i’m betting it’s gonna be a great show, but it’s just a very frustrating moment in our culture that we can’t just get an original Ryan Coogler sci-fi TV series starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel without it needing the X-Files branding attached.

there are cringeworthy lyrics abound and repetitive notions throughout, but if nothing else, i'm just grateful we've got one more piece of charming William Finn musical wit out in the world.

ben kaye @thebenkaye.bsky.social · 18/09/2026

songs like "My Girlfriend's Dog" and "Verse, Verse, Chorus" are charming enough outside of the pandemic-centric context of the show, but the standouts for me are "Bob Ullman" and "Michael Mandell," two emotional tribute songs that feel like worthy successors to similar songs Finn wrote for ELEGIES.

listening to Danny Ursetti & the late, great William Finn's newly released song cycle ONCE EVERY HUNDRED YEARS. a ludicrous & moving collection of songs, your enjoyment of which likely depends on how allergic you are to songs that frequently contain the words "pandemic," "quarantine," and "COVID."

many musical theater writers have tried over the years to imitate the perfect mix of indie rock, folk, and pop that Duncan Sheik captured with Spring Awakening. no one has even come close. a tragic loss for a medium that has undeniably thrived from his singular sonic alchemy.
