Good summary of the keystone cops attempt by far right scam artists to claim Talarico had a mental breakdown. But I wish there was more focus on the person behind this, a groyper street thug from Oregon who is a fan of the Freikorps and whose political ideology lines up 88% with Hitler’s.

In 1919, Germany's defeated soldiers came home only to be stabbed in the back by socialists and communists who wanted to burn the nation down and install a Soviet-style dictatorship.
The Freikorps rose from the disbanded Imperial ranks and smashed that red revolution before it could finish the job.
A century later the same poison is back—now joined by something even more alien.
Far-left radicals still despise their own people and culture, while Islamists answer only to Allah, reject every core of German and Western civilization, refuse to assimilate, and carry out violence in the open name of their religion.
Germany will not be saved by tolerance, dialogue, or more empty promises.
It needs a modern Freikorps-men who put the homeland first and are prepared to stop both the leftist traitors and the Islamist invaders at whatever cost.

I'm hoping this will lead to a massive Streisand Effect for @sethrockman.bsky.social (who wrote Scraping By).
Pehl, the history professor, told me that he did just that, and decided not to use the book Scraping By, about labor in Revolutionary-era Baltimore, because he had been planning on teaching it early in the year, which didn’t allow time for it to be reviewed first. The book differentiates between the experiences of workers based on whether they were enslaved or free, men or women.

The NY Times has repeatedly used the phrase “to heel” in reference to Trump’s crackdown on universities, implicitly clarifying that Trump goal is to establish dominance. And what exactly constitutes this “woke” ideology in higher education?
During the meeting, Mr. Trump repeatedly complained about his administration’s failure to bring Harvard University in particular to heel. The administration has been unable to hammer out a deal with the nation’s oldest and wealthiest university, a central plank of his broader push against “woke” ideology in higher education.

another researcher accuses OpenAI of training on conversations and then claiming a breakthrough
Valerio Capraro @ValerioCapraro
X.com
BREAKING: OpenAl might have stolen another major proot.
In a detailed Mastodon post, which I report in full in the comments, Andreas Thom presents several pieces of evidence suggesting that OpenAl may have trained Astra on conversations in which he and Gábor Kun were working on Gromov's soficity conjecture, one of the ten problems OpenAl later announced Astra had solved.
I know Andreas. We met several times early in our careers. He is an exceptional mathematician, a leading expert on sofic and hyperlinear groups, and one of the most respected scholars in the field. He has spent two decades working on this problem.
If his account is correct, this is not a minor dispute over attribution. It would mean that unpublished human work was absorbed into a model and then presented to the world as a breakthrough by the model itself. And if the allegations raised by Levent Alpöge, Tristan Buckmaster, and now Andreas Thom are all substantiated, we are no longer looking at isolated incidents.
We may be looking at one of the greatest intellectual scandals in the history of science.
Al is not discovering new mathematics.
Al is stealing human discovery.
