It's been nearly a year since I last published a blog about Mini-Whiteboards and how I feel about them. Since then, as a school, we have done lots of work on routines around our use of MWBs. Have a read of my 2.0 blog to see our Agreed Consistencies around this brilliant classroom tool.

Such a lovely atmosphere – bespoke, personal and, most importantly, creating time for genuine conversations and building authentic relationships. ❤️ @jon_hutchinson @edvainker.bsky.social

Teachers made sure they spoke to everyone, especially families who really need us. Anna and I were there too, mingling, answering questions and making the tea. Parents could also make a donation for any pre-loved uniform they needed – and we’ve raised £200 so far!

Parents came along for a cuppa and a biscuit, chatted informally with teachers, looked at book spines and explored excellent examples of work from the previous year – giving them a much clearer picture of end-of-year expectations.

As part of our partnership with Reach Foundation & rethinking parent events to make them more relational, we have changed our Meet the Teacher meetings this year. Info covering routines, expectations & a typical school day were shared beforehand, so we created more of a marketplace.

She’s pulled snippets directly from our Agreed Consistencies Handbook, which is linked on every staff computer. Minimal friction. Minimal workload. Codified expectations kept high profile. A simple way to keep reading (in all its forms) right at the heart of what we do.

It’s centrally placed so everyone sees it and sits alongside our SDP board in the PPA room — more on that another time! This week, @MissBunyan has reminded everyone of our book corner expectations, using a WAGOLL from one of our Year 3 classes.

Nothing flashy about this post — just a slice of everyday Primary leadership. Here at Lingfield, we have an FYI board in our staffroom. It acts as a small nudge towards best practice, as well as a place to gather staff feedback, ideas and suggestions.

A little bit of presentation polishing ready for our first ever slot at @researchEd on Saturday. And The Educakers can’t do their work without some rather large slices of cake and copious amounts of tea and coffee (all squeezed onto a very small table).

It's that time of year again when the writing moderation emails have dropped into Head's inboxes. I wrote this blog last year sharing my experience as a Year 6 teacher and previous moderator for Surrey so I thought I would share it again in case it helps anyone! You've got this! 💪Anna.

The team should be incredibly proud of how far the writing has come. There’s a real buzz in the room—children sharing their work, suggesting edits, and spotting great techniques under the visualiser. This is what it’s all about.😀 Anna

The pure elation I had looking around the room last week: heads down, eyes focused, pages being produced. Not pages for the sake of it or rambling writing, but thoughtful, detailed pieces—full of excitement and genuine engagement in the writing process.

Over the last 3 years, we’ve introduced & developed our use of The Write Stuff by @janeconsidineedu.bsky.social & the impact on the children’s writing has been great. Previously, stamina was a real challenge—independent writes were short and the writing process felt really difficult.

They are pricier but we haven't had any snapped in half so far... they are very chunky. Sounds like I'm selling them... I'm not and get no commission 😂 We did try it with one class first so make sure we were happy before we bough loads. Hope that helps. Anna

They're definitely worth a go! I know every school is different & they won't be perfect for everyone, but for us they're a game changer... no lost lids, no drying out, & we're half way through the year and no new pencils have been bought. Everyone still has the box they started with in September.

Vocabulary is displayed in classrooms so children can revisit and use it in context. We’ve now extended this further: key words from across Reception and KS1 are displayed in the corridors to encourage retrieval.

One aspect of this is that each week, teachers deliver focused “Words of the Week” lessons, carefully linked to current learning. Children are taught the new vocabulary with clear definitions alongside dual coding from The Noun Project to ensure consistency.

One of our key SDP priorities this year is vocabulary development. We call it 'Words, Words, Words'. Using Primary Reading Simplified by @suchmo83.bsky.social as one of our key texts, we’ve developed our approach to explicitly teaching vocabulary across EYFS and KS1.

Today it was great to see Year 6 using resources to explore what actually happens when finding the mean average. Physically redistributing amounts really helped the children to see that the mean is about equal sharing of the total — not just “add and divide”
