Sam Altman can't even make OpenAI profitable. AI is a money incinerator, not a profit generator. And I doubt that asking a podcaster to pay $20 so you can type a single question into an LLM and foward the results is the key to making it profitable. And yet, my inbox... omg my inbox.

You would be shocked at how many random companies are trying to get me to buy their AI services or sell them my voice. It's so that I had to create an inbox filter to deal with it. Are there really this many people with bad business ideas, or are the big AI companies trying to build fake buzz?

I’ll be honest, I’m super relieved that you guys are excited about this series. It felt like a big stretch. It‘s a lot of dense material, but it’s SO important for understanding the world these figures inhabited, and I’m so grateful that I’ve got an audience that was up for the challenge.

I need a lot of fantasy authors to listen to this episode before worldbuilding their royal courts. The choices available to you are sooooooo much more interesting than the flattened out picture of “single room with people in fancy clothes standing around”.

Also, it doesn't dye well... and if you wanted to be fancy, you'd want deeply colored fabrics. So strolling into court wearing a tunic in a faded wrinkly fabric that people associated with undies would probably result in everyone assuming you'd lost your mind. Or at least had lost your fortune.

Linen for undergarments... but outer garments, like your outer tunic, it would usually be wool. Non-formal occasions were different, but Court required wearing uncomfortable layers. Same applies to today. Suits are expected in Court regardless of how hot it is outside.

I dunno about you, but I just spent far more hours than I want to admit investigating whether linen was appropriate for formal occasions in early 12th century early Anglo Norman society. What a strange life my life has taken. (It wasn't, btw)

I believe it was the episode after Hastings. One account of the death of Harold Godwinson involved an assassination squad, and one of the knights in this group was said to havecut off the king’s “thigh” and rode around showing it off. Thigh was code for something else.
