This raises the ? of why do people give up agency, sense of self, and discernment to influencers who shouldn’t be telling people how to live their lives. I think @kkdumez.bsky.social is right in connecting the dots to Robert Lifton’s work on totalism. It’s a system that demands total obedience.

Yes. On the next page 👇 “Inerrancy may not have been able to grant evangelicals the unadulterated interpretive and epistemic certainty its proponents desired, but in the end, it gave them something just as powerful. It gave them a weapon.” That last sentence…

“Now, forty years later, we might be forgiven for asking, What if we do not come to the same conclusion? What if our interpretation differs from that of these 250 predominately white, American men?” “Desiring Certainty: The Making of Biblical Inerrancy” Jason A. Hentschel, pgs. 147, 149-150
If we can summarize the last seventy-five years of the Battle for the Bible, the most compelling through line is not so much what the doctrine of biblical inerrancy is but what it does. Inerrancy provides a psychological certainty that what we believe to be true is really true, and it polices the boundaries of that truth. As such, inerrancy is not so much about truth. Nor is it about knowledge. It is about authority and power, specifically the authority and power to determine who gets to say what the Bible means and who does not. That the ICBI began in 1978 with the intention of defending an inerrant Bible only to confidently end in 1986 with a laundry list of what that inerrant Bible teaches, particularly on topics then under current debate, is telling. What results from the council's tenure is not a fair argument for one interpretation of the Bible over another but anattack on the perceived character and faithlessness of anyone who disagrees with these final findings. This can be seen in the last lines of the Chicago Statement on Biblical Application, where the council anticipates the question of whose interpretation is valid: "The two hundred and fifty of us who have met at the Summit believe that anyone who allows Scripture to deliver its own message on these matters will end up approximately where we stand ourselves."
Now, forty years later, we might be forgiven for asking, What if we do not come to the same conclusion? What if our interpretation differs from that of these 250 predominately white, American men?

To the “Christians” who condone every evil and sadistic action taken against immigrants because “they’re illegal,” here is what the Bible says about how foreigners should and should not be treated. You know, the Book you claim to believe in.

From page 63 in “Live Laugh Love” re: Frank Buchman founder of the Oxford Group and Moral Re-Armament. There is nothing new under the sun. #livelaughlovebook #historyrhymes @kkdumez.bsky.social
Seeking power, Buchman was drawn to men with power. In the 1930s, that meant men like Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. Buchman and his followers had no problem with dictatorship as long as the dictator was brought under the Spirit of God. "Through such a man God could control a nation overnight and solve every last bewildering problem," Buchman calculated.

Before asking whether someone's response to injustice is appropriate, perhaps we should ask what they had to endure to become angry in the first place.

An evangelical cultural apologetic cannot be built on the anecdotal fallacy. Your exceptional personal experience does not give you cause to deny and dismiss the experience of others or the overwhelming evidence of history.

Why is “Well, that isn’t/wasn’t *my* experience…” a gut response when hearing/reading something uncomfortable? Why shouldn’t someone else’s experience be different? After all, it’s a different person. It’s only a problem if one experience is normative and the rest aren’t.

We should be far less interested in whether Christianity is losing influence and far more interested in why some believed following Jesus required so much influence in the first place.

Covid is a mass disabling event. Just because you had it and were “fine” doesn’t mean there isn’t silent damage in your body. Multiple infections increase the risk of long covid … you never know which one could leave you disabled. This is why we mask. Why we clean the air.
