A Shore Thing by Joanna Lowell ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Queer M/F romance with a transguy lead, yet a whole big piece of his arc stems from believing he’s lost his "sisterhood" of sapphic artists, & even his identity as a woman artist. I thought this was handled beautifully with nuance and care, just love to see it.

The Sleeping Sisters by Jennifer Givhan ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 One of my best reads this month, a genuinely stellar new release on the horror/thriller scene! It’d be a spoiler to get into the queer rep here, suffice it to say it’s p subtle but confirmed at the end, and I was hooked on this story regardless.

Oh! and I have some sapphic honorable mentions (??) The main list above are books centering a queer woman as the main character. Yay! But here are a couple more that either have more subtle/secondary character rep, or that need several asterisks to explain 'em 😌

Blood on Her Tongue by Johanna van Veen ⭐⭐⭐.75 Similar vibes to Hungerstone, with more: hungry parasites, fraught-but-loyal sibling dynamics, and the looming terror of institutionalization & the way that is weaponized. Key similarities: he had it coming, and good for her. (🧵 12)

My Monster Girlfriend by Smut Peddler ⭐⭐⭐.75 As with most collections, this was a little hit or miss at times, but the ones that hit HIT SO HARD that it’s entirely worth it. Features F/F, F/N, M/F, and polyam relationships too. I'll continue to snatch up new volumes in this series. (🧵 11)

Sunburn by Chloe Michelle Howarth ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sapphic coming-of-age in a rural Irish community w/ all the complicated social & familial dynamics therein. Lucy is a hard character to sit with at times, her choices *hurt*, but I think that tension is what makes this shine. (🧵 10)

Murder Most Actual by Alexis Hall ⭐⭐⭐⭐.25 The mystery is a fun jaunt, but this one earned its flowers with the established relationship romance! Spectacular portrayal of a marriage in trouble and what repair and reconnection looks like. Liza and Hanna had me all in my feels. (🧵 9)

... The other if you’re curious is Fire Sword and Sea by Vanessa Riley, which spans decades of the pirate’s (fictional) life and rise to power, and honestly my fave of the two. Both are brutal but Riley’s just hits different! The longer timeline + messier character development sealed it imo. (🧵 8)

The Ballad of Jacquotte Delahaye by Briony Cameron ⭐⭐⭐⭐.25 Big year for Jacquotte Delahaye! I’ve enjoyed not one but TWO new novels featuring the adventures of the notorious woman pirate and crew. Do check the CW, period-accurate violence and atrocities handled with appropriate gravity. (🧵 7)

Interesting Facts About Space by Emily Austin ⭐⭐⭐⭐.25 It’s perhaps too revealing to say that I related hard to this neurodivergent traumatized narrator 😅 this was genuinely SO funny, and gut-wrenching, and just plain heartfelt. (🧵 6)

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 This one really took me by surprise. I particularly enjoyed the journalist’s POV layered onto the actress’s memories, imo that added just the perfect tension (and gut punch in the end). A compelling read all the way through. (🧵 5)

The Isle in the Silver Sea by Tasha Suri ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 Okay I LOVE a good meta-narrative about the power of representation and storytelling to shape our perception of possibilities, and the whole time it's giving sapphic fated romance with queer chosen family 🥺 this one was pure joy! (🧵 3)

Hungerstone by Kat Dunn ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Now that is how you do a Carmilla retelling. Give me a wife who is TiredTM, a naughty guest who is an absolute menace, and a slow-then-fast feminist crash out for the ages. That Ending! With my whole chest: good for her. (🧵 2)
