In his speech he said that No.10 North would tackle the British housing crisis. But, of course, housing is a devolved 'England-only' portfolio, so No.10 North would only be responsible for English housing (unless he plans to abolish the Scottish, Welsh parliaments).

If you are looking for an example of Anglo-centric British nationalism, then Andy Burnham provides it. His "Number 10 North" will be based in Manchester, in the southern half of Great Britain.

The man most likely to be the next prime minister says his devolution plans would "drive good growth in every postcode".

Football is rare in giving most of us a less complicated sense of a shared Englishness. Steve Rose referees the tug-of-war over the St George's flag: several voices also making the case for pride, not prejudice on the Kirby Estate as well as the Katwala household www.theguardian.com/society/2026...

Cross purposes: how the England flag got caught in a tug-of-war between rightwing nationalists and football fans
Last summer the St George’s cross was co-opted by anti-immigrant groups. Now, as the World Cup begins, some communities are reclaiming it as a symbol of a very different sort of pride

There is an inclusive Englishness. England is a successful, multicultural society. There is just no political articulation of inclusive Englishness because 'Britishness' is the favoured identity of those who govern England.

As Chancellor and PM, Brown went on to claim distinctly English things as British. For Brown Magna Carta and Bill of Rights are British but Declaration of Arbroath and Claim of Right are Scottish. This is basically Anglo-centric British nationalism, which has become the State model of Unionism.

See "The Politics of Nationalism and Devolution", Brown and Drucker, 1980. They made no similar claims about England, so therefore England must be indistinct from Britain, according to Brown and Drucker.

That explanation wasn't in the official blurb on devolution, though some alluded to it. Gordon Brown, for example, said that the Scottish and Welsh nations had an identities distinct from Britain and required national parliaments to reflect that.

"New Labour has become the most bossy prober into lives. It comes across as very anti-English. The first thing they did was set up a parliament for the Welsh and one for the Scots. England is Britain according to them." - David Hockney, 1937-2026

Supporting Turkey's membership was seen as a way to dilute 'superstate' ambitions and keep the EU focused on economic cooperation rather than political union. The UK was invested in the EU but not in political integration like other members.

If there are race riots/pogroms in England the media will jump in to blame it on English nationalism. The same things happen in Scotland and Northern Ireland, perpetrated by British nationalists/Unionists/Loyalists and the media is suddenly circumspect about blaming nationalism.

Anglo-centric British nationalism. "Britain is a great nation. A country where we can watch the most exciting sport - Wimbledon, the FA Cup, Test Cricket. Where you can listen to the best pop music - the Beatles, Blur, Oasis and Simply Red". - Tony Blair, Daily Express, 3rd January 1996.

England centralises power: Labour learns nothing from Scotland. Labour intends to ditch local democracy and move power closer to Parliament. Scotland did this years ago. The discussion should be how to move democracy CLOSER to the people, not removing it. buildlocal.scot

Why cannot Labour explicitly talk abt England? A majority of Starmer's milestones unveiled today are England specific. Yet this is not explicit in the presentation & politics today. Not talking abt England confuses voters & leaves the populist right to claim this territory. #C4News

The Barnett Formula ensures that Scotland and Northern Ireland receive far more than England and Wales, irrespective of what each nation contributes. It's unfair. It's long past time we moved to a needs-based funding formula or allowed each nation to finance itself through taxation.

But positive examples might include Caroline Lucas' Another England, Gareth Southgate's various words about an inclusive England team, Raise the Flag, Three Acres and a Cow, the small community events on St George's Day, etc.

The Campaign for an English Parliament @thecep.bsky.social · 30/11/2024
Positive examples are few and far between because the body politic in England sees Britishness as the legitimate civic nationalism, and English nationalism as a reaction to (or threat to) that. So politicians just don't speak of England.

The Campaign for an English Parliament @thecep.bsky.social · 30/11/2024
They're not really English nationalists. There are, however, some of us who do think that England should be a normal nation with its own democracy, institutions, anthem, first minister, etc.

The Campaign for an English Parliament @thecep.bsky.social · 30/11/2024
They're Anglo-centric British nationalists. And that includes Scots like Gordon Brown. They don't have a discrete sense of England and think that England having a discrete political sense of itself would undermine Britain and Britishness. In that respect they're anti-English.
