There is a massive common thread linking all the seasons: the GAME, understood in a broad sense. Card games, chess, betting, magic, and the resulting tricks and deceptions. In the first season, God declares that She does not play dice with the universe but rather an ineffable game akin to blind poker. In short, She doesn't leave things to chance;
She knows the rules of the game pertectly, but She is the only one who knows them. Magic is Azi's favorite game; one of his tricks got them both out of a tight spot in 1941, and let's not forget that he fooled Nefertiti with a game similar to Three-Card Monte. The switch trick saved Azi and Crowley from being destroyed by hellfire and holy water. And through a ruse, they saved Job's children. In Season 3, all the characters are united by the Three-Card Monte game, specifically "Find the Lady",
", which we may have underestimated until now. Crowley mentions it himself, as do Brian Cameron, Jesus, and Harry the Fish. This shows us that their role wasn't pointless at all; on the contrary, they serve a very specific function in the story. Almost every time they are on screen, the refrain is "Find the Lady." Their dialogue makes it clear that if you find the Lady, you win, even though everyone looks in the wrong place, the game is rigged (as Crowley says), and the Lady refuses to be found (as Harry says). If you play by the rules and beat her fairly, you get the prize, just like when Azi beats Brian and wins back the Bentley. It is also important to note that, for Jesus, finding the Lady means finding his purpose; ultimately, he believes it leads people to find peace, love and happiness.
None of this talk is accidental. In the final encounter with God and Satan, Crowley realized that the only thing that could save them was finding the Lady and finally speaking to God. The Dirty Donkey: And yet they've been preparing us for years!! But we, gripped by the initial anguish, didn't understand it. For all these past months, we've done nothing but analyze every single frame Prime posted, making up a thousand theories about the clues the social media manager left like breadcrumbs. Even Rachel and the Peter Anderson studio joined in the game of scattering clues and puzzles in their comments, and we had a blast trying to solve them. Then they tell us loud and clear on screen, and we don't understand it!! In recent days, some of you have raised doubts about the usefulness of the crossword scene! But the answer is the CROSSWORD! They want to tell us that the ending is like a crossword puzzle, that we have to look beyond the surface, look for all the clues, and solve the puzzle. The Aziraphale crossword isn't just a simple word game to guess based on given definitions; it's a true game of logic where you can only reach the solution through reasoning. Michael himself used the word "crossword" in the SFX interview as one of five terms to describe the ending. The 90 minutes couldn't explain everything, but they know we have all the tools to understand what they couldn't show us; it's up to us to go beyond it and search for all the hidden meanings.
