Fun FF3/Dissidia Fact: Onion Knight's "Ingus" costume is called "Deformation-Style" in the Japanese version. Unlike the Luneth costume (which is named "Luneth-Style" there too), Onion Knight's facial features do not change to match Ingus'. #FF3 #Dissidia

Renders of Onion Knight's Ingus (ENG)/Deformation-Style (JP) outfit. Notice Ingus' Gambeson is visible in the Sage outfit. While Onion Knight's swords are blocking it from view, the Ninja outfit also has Ingus' pendant, which is used as his personal sigil in some job outfits. Notice that Onion Knight retains his green eye color and dark blonde hair.

A render of Onion Knight's "Luneth-Style" outfit from Dissidia 012. Despit ethe name, it is more akin to a fusion between Luneth and the nameless Warrior, using the latter's color scheme and outfit. Notice that Onion Knight's face is tweaked to resemble Luneth's, using his hairstyle and eye color.

A render of Ingus from Final Fantasy III (2006) in his Freelancer outfit. Notice his hair and eye colors compared to Onion Knight.

You ever think about how in the Final Fantasy III remake, Xande irrevocably changed the lives of the main characters forever and they, by getting involved with Doga and Unei and eventually killing him, are intertwined with him. And how Square-Enix has done nothing with that?

In 2023, concept art was revealed by Super Mario RPG artist Jiro Mifune where the party was inspired by The Three Musketeers, and included Wario. The posts were soon deleted, but I have restored the images to the best of my ability.

In November 2023, Super Mario RPG artist Jiro Mifune shared early concepts where the party was themed after The Three Musketeers. The posts were soon deleted, but were preserved by Super Mario RPG expert pidgezero_one. The photos are taken at oblique angles and have very low contrast. I have enhanced them to the best of my ability. Translations of the original text accompanying the concept art are provided.
MARIO
The Captain of the Royal Guard of the Mushroom Kingdom. A swordsman with a long and distinguished career.
LUIGI
Deputy Commander of the Royal Guard of the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario's younger brother.
QUEEN PEACH

KINOPI
the name is just Kinopio (Japanese for Toad)
A rookie soldier in the Royal Guard of the Mushroom Kingdom. The older brother of the kidnapped Toads.
WARIO
A soldier in the Royal Guard. He was once a leader of a band of thieves, but had a change of heart.
KING KOOPA
King of the Turtle Kingdom and their No. 1 knight. Captured by the Slug Kingdom, but joins Mario later.

Today on the "Onion Knight and Luneth are not the same character" agenda: #FF3 #FinalFantasy #FinalFantasyIII

A screencap of the Dissidia Database webpage, which includes a transcript of an in-game text conversation between Zidane, Onion Knight, Rinoa and Iroha (not-pictured). In this conversation, Zidane and Rinoa ask Onion Knight what he's called at school only for him to reveal that he still goes by Onion Knight.

A screenshot from the 3D version of Final Fantasy III, during a scene in which Princess Sara introduces herself to Refia and Luneth. Luneth, in-turn, casually gives Sara his name, with Refia annoyed at his lack of tact when speaking to royalty.

Reminder that Onion Knight in Dissidia is not Luneth. Onion's second costume gives him Luneth's face, but the rest of the costume is from the warrior on the cover/logo (who inspired Luneth's appearance/hair). Further, in Japan, the costume is called "ルーネススタイ" or "Luneth-Style".

Luneth's 3D render from Final Fantasy III for the Nintendo DS.

Onion Knight's alternate outfit in Dissidia Final Fantasy for the PSP, dubbed "Luneth" (English) or ルーネススタイ (JP). While the outfit does give Onion Knight Luneth's facial features, the rest of the outfit is based on the figure who appears in Amano's artwork for the Famicom version of Final Fantasy III and outside of being from the same inspiration, has no connection to Luneth.

One of several art pieces for the original Final Fantasy III, featuring an unnamed figure who appears in all of Amano's artwork for the game, including the boxart. This figure would inspire the design for Luneth, one of the protagonists of the 3D remake, particularly his ponytail and white hair. The Onion Knight featured in Dissidia Final Fantasy would also take inspiration from the design, such as the swords he wields, the beads in his hair, the outfit, etc. Luneth's connection would be acknowledged in Onion Knight's original alt in Dissidia (which bases Onion Knight's outfit on the figure, but gives him Luneth's eyes and hairstyle) while Duodecim would introduce a second alt more closely based on the figure (albeit with black clothes due to being based on a different image). This outfit would go on to recur for Onion Knight in later appearances.

I was excited for the cameo characters in Final Fantasy Resonance until I realized that there is a non-zero chance that each game is represented by one character and FF3 just has Onion Knight again. I'd be happy to be wrong, but after OO, I refuse to give an inch anymore.

The boss(es) posing as a team is a sign that SH!T JUST GOT REAL. New AU-related commission done by Ingrid/OneGnix on VGen. They do great work, would definitely recommend checking them out.

A boss splash screen depicting (clones of) the Onion Knight (left) and Ingus (right) from Final Fantasy III. The Onion Knight has gold elements and an outfit based on his alternate costume from Dissidia (itself based on artwork from Final Fantasy III). He holds a gleaming sword. Above him is the core of Solaris from Sonic 06. On the other side, Ingus (identified as Freyr) wears a darkness-themed armored version of his default Freelancer outfit He wields a much larger dark sword. Orbiting him are 5 of the six Chaos Rings from Knuckles' Chaotix: The sixth ring is around his wrist. On his chest is a symbol depicting a cracked Jamba Heart from Kirby Star Allies.

An image of Alex Kidd and Stella in front of a stary background with a constellation behind them, taking cues from Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars. Alex is using shellcore (a martial art that enlargens his fist) while Stella is using a star power. Alex's design is based on his design from Alex Kidd & The Enchanted Castle. Beneath the image, a rendition of the Aries constellation sign can be seen.

I was going to upload a commission I recently got from @held24.bsky.social , but I think I somehow didn't upload the previous thing I ordered from them? So, here's Ingus in a snazzy Sasune soldier outfit.

An image of Ingus from Final Fantasy III wielding the Wightslayer from the same game and wearing the outfit the soldiers of Castle Sasune are depicted wearing in the "Legend of the Eternal Wind - Final Fantasy III" manga. In the background a sun-like sigil appears, based on the ones seen on the carpets in the game (made more prominent in the 3D remake). This picture was drawn by Held24.bsky.social via VGEN.
