In the presidential immunity case, the court considered a hypothetical of a president ordering Navy Seals to assassinate an American political rival. Trump's lawyer argued unambiguously yes, since it'd be an "official act." The Roberts Court ruled in his favor, 6-3. Why wouldn't Trump believe this?

It's pretty funny to say this right now, when the world's dictators and aspiring dictators are demonstrating their extreme non-benevolence and commensurate inefficiency. Was invading Ukraine efficient? Were the gulf princelings cheerleading the disastrous Iran war efficient?

First-past-the-post is a democratic abomination. It's an insane way to hold elections and the politicians who continually refuse to get rid of it are selfish assholes. Every single one of them.

This is not going to happen for the same reason that no one uses conservapedia or grokipedia for anything. It's just fake doom-mongering that ignores the fact that money overrules everything in conservative culture (which is not really a thing anyway, conservatism has no culture).

Given social media discourse over the last few days, it really looks like "kill all disabled people or at least put them into camps or whatever, don't care, don't even want to hear that they exist" is the one issue that is the most popular across the political spectrum.

True. Everyone has a concentric circle of people they care about, beyond which they simply never think about. Human nature is fundamentally exclusionary, no matter what stories people tell about themselves.

And add to that all the parasitic industries that only leech off the economy, they would all be wiped out if they couldn't find people to work for them. A huge % of modern economies is entirely wasted simply to support forced employment. Not illegal, but just as harmful.

Given how weakly humanity is aligned with our so-called "values", and we barely punish most transgressions, AI alignment is not even especially desirable. AI will need to be far better at it. Because we never will.

There's something disturbing in the whole issue of who deserves credit for the Navier-Strokes discovery, and how almost everyone accepts that anyone who does science is doing it for the name recognition, not for the advancement of humanity. It's fully accepted to be true, not disputed at all.

This is a liberal equivalent of the conservative trope of the "good old days" when things were easier and more fun and life was more colorful and people respected each other. Science as a process is amazing, but academia is human institutions with human biases and it was never that good.

Unsettling to live through an era where Truly Bad, as in real Nazi stuff, is treated as not actually bad, mostly a curiosity, just another policy, look what you made them do, while what gets the up-in-arms treatment is minor scandal, titillation, someone said something about what someone else said.

As much as Google looks silly here, countries do commonly have their own names for geographical features, and companies located in those countries will usually comply. The problem here is a system of government so broken it allows it to happen for such stupid reasons.

They're doing this because they expect there will be no consequences. There will be no consequences. Therefore they and more people will keep doing corrupt things. The same corrupt things. More corrupt things. Old corrupt things.

Dolly Parton's passing is effortlessly proving that if you spend your life being nice and kind and generous instead of mean and cruel and selfish, then apologists for mean cruel selfish bullies won't have to go around scolding people for cheering when you die, because there will be no cheering.

Lots of snarky comments mocking this because cars/bicycles/whatever-on-wheels have been able to do this for a long time. Nature doesn't do wheels at this scale, they're unnatural. Animals walk, we don't roll. This is a monumental achievement, and it's sad that so many are missing it.

Social media is generically blamed for making people worse in recent years, but the fact that it allows us all to view how evil humans can be, on a daily basis, is not given the prominence it deserves. It's just a normal reaction to distrust others, anyone, seeing all of this playing out.

The major counterpart to Mr Rogers' "look for the helpers", when applied to bad people, is "look for the enablers". It's the enablers that make this possible. They can never be rehabilitated. A king can forego a throne, but not a court. Aim for the balls.

The thing about the very obscenely rich is that they have no idea what $10 can buy, and they have no idea, because they are compete detached from reality. They are insane *as a consequence* of being very obscenely rich, and no society can function when crazies have that much power.

I'm a weirdo who thinks it's a much bigger problem that people with the most power hallucinate all the fucking time, make decisions based on those hallucinations, and that it's considered completely normal. AIs will hallucinate less over time. This is not the case for people.

The Decline @thedekeline.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
The fact that more people get extra mad about AI hallucinations when human hallucinations basically corrupt all human institutions and affairs simply because they're that damn common, is genuinely impressive. Humans getting mad at imaginary problems while ignoring real ones is why life sucks.

One of the funniest bits that people in power do is talk about preventing panic, or some dumb shit like that. If there's anything humans are very good at, it's walking firmly and confidently straight into a crisis we made ourselves with open eyes and never be bothered about it until it's too late.

Mainstream Respectable opinion is that people joking about a bad person's death represents a culture of cruelty, but really it represents a culture of impunity. It's a coping mechanism for watching someone do evil their whole life and never seeing consequences

This point needs to be made over and again: The main purpose of wealth taxes should not be to raise revenue. That's a small and secondary benefit. The main purpose should be to *reduce the fortunes of the ultrarich*. Why? Because those fortunes present a massive threat to democracy and public life.

The funny thing about "LLMs are unreliable and lie a lot" is that, while correct, humans are so much worse in every regard that it's not even a contest. Expert humans, in perfect conditions? Usually. In almost every other condition, humans are mostly unreliable. Talk about a giant self-own.

It's an objective fact that Elon Musk is a mass murderer. He intentionally caused the deaths of millions of people. There's no caveats to this, no alternative explanations, no defenses, no missing context; that was the sole reason for doing what he did.

Musk's gutting of USAID killed hundreds of thousands, possibly millions. He has used his net worth to stoke hatred against people he dislikes and to fuel white supremacy. So no, I don't think he is uplifting humanity.
Mr. Musk’s allies said his net worth was justified by his impact, providing an example and incentive for those who want to build successful companies. Mr. Diamandis, the head of the XPrize Foundation, an organization that holds contests to encourage scientific breakthroughs, said Tesla and SpaceX were “raising the floor.”

“The fruits of his labor are making him into a trillionaire, and they’re uplifting humanity,” Mr. Diamandis said.

Conservatives have spent the past twenty years gaming web 2.0 platforms to create the *appearance* of broad consensus around their rancid ideas. Downstream of that is the sincere belief this has ended up fostering that their beliefs really are popular, and that "woke" CEOs keep them marginalized
