During the Renaissance, people in Venice would vote by dropping little balls into an urn. The Italian word for “little ball” is ‘ballotta.’ Now any kind of secret voting, by ball, piece of paper, or voting machine, is called a ‘ballot.’

We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: - It’s ‘voilà,’ not ‘wallah!’ - It’s ‘a lot,’ not ‘alot.’ - It’s ‘further ado,’ not ‘farther adieu.’ - It’s ‘flesh out,’ not ‘flush out.’ - It’s ‘sneak peek,’ not ‘sneak peak.’ No worries if not!!!

Here ’tis (from Theodore Bernstein): “You would not write, ‘Three inches of snow have fallen,’ because you are not thinking of individual inches; you are thinking of a quantity of snow that accumulates to that depth.”
NUMBER
Some people are very literal-minded about the question of grammatical number; they tend to concentrate on the exact word that they take to be the subject of the sentence, when sometimes they should be looking at the thought that the word or words represent. A woman wrote to criticize a newspaper sentence that read, "A growing number of Germans think there should be more uniformity in their lan-guage." In effect standing over us brandishing a ruler, she wrote: "A number (singular) thinks. Numbers (plural) think." That was, presumably, our lesson for the day.
Wresting the ruler from her hand, the answering letter told her that although number was indeed a singular noun, a number of was equivalent to many or some. The reply went on to tell her that a good rule of thumb was that the number takes a singular verb but a number takes a plural verb. And the same rule of thumb applies to similar words, like variety and total. "The total of unemployed in the town is 31,562," but, "A total of 31,56z are unemployed in the town." And "The variety of birds in the wildlife refuge is remarkable," but, "A variety of birds are found in the wildlife refuge." The phrase a total of is far from being the true subject of its sentence; it is equivalent to a speaker's "er" or a pianist's vamp till ready. Most often it is used because the writer either does not wish to begin the sentence with a numeral or rightly rejects beginning it with a clumsy spelling out of the figure: "Thirty-one thousand five hundred sixty-two."
Mention should be made here of the question of numbers that are to be considered not as expressions of individual units but rather as expressions of an integral quantity.
You would not write, "Three inches of snow have fallen," because you are not thinking of individual inches; you are thinking of a quantity of snow that accumulates to that depth. Likewise you would not write, "About $10,000 were added to the cost of the project," because again you are thinking of a sum of money, not of individual
dollars
