Thanks Euan, looking forward to listening after work. I'm sure you did amazing! And am right there with you hoping I did her justice too, while never having written an obituary before 🙈

Jane Goodall showed the world there is an important place for emotion, empathy & advocacy in science. Her unconventional approach revolutionized our understanding of the other beings we share Earth with. Here's my tribute. Vale Jane Goodall 💔 Thank you for all you gave humanity! 🧪🌏 #NatureWriting

Yep, that's spot on. It's not a lack of access to information, it's tribal loyalty, which has become even more of a factor the more polarized our societies have become.

When politicians at all levels of Govt refuse to address the needs of their constituents - housing, health, education, economic concerns - it leads to people being vulnerable to those who will exploit them for their own interests & agendas That's we we're seeing today #auspol

Woah!! What an utterly incredible perspective of coral 😍 🧪🦑🌿 Looks like alien art, but it's a very real and intimate view of Cauliflower soft coral (Dendronephthya) looking up from its base towards its fractal tips. Australian Geographic 2025 photo competition Winner 🎉 📷 Ross Gudgeon
Thick, pale pink trunks textured with short, darker pink wriggly lines, branching into fractals towards the middle of the image, leafed with spiky white polyps at their tips.

The Western world needs therapy. It does not know itself. Routinely "appalled" and "concerned" about the war crimes it arms, pays for, and covers up politically. It asks us to sever ourselves from reality in order to cope. On an individual level, this is unhealthy. On a societal level, it's suicidal

The military-industrial complex’s vast carbon footprint is deliberately hidden from public view, while we get gaslit into using paper straws.

There's a massive flock here in Abbotsford atm, along the river, like 50 or more. Way larger than I've seen in previous years.

If I can sum up what just happened as neatly as possible: a Federal Court judge found the Australian government had ignored climate science when setting emissions targets, appeared to want to find for the applicants, but said his hands were tied by the law of negligence in Australia. /1

Ahh... ok, this is why so much of it sounded contradictory. So the ruling was essentially more about this level of our court system not having the power to set such precedents rather than if its the govs responsibility or not?

tessa @tesskou.bsky.social · 15/07/2025
Not well versed in law, but so much of the ruling seemed extremely contradictory. Like gov ignored the best available science yet decision were science based. The acknowledgment that we do have an impact on climate collectively yet those making the collective decisions are not responsible. UGH.

Some of us need to fight within the system, some of us need to create new systems, some us need to tend the wounded, some of us need to stand in the way of harm, and all of us need to support the ones doing the things that is not, right now, our thing to do. Good thing there are a lot of us.

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.
"WE'VE ARRANGED A society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science technology. And this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later, is going to blow up in our faces. Who is running the science and technology in a democracy if the people don't know anything about it?"
"Science is more than a body of knowledge, it's a way of thinking. A way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we're up for grabs for the next charlatan, political or religious, who comes ambling along."

Absolutely this! Disengaged would most likely go path of least resistance: vote as they have before (high chance that = major parties). Disengaged means apathetically ticking boxes, not actively searching for alternatives/protesting a system they don't feel is working for them with dick picks etc.

Here you can see a trail of detritus she stores on her web, some of it a larder for times of scarcity, but these caches also include plant materials. So researchers suspect the rotting vegetation may lure more prey.
