Today is the anniversary of the signing of the original Constitution in 1787. But that document did not protect the freedom or citizenship of millions of people living in this country. It took a Civil War, Reconstruction and the 14th Amendment to begin to correct that. That work is still unfinished.

As a condition for rejoining the Union, the State of Virginia (& other Confederate states) agreed to the terms of “Readmission Acts” - including no disenfranchisement for those convicted of felonies except for crimes that were felonies at common law in 1870. Not drug crimes. Carjacking, etc.

Think Reconstruction is ancient history? This year a federal court ruled that the state of Virginia has been in violation of the 1870 Readmission Act, the terms of which governed the state’s readmission to the Union. The ruling will restore voting rights to thousands of felons. wapo.st/4yedhsq

Virginia was ordered to stop barring many felons from voting. The issue persists.

A judge said the state defied his order. Officials say they have restored voting rights for many and are pushing to pass a constitutional amendment on November’s ballot to fix the issue.
