I can’t imagine any off the record remarks were removed from the audio recording before it was shared—including before it was potentially uploaded into an AI service.

While digging around their website, I found their ethics policy—including a section on AI-generated content. I suspect that’s a part of what happened here. And I’m upset about that too! I did NOT speak to a journalist with the assumption that my interview would be funneled into producing AI slop.

As an update for anyone who isn’t digging through the comments: I found more articles by USA Today journalists I’ve never met. There are THREE that used quotes from my interview recording—including many quotes that were never publicly published anywhere else.

And still, all of it could have been avoided if USA Today respected the experts they interview. They could have been one of the only publications to get it right *from the beginning* by platforming the concerns that sexual violence researchers had as soon as we saw the DA's statement.

After I posted this thread, I got an email from an editor indicating the story had been updated. They removed my quote and added new text about the developments in the case. I don't know if they ever would have done that without pressure, but it's something.

The primary objective of journalism is supposed to be telling the truth. It is a DECISION on the part of USA Today to know that new details have emerged about this case and to refuse to update an old story that is still circulating and still shaming Jane Doe.

I'm not linking the piece because I'd like for as few people to read it as possible. I'm writing about it here because: - I want to be clear about what happened to anyone who saw that article and felt betrayed to see me associated with it. - These are bad decisions that deserve public shame.

Once I found out about it, I contacted the reporter and asked him to retract the piece--or at minimum add an editor's note acknowledging the NYT reporting about how Jane Doe did NOT tell police that she consented to her rape. Thus far, the publication has refused to do so.

Ironically, my original interview with the journalist I spoke with was primarily about how "inconsistencies" can come from gender bias in investigatory processes and then be blamed on survivors. It was the inspiration for this thread--but none of these points made it into any USA Today article:

I'm the token expert voice saying that inconsistencies in victim's narratives are common in an otherwise brutally bad piece of journalism full of tropes about how not to report on sexual assault.

District's Discriminatory Bathroom Polics
Last week, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) filed an amicus brief in the Eleventh Circuit in support of Drew Adams, a transgender man who sued the St. Johns County School Board when he was a student over its use of a discriminatory bathroom policy that prohibits Adams from using the boys' bathroom. LDF's brief, an updated version an amicus brief filed in support of Mr. Adams in February 2019, notes some of the similarities between exclusions of transgender kids and racial segregation and explains the harm and stigma of being physically excluded from communal spaces.

I think that Dolly Parton was, for a lot of people, an ambassador of the "good" values people think of about the South: kindness, hospitality, can-do spirit, sharp and witty and down to earth. I think for a segment of people, too, she was theantithesis of a lot of noxious masculine country stuff.

One of the (many) reasons I think people are so anti-AI is that it’s a gratuitous display of wealth inequality. The average person’s life is difficult, expensive, and getting any kind of loan sucks - unless you’re raising billions of dollars to build an AI data center.

"Debates over World War II became popular at Heritage, with a lot of “rehashing and going through who was the bad guy and who were the good guys,”" Also, sounds like a lot of anti-Semitism at the Heritage Foundation. Maybe Trump's task force on anti-Semitism could look into this!
Hale told me that he was willing to debate policy; what he wasn’t willing to do was “sit here and discuss whether the Holocaust happened or not.” Discussions among new hires frequently echoed arguments promoted by Fuentes, Carlson and the podcaster Candace Owens that shed doubt on the historical consensus around the Holocaust or the origin of the state of Israel. Hale described a conversation with one new hire who claimed that the publishing tycoon Robert Maxwell — the father of Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein’s longtime partner and enabler, and a Czechoslovakian Jew by birth — had paid for the rights to all the history textbooks used in public schools in the United States, and that everything in them about the Holocaust was a lie.

Heritage purged internal policy experts because expertise is inconsistent with Trumpism in many policy areas, and they were desperate to curry favor with Trump.
According to multiple former staff members, Heritage leadership had, for some time, been less and less interested in the opinions of experts. Those with extensive experience in law, economics, trade, foreign policy — the so-called establishment — were increasingly sidelined. But in the early weeks of the new administration, as Heritage tried to ingratiate itself with Trump, an intensely pressurized climate took hold. Any longtime employee who wasn’t thoroughly on board with the new mission became persona non grata. “They were so concerned with getting the clout back with the administration,” the former policy staff member said. “It just exacerbated the tension between the policy people, who were like, Look, I know Trump wants to do this, but we’ve always believed, like, tariffs are bad.”

Maybe MAGA is not suited for governance? The Heritage Foundation saw internal purges, staffers using Signal to figure out what was going on, and spokespersons who attack the media than respond to questions. So, just like how Trump is running our government. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/28/m...
What looked from the outside like an exodus of Heritage staff in response to the Carlson controversy is, in fact, only a small portion of the 293 people who have left Heritage since 2021. By the time of the video incident, multiple former staff members told me, there was a pervasive atmosphere of insecurity and disillusionment. Employees were being fired or resigning without any announcement or explanation. “People would just get disappeared,” one former Heritage policy staff member, who spoke on the condition of anonymity out of fear of professional repercussions, told me. “There would be a weekend where you’d come in and be like, Wait, I’m sorry, how many people are no longer here?” Staff members called it the “Heritage Hunger Games.” As leaks to the media intensified, and as more people sought positions elsewhere, a paranoia settled in. Some employees, believing that their work computers were being monitored, took to communicating with each other over Signal and on burner phones. (Asked about this and other specific allegations by former employees, Andy Olivastro, the chief advancement officer at Heritage, wrote in an email, “Their self-serving, bitter and vindictive attempt to disparage Heritage from the outside demonstrates perfectly why they are no longer on the inside.”)
