The year is 1997. I have just finished school and my friend and I are going to bike to the corner store to spend 5 dollars on one cent candy, which we will eat at the playground while sitting on the swings. Life is good.

Groceries now cost a full third of my pay check, I’m losing my family doctor, I have friends who can’t find childcare or mental health help or a job but yeah, sure, let’s build data centres in NL. Everything is great.

Spending hundreds of dollars on food, getting home, and feeling like you have hardly anything at all - week after week - is really infuriating and demoralizing.

I was in my 20s when I realized Canadians measuring distance using time isn’t universal. An American asked me how far away another town was and I said “about twenty minutes” and they were flabbergasted when I didn’t know how many km it was. I dunno man, it’s a 20 minute drive going the speed limit.

In a world where you are expected to be quiet and prioritize comfort over anything else, it is far more valuable to speak truth even in the face of discomfort. Neutrality is a privileged lie we tell ourselves to avoid any of the heavy lifting of living in the world while working to make it better.

the thing about "separating the art from the artist" is that it comes from academic circles where they were trying to separate an artist's views from an interpretation of their work as an intellectual exercise, not as a way to give people moral carte blanche to support shitty people

I feel like this must have been done at some point, response poems are a storied tradition, but anyway I wrote "Margaret, Bringing Fresh Flowers" today and thought I'd share
Uncle Gerard, do you remember how,
when I was a kid, you found me crying
and I told you it didn't seem fair how all the nice leaves
had to die in the winter when I loved them so much;
and you told me, well, it gets worse from here,
and besides, it's not really the leaves,
you're a smart kid, they'll be back next spring,
but in the meantime you're right of course,
all kinds of things are going to die
and die and die and die and die and die,
your whole life, and it doesn't get easier,
it gets harder, because eventually you realize
all those dead hands go down pointing a finger at you,
and that's actually why you're sad, see,
because in a sense you're next,
even if it takes a while for next to get here?
And do you remember
how I said, Jesus Uncle Gerry,
can't a person be sad for a tree sometimes,
just sad about a tree?
Well, anyway,
you were probably right,
and you know this already,
because I tell you this every time I come here
but I suspect it's harder to remember things
where you are now
so I'm telling you again,
just in case.

In St. John’s there exists a concept called “Regatta Roulette” where people stay out late partying the night before the Royal St. John’s Regatta, in hopes the holiday goes ahead, which will not be confirmed until the morning of based on the wind forecast. This occurs in the windiest city in Canada.
