There are some interesting implications there, considering that the connection is done somewhat subtly. Maybe. I could just be overthinking too heavily. I do think they have similarities in some ways and are complete opposites in others.

Fun FF3/Dissidia Fact: Onion Knight's "Ingus" costume is called "Deformation-Style" in the Japanese version. Unlike the Luneth costume (which is named "Luneth-Style" there too), Onion Knight's facial features do not change to match Ingus'. #FF3 #Dissidia
Renders of Onion Knight's Ingus (ENG)/Deformation-Style (JP) outfit. Notice Ingus' Gambeson is visible in the Sage outfit. While Onion Knight's swords are blocking it from view, the Ninja outfit also has Ingus' pendant, which is used as his personal sigil in some job outfits. Notice that Onion Knight retains his green eye color and dark blonde hair.A render of Onion Knight's "Luneth-Style" outfit from Dissidia 012. Despit ethe name, it is more akin to a fusion between Luneth and the nameless Warrior, using the latter's color scheme and outfit. You ever think about how Opera Omnia didn't have Luneth's party and get kinda sad?

You ever think about how in the Final Fantasy III remake, Xande irrevocably changed the lives of the main characters forever and they, by getting involved with Doga and Unei and eventually killing him, are intertwined with him. And how Square-Enix has done nothing with that?

I don't think the devs' responses to esports in interviews would essentially boil down to "we don't know what that would look like, but we'll look into it for the community".

NT wasn't focused on esports: I'd argue NT is the way it is because it was an Arcade game, with the 3v3 angle being part of the "FF All Stars" theme (and because it's new). I'm not sure if the game even had a spectator mode and considering Team Ninja headed up DoA (which had an esports presence)-

I thank FFRK for being brave enough to not only have Onion Knight and the DS characters interact, but to have a Captain Planet/Chaos set up where they empower him (or he empowers them; read: Ingus). Dissidia could NEVER.
A screencap of Final Fantasy Record Keeper, specifically part of Onion Knight's D Soul Break. In the animation, Onion Knight merges with the crystals' essence from (clockwise from the upper left) Luneth, Arc, Refia and Ingus. In the attack animation, the aforementioned four appear as afterimages when Onion Knight attacks the enemy.

I think it just gets overshadowed by V. Most of the time, people will tell you to skip III because V does what it did better. The remake isn't bad, but it is hard and one of those games where you need to understand how it works. I'm replaying it now and the bosses are the only-

As do I. There are some character quirks or dynamics that are briefly alluded to in the final game (like Luneth and Refia beefing with each other throughout the game) but they range from "brought up once" to "barely brought up at all".

and some even hint at changed sequences, like Luneth being seperated from the others in Castle Hein. Part of it was also due to them remaking the game in 3D, which allowed them to do more with the scenes. Tanaka talks about it here: shmuplations.com/ff3ds/

Part of it was that Hiromichi Tanaka felt that FFIII stood out after FFIV standardized protagonists with identities (it was considered for OG III, but dropped in response to II). They were planning to go the whole nine yards: there is a lot of unused text - roughly one scene per area (cont)

They did actually intend to give them more scenes with their personalities, but then got worried about straying too far from the original. The text for the scrapped scenes still exists (albeit in Japanese). It's on TCRF.

In November 2023, Super Mario RPG artist Jiro Mifune shared early concepts where the party was themed after The Three Musketeers. The posts were soon deleted, but were preserved by Super Mario RPG expert pidgezero_one. The photos are taken at oblique angles and have very low contrast. I have enhanced them to the best of my ability. Translations of the original text accompanying the concept art are provided.

Reminder that Onion Knight in Dissidia is not Luneth. Onion's second costume gives him Luneth's face, but the rest of the costume is from the warrior on the cover/logo (who inspired Luneth's appearance/hair). Further, in Japan, the costume is called "ルーネススタイ" or "Luneth-Style".
Luneth's 3D render from Final Fantasy III for the Nintendo DS.Onion Knight's alternate outfit in Dissidia Final Fantasy for the PSP, dubbed "Luneth" (English) or ルーネススタイ (JP). While the outfit does give Onion Knight Luneth's facial features, the rest of the outfit is based on the figure who appears in Amano's artwork for the Famicom version of Final Fantasy III and outside of being from the same inspiration, has no connection to Luneth. One of several art pieces for the original Final Fantasy III, featuring an unnamed figure who appears in all of Amano's artwork for the game, including the boxart. This figure would inspire the design for Luneth, one of the protagonists of the 3D remake, particularly his ponytail and white hair. The Onion Knight featured in Dissidia Final Fantasy would also take inspiration from the design, such as the swords he wields, the beads in his hair, the outfit, etc. Luneth's connection would be acknowledged in Onion Knight's original alt in Dissidia (which bases Onion Knight's outfit on the figure, but gives him Luneth's eyes and hairstyle) while Duodecim would introduce a second alt more closely based on the figure (albeit with black clothes due to being based on a different image). This outfit would go on to recur for Onion Knight in later appearances.

It's based on the soldiers' outfits from the FF3 manga, although they're close enough to the Famicom version's designs that we took cues from those.

It's still possible to do with 3, but things are different. The characters have dialogue. They're orphans from the village of Ur. The ending kinda does something similar to 1, but it's of a "lesson to remember" sort of thing?
010
ThatGuy62 @thatguy62.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
I feel like FF1 executed that idea better compared to 3 - the four warriors arrived out of nowhere, they had no dialogue or explicit tie to the world and even the ending flat out says that you were the Warrior who broke the time loop. It leans into that idea.
