50 years ago, the Daily Mirror was concerned about the more serious impacts of the 1976 heatwave: such as men being too tired to have sex.
TOO PHEW NIGHTS OF LOVE
Sun puts sex in the shade
THE long hot summer is turning men into luke-warm lovers.
As temperatures, mount, it seems that the blazing pas-sions and red-hot love affairs of the British male have cooled.
Willing
In fact, the sun has put sex in the shade.
And one expert believes that nine months from now there could be far fewer babies than usual....
For he says that while the spirit is willing, the flesh is weak.
The men of Britain are simply too tired to make love as often.
By MIRROR REPORTER
"The heat slows men down," says clinical psychologist Maurice Yaffe, who works at the York Clinic of Guy's Hospital in Lon-don.
"They still feel sexually aroused, but don't feel inclined to initiate any activity because using energy in this weather is uncomfortable."
It will be interesting to see the effect on the birth-rate in nine months' time
All this must be rather frustrat-ing for the women of of Britain. For, Mr. Yaffe says, many feel MORE sexy in a heatwave.
But he claims that, as it is usually the man who starts love-making, the women will find that it's a case of "Not tonight, Josephine."
For those men who are deter mined to end the love drought, Mr. Yaffe has this advice: Get
air-conditioning fitted in the bed-room. and take a cool shower in the bathroom.
And he says: "Most people will be happy to go back to more normal weather."
Meanwhile, some open-air lovers have been told by farmers: Keep the flame in your hearts and out of our crops.
The plea came as weary firemen tackled an increasing number of fires in dry crops, hedges, barns and woodlands in the Midlands.
Courting
A National Farmers' Union official there said: "It's no coincidence that there are many blazes in the early hours in areas where midnight courting couples park thei cars.
"We appeal to these couples to cool it and not throw matches or cigarette ends out of their car windows."

UK government urged to restore Electoral Commission’s independence to protect democracy
Oversight of watchdog could be abused by a future authoritarian government, report warns The independence of the Electoral Commission must be fully restored to protect the UK’s electoral integrity from a future authoritarian government, a new report warns. The Democracy in Danger report by Spotlight on Corruption found the UK government is in breach of eight different international standards on ensuring the independence of electoral bodies by maintaining the government’s oversight of the watchdog. The UK government is in breach of eight different international standards on ensuring the independence of electoral bodies by maintaining the new power in place. All the constitutional oversight bodies that reviewed the ministerial power opposed its introduction – including two parliamentary committees, the UK’s top ethics body, the Committee on Standards in Public Life, and the Electoral Commission’s oversight body, the Speaker’s Committee. The UK has plummeted down international rankings for electoral body autonomy since the power was introduced and now ranks 44th, among countries such as Ghana, Nepal and Croatia. It has fallen out of line with comparable countries such as Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. The power, which was described by the former MI5 director general and chair of the top ethics body, Lord Evans, as “giving a toddler a gun”, could be used by a future government with autocratic tendencies to distort electoral rules in its favour to maintain power. Raising kids in poverty: The UK’s ‘inhumane’ two child limit
Child poverty in the UK is now at record levels, with 4.5 million kids living in poverty. One of the biggest drivers of this is the controversial two limit child policy, which caps universal credit and tax credits to a family’s first two children. With the Labour government’s Child Poverty Strategy due imminently, many charities and campaigners have called for this brutal policy to be scrapped, but what’s life actually like for mums under the limit and will the government listen to growing calls to abolish the austerity-era policy? Journalist and poverty campaigner Terri White speaks to women in her area of greater Manchester to find out.
