Highly enjoyable and interesting, even thought-provoking presentation on UPF. As a big fan of TVP I always wonder why it is so underappreciated, and that's not even mentioning Plumpy'Nut, a product so "terrible" that it saves lives and brings children back from the brink.

It is often claimed that healthful food is unaffordable. I plead guilty to having believed this. However, ↓ this proves it is not true. Last year, 2025, I produced between 2.0 kg and 2.5 kg of vegetables a day in my small bachelor suite through sprouting, for a cost of less than 1 CDN per day.

And here↓ is my own favourite UPF. It *helps* me maintain my weight loss.

Grains and beans are extremely versatile and I can't remember ever having encountered a grain or bean dish I didn't like, but as far as I can tell, frumenty remains my favourite and this↓ one, frumenty of hulled barley and moth beans is right there on my list of absolute favourites.

In 2025, I lived mainly on sprouts, producing between 1.3 and 2.5 kg a day. I then needed the space because I added a walking pad to my life, but I am currently producing around 150 g day with mere seconds of investment. I harvest them when the sprouts push the top tray up and destabilise it.

That is one really great possibility. There is also black bean bread, my own favourite, but just about the exact same thing. Although these days, I just dump the beans in the rice cooker and eat when it sings its little song to call me to the table→lazy...

Speaking only for myself, I have never noticed any effect on blood pressure. I do not drink the juice, however, I merely eat the beets. They are one of my favourite foods.

Great article. As someone who is interested in weight loss/maintenance, I do have doubts regarding this👇. While my experience with buckwheat is limited, I can't help but wonder how this is possible. It is inconsistent with my experience. I love all grain(like seed)s, but see them as less desirable

Here is something to contemplate for all those smart MAHA people who know so much better than scientists that vaccines cause autism. Stay away from organic foods. They cause autism. Look! Forget vaccines, they are nothing! www.ithinkwell.org/autism-corre...

Une fois n'est pas coutume: it had disappeared from the shelves of Kai Wei in Toronto for far too long, in my opinion. My number one favourite junk "food": hard durian candy. Not only is it deliciously unhealthful, it is also vegan. A win on all fronts!

Here is something I remember from my younger years: Treets. I loved them. And then, they were transformed into m&m's. I never buy these. There was something irresistible in Treets and revolting in m&m's. It *could* be that the colours look inappropriate to me, but I don't know.

Here is something that really pains me. Dry-roasted chickpeas are a wonderful food and snack, but this is what happens when the label designers or their employers don't care about providing accurate information to their customers: fibre = 0? What chickpea species would that be?

I am less than impressed with ChatGPT's accuracy, but I have to give it good marks in the humour department. It seems to be able to cater to my own sense of humour:

Here is another magnificent result from Google's AI. 35 g contains approximately 4 g of fibre and 100 g contains approximately 1.5 g of fibre. How fantastic. I admit that my limited brain is unable to grasp such an exquisite calculation. Artificial idiocy at its finest!

It seems that @vanranstmarc.bsky.social has blocked me on Twitter. I do not know why, because I thought I agreed with most of his positions, but it is his right. So, I will no longer risk bothering him and will unfollow him here as well.

When time is short, this is a lifesaver: sprouts/microgreens taken from a drawer next to my desk with TVP, psyllium-spice mix and water. The salt mill does not contain salt but citric acid.

Here👇is the little blurb about "Food Intelligence", the remarkably enjoyable and intelligent book on food written by @kevinh-phd.bsky.social and @juliabelluz.bsky.social I wrote on Google. I think it deserves many more and better reviews.

It's a great book. I finished listening to it and it was a pleasure. Wholly recommended to anyone interested in food and nutrition. It is so refreshing to have a book on food that is both based on reality and not filled with useless recipes. The narrator, Barrie Kreinik, also did a lovely job.

Since Julia is talking about Paris, I can't help but remember one of the movies I saw when I was 14/15 years old and that is still one of my favourites: "L'aile ou la cuisse" with Louis de Funès and Coluche, where they talk about the US as "le pays de la malbouffe" (the country of bad food):

Here is my current number one favourite meal. I have to be careful with it, because it is prone to massive overeating: Sprouts/microgreens, crushed tomatoes and psyllium with nattou. Insanely delicious.

Bart B. Van Bockstaele @thamno.bsky.social · 21/09/2025
attention to whether or not they contain salt. Right now, the weekly average looks like this: That rather different look is the result of overeating nattou (calories), berries and durian (calories). These are trigger foods for me. 2/

I have never understood that, given that sodium and potassium are part of the same "mechanism" (from memory, physiological term may have changed by now). Here👇is my own average daily intake for the past 7 days (20250831-20250906).

Interesting. I just looked. If Cronometer is correct, I get an average daily intake of about 2x the RDA, with no supplementation. How do people manage to get so little? It is even worse for manganese. I am struggling to get intake down.

I just discovered that @kevinh-phd.bsky.social 's new book is available for preorder on Google play and that there is/will be an audio version. Given that my job consists of sitting, I ordered the audiobook. I can listen to it while walking to the grocery store, killing three birds with 1 stone.

As an old bachelor with an erratic schedule, I love beans to death: recipes are not needed, equipment is minimal, dishwashing almost non-existent, time investment is measured in minutes... and yet, they are delicious anyway.

Here is a good lecture on vaccination by Prof. Vincent Racaniello. "Vaccines do not protect against infection. They protect against disease." www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TwI... Your immune system is NOT a force field or a space suit. It is an army.

1/ Here is what AI (so-called artificial intelligence) comes up with when asked to construct a food plan that contains at least 3 kg of food and no more than 1000 kcal. According to my calculator: Weight: 200+100+50+ 200+50+ 200+100+100+ 200+ 200+100+100= 1600 g

I guess my age is showing. Because I am so busy with work, I got frustrated that I have no time to read @HermanPontzer 's Adaptable for now, so I bought the audiobook as well. Now I can walk around in my room a bit while listening. Kill two birds with one stone. Great!

Here is a nice idea for people who have a breadmaker. Add beans/lentils/peas to your dough. It works just great. The beans can be seen in the slice, but the bread is no more dense than it usually is. This is a whole wheat flour loaf with added whole beans/lentils/peas/grains.

Google just told me that @HermanPontzer's new book "Adaptable" is now available. I have a job to deliver in a few hours so I don't have time to start reading just now, but I couldn't help but page a little and I noticed one of my favourite subjects. Looks promising!

Here is another vegetable: winter melon (冬瓜 - tougan), 14 kcal per 100 g. Tastes quite good, but is way below celtuce in the flavour department. It also doesn't seem to be as satisfying. Nonetheless, definitely worth trying. Sadly, also only available in Chinatown for me.
