It’s a tough one given the corruption, massive debt due to Covid, lack of interest from federal labor, and that right wing parties will undoubtedly be worse - lots of job loss, more pumping property, more privatisation, more cruelty…. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10...

"Money's greatest luxury is agency. It allows a person to leave, repair, replace, refuse, seek another opinion and respond to their own life." – Rebecca reflects on Anti-Poverty Week for @powertopersuade.bsky.social FULL ARTICLE: www.powertopersuade.org.au/blog/anthony...
I do not want government to give me a beautiful life. Parts of my life are already beautiful. I want enough money to participate in the life I already have.

More than anything, I want the return of choice. Most people exercise it dozens of times a day without noticing. When it disappears, you notice its absence everywhere. You make do. You wait. You wear it again. You stay where you are. You receive what is offered and say thank you because you are thankful. But gratitude is not agency, and survival is not living.

I am not asking Anthony Albanese to remember poverty sentimentally. I am asking him to remember it politically. Look at the people living on the payments and in the housing that once made his future possible. Look at our shoes. Look at our teeth. Look at the food we eat when nobody is watching.

Good government changed Anthony Albanese's life. I believe him. The question is whether people like us are still considered worth enough good government to change ours.

A lot of rich guys want you to think that the bar on the right is always going to be bigger than the bar on the left.
Vertical bar chart titled "Norwegian wealth tax revenue, change from 2021 to 2024," in billions of Norwegian kroner (BNOK), nominal. Subtitle: top rate 0.85% to 1.1% and stock valuation discount cut from 2022.

Two bars. "Growth with no emigration": 13.71 BNOK, a tall bar. "Lost to reform-driven emigration": 0.65 BNOK, a barely visible stub, about one-twenty-first the height.

Notes: Growth includes the rate and valuation changes and wealth growth. Net of tax that emigrants still paid, the reform-driven loss is 0.49 BNOK.

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

Is it snarky of me to ask why isn’t a diagnosis of PTSD by an accredited mental health social worker one week after an accident is not acceptable given that is this govts preferred MH service delivery model? Maybe they’d prefer a nurse? Or self- directed assessment? Or even AI?

History is written by the victors. Thatcher broke the power of trade unions by mass unemployment, industrial restructuring, frittered away N Sea Oil, laid the foundations for the current housing crisis, decimated local bus services, hollowed out local government and introduced the poll tax.
Simon Clarke

Andy Burnham seems to remember a different 1970s to the rest of us. Britain in 1979 was utterly broken - ravaged by unaccountable trade union power, economically stagnant, the sick man of Europe.
The 1980s saw a remarkable national recovery based on free enterprise, the rule of law and championing Western values. And it is this that our Prime Minister rails against...
