After a long wait, the fifth and final season of the magnificent Babylon Berlin was worth every moment. The acting, the settings, the rhythm — once again, extraordinary. Acts of resistance, humanity and love, wrested from fate as the Third Reich looms. U.S. premiere in Jan. 2027.

Nightmare seems almost too mild a word for this. We’re in a state of deep shock, and personally, I’m both heartbroken and white-hot angry. There are so many of us trying to do the right thing, year after year, only to see cold-blooded traitors in key positions selling us out.

To my absolute delight, I found a huge patch of wild blueberries in the forest behind our property today. They stain fingers and tongue deep purple… but they’re DELICIOUS and absolutely BURSTING with all the antioxidants and goodness nature has to offer. 🫐🌲😋💙

“As we mark, this year, the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, it is important to see that its meaning is dynamic. And that meaning, as we understand it, flows less from the men who signed it than from those who heard its words and took ownership of them as a +

Nice! We‘re cooked over here, literally. Two days of new German all-time heat records are behind us, and the next heat dome is projected in ten days, worse than this one.

Thanks, dear friends, we’re coping. Houses here don’t have AC, because nobody needed it until a few years ago, so we have fans going and spend evenings on the deck with cool drinks after dark, watching fireflies, the first we’ve ever seen in this northern region. @jakichantler.bsky.social

It’s so hot in northern Germany, in this second big heat wave of the year, that I’ve just spotted the first two fireflies ever in my garden. I’ve seen them in the south of the country before, but never up here.

I’ve been in Prague a lot on business and have seen it a few times. At the full hour during the day, the skeleton figure representing Death rings a bell, the Apostles appear, and a rooster crows. Slightly unnerving 😉

I was fortunate enough to visit Crete and this museum in 2019, and I remember marveling at this little pottery “handbag.” There’s such a sense of joy and liveliness in Minoan artifacts. I like to imagine they were a happy culture that celebrated beauty and took pleasure in everyday delights.

The US is in thrall to a systematic purge against dissemination of liberal humanitarian ideas and perspectives. We see it in the rightwing co-opting of media - FOX, CBS - in the attack on universities/the humanities - in the sterilization of social media by algorithms - in the death of integrity.

The forgotten Egyptian queen who dared use forbidden 'magic' to make herself pharaoh
Long before Cleopatra and Hatshepsut, Ankhnespepy II amassed unprecedented political and religious power. Here's how.

Exactly, that was my reaction, too. By the end, it really did feel like a legitimate reconstruction of a woman exercising pharaonic authority a millennium before Hatshepsut. Fascinating and unsettling to think how many influential women may have been overlooked or minimized by later historians.

What a cynical interpretive lens layered onto an emotionally charged story. NYT unable to resist turning a simple, human moment into stereotypical psychoanalysis. A suffering animal appeared near us, and people wanted to help, but apparently that’s too straightforward, too human to be the point.

My heart is crushed today, dear J. He didn’t make it. They found him dead in Danish waters, and DNA tests leave no doubt it was him. He had such a fierce will to live, surviving for a month in shallow waters, and I’m grateful so many people came together to give him a chance. It was not to be.
