McDonald's is now reportedly pressuring franchisees to use AI to price food. Its CEO raked in $20.6M last year, over 1,000x the median McDonald's worker pay of $19,020. And they remain one of the largest employers of Medicaid and SNAP recipients. I'm not lovin' it.

This is good
Abstract
As fascist politics intensify in the United States and globally, sociology faces renewed questions about how to theorize the fraught relationship between racism, capitalism, empire, and democracy. In this article, we argue that the Black Radical Tradition (BRT) offers sociology a powerful analytic for understanding fascism not as a historical aberration but as a recurring political expression of racial capitalism. Drawing primarily on a close reading of Cedric Robinson’s Black Marxism: The Making of the Black Radical Tradition, we examine the epistemological, political, and world-making dimensions of the BRT and trace how Black radical thinkers theorized fascism within the longer history of racial capitalism. We then consider what deeper engagement the BRT might offer the sociology of race and ethnicity, particularly through transnational and historical relational analyses, as well as expanded attention to consciousness, culture, and collective liberation in moments of societal crisis.

With this monopolized media empire comes not just size but unprecedented power. The power to throw workers under the bus. The power to price-gouge because consumers have few alternatives. The power to decide which stories get told, but more importantly, which stories DON'T get told.

This passage from Black Power by Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture) & Charles V. Hamilton is one that I always find striking. Divestment is more than a financial tool. It is also abt what we expect from systems.
Photo of text from Black Power:

Black and colored peoples are saying in a clear voice that they intend to determine for themselves the kinds of political, social and economic systems they will live under.
Of necessity, this means that the existing systems of the dominant, oppressive group—the entire spectrum of values, beliefs, traditions and institutions—will have to be challenged and changed. It is not to be expected that this fundamental scrutiny will be led by those who benefit or even have expectations of benefit from the status quo.
