount of people for using it. #gamedev

Did a small test run on Flax engine again just to see how far it has come. It's still impressive for what it is (the compile times are tiny compared to Unreal which is a huge plus). What they sorely need though is a proper UX designer. Some parts are still just as confusing and opaque. #gamedev

I shouild probably mention that I don't mean THAT kind of AI, I mean normal AI we used to have in games (like, people moving and opening doors and shit). Maybe I should say behaviour. LLMs have destroyed our language. #gamedev

Saving dead characters now work properly. I spent some time trying to keep save game file size as low as possible. With some tricks I managed to squeeze the data down from hundreds of kb of Items, containers, harvestable plants and NPCs (with their skeleton data) down to just a few kb. #gamedev

Got schedules to work. The guy in front has a place he needs to be at a certain time. The two other guys are told to follow him during certain hours. At this point (when recording), they have walked from the other side of the map. All while the proxy system loads/unloads them #gamedev #unrealengine

It's such a hassle to work with the world cells in my game (having to create them manually...), so I decided to create a little tool that automates the process. This took some Unreal Black Magic(tm) to get working but here we are. #gamedev #unrealengine

The dialogue system is now completed. For those curious about it works, it's just a bunch of IDs that are connected. But the thing that took some thinking was how to do conditions/events. You can create any number of those from a base and fill them with whatever data you want to check: #gamedev

Am I the only one that thinks this kind of sucks? Not that I don't want a new Fallout (I love Fallout), but Obsidian worked really hard to create IPs of their own to work on and now Microsoft pulls the plug on their own game to have them do the same thing they tried to escape from 10 years ago.

Just found out that the dialogue plugin that I used would not be able to interface properly with my reference handling system. I need to create my own in order to not have dialogue conditions spaz out if they hold an outdated reference. Current progress: #gamdev #unrealengine

One thing that always bugged me in Unreal is that changes to DataTable rows don't propagate (which makes total sense btw). So, I decided to create a reference tracker that automatically set row names to the correct one when discrepancies are found. No more headaches! #gamedev #unrealengine

Equipment enchantments are now completely implemented. You can mix and match different kinds of enchantment types and triggers (with some restrictions). e.g. Putting a 'On-Hit' on a weapon triggers when you attack. On shields, it triggers when you block. Target can be either self or them. #gamedev

Working on the persistence system for NPCs. I can now load/unload actors and proxies properly. This will allow me to have characters move about all the time, even on the other side of the map. The proxies contain no assets, only a reference. And a simplified AI-routine for schedules. #gamedev #rpg

It's funny seeing people saying "it's such a relief that Godot changed its mind on AI". They didn't, this was already their stance. This goes to show how a game of telephone get people riled up over nothing and then calmed down again by *checks notes* getting the same answer twice. #gamedev #godot

For years we have been overwhelmed by the volume of code contributions we have to review, especially from new contributors. AI has made the problem much worse. That's why we are taking steps to reduce the burden on maintainers while still welcoming new contributors: godotengine.org/article/cont...

There's no practical difference between using genAI and sharing it, and having friends over and sharing *your* favourite music from a CD-rack. People who call themselves AI-artists are fooling themselves. You're not creating anything), you are curating to an audience of one (yourself). #gamedev

I guess I'm accidentally lucky because I'm creating and performance profiling my game on an eleven year old computer. If it works on this old junk it'll probably work on most computers people use nowadays.

The thing with the Godot AI thing going on is that even if they had a really strong policy against AI it wouldn't change anything in regards to reactions to AI usage. I bet my balls that it would have only changed from "why are you allowing it?" to "How come you didn't catch it?" #gamedev #godot

I see some concerns raised about Godot's policy on contributions using AI. TL;DR: Godot isn't vibe-coded. As a whole, the Godot foundation and maintainers are fairly critical of AI usage, and don't make nor accept vibe-coded contributions. Godot doesn't include AI features nor intends to add any.
Godot's current policy on AI-assisted contributions reads like this:

"The use of AI to contribute to Godot is discouraged, and contributions made entirely by AI are prohibited.

We acknowledge that AI can be useful, but we are convinced that human effort results in better and more relevant contributions.

If you do use AI, we expect that you put in effort to proofread and improve anything it generates, and that you disclose what you used AI for. As maintainers spend significant time reviewing your code, please make sure that the code you submit is well-tested and functional. Please be respectful of their time and only submit something you have put thought and effort into."

The absolute worst writing trend in the last 10 years or so: characters talking to themselves/commenting the scene during gameplay. Cut that shit out, it's embarrassing. It's never funny, it's never witty. It's just annoying. Writers who do that should have their license revoked.

One of the biggest blunders Epic made here is depreciating blueprints. If you care about actual Democratization of game development, this is a huge blow to that! It was a way for newcomers to code in a genuinely accessible way, one that they could further build their skill development off from.

Here's a good, nuanced video that's raising a larger problem with AI. Where, in 20 years time, are you going to find the senior developers when all juniors have been replaced? What AI-pushers are hoping to happen, I assume, is that AI will in time replace seniors as well. But that's a BIG if.

I think it's wise to take some time to really understand what parts of the world actually need to be explained. If that gauge is not working or not calibrated you can easily fall into the trap of wanting to explain everything. Teaching history helped me with this. It's remarkably similar in a sense.
