I just feel like they could've done better with a strong direction. If they wanted to go for the doll/puppet look, they could've executed that more clearly. If they wanted hyperrealism, they could've made the characters less uncanny. This just looks so generic and odd.

Again, this is something that actual stop motion puppetry does so well. Look at any frame from Coraline or Paranorman, you can see the textures of the fabrics and the sculpting of the hair, but it's never overwhelming. There is contrast and clarity with the environment. This remake looks so busy.

The art direction just feels so... empty? The environments (except for major set pieces) feel so prefab. The lighting and materials feel like they can't decide between realism and Pixar-esque. The absurd level of detail on everything feels so noisy and unnecessary.

& I can see what some people like in this, there is a lot that's technically impressive. I'm a little surprised by folks that feel the characters convincingly pull off the "puppet" look, because they really don't- go watch any Laika film and compare the look and animation. It's nowhere close.
