Thank you @tinekestrik.bsky.social for raising this unprecedented escalation in the Egyptian government’s attacks on press freedom. It’s imperative that the political conditions of Egypt’s MFA be enforced & that EU officials make clear a crackdown on the press will impact the next MFA disbursement.

As the US waived human rights conditions on its military aid, Egypt launched an unprecedented attack on press freedom, jailing a whole newsroom of journalists. They were also likely encouraged by the EU falsely certifying in July that Egypt made "progress" on human rights to disburse €1.5 billion.

Arresting the entire newsroom of journalists at Matsadaash is an alarming escalation in the Egyptian goverment's attacks on press freedom. Egypt already had the distinction of being one of the world's worst jailers of journalists. TIMEP joins the call for the release of these brave reporters.

And that's why he isn't going to use it. It's an empty threat. China buys 80-90% of Iran's oil. He isn't going to force them out of the "dollar system." China can and will retaliate, plus it would accelerate de-dollarization globally as countries need to trade with China. www.ft.com/content/aa7b...

By admitting that fully applying the threat of secondary sanctions for trade with Iran would "blow up the global financial system," Bessent is confessing why we won't apply them. China buys 80-90% of Iran's sanctioned oil exports. Good luck forcing China to "leave the dollar system."

Donors should ensure financing is tied to protecting refugee rights & preventing forced returns to war zones. Donors also need to raise their own resettlement quotas to show a shared commitment to refugee rights. Precarity for refugees will push many to take risks seeking a safe place for asylum

Egypt is receiving €7.4 billion from the EU, partly to help offset cost of hosting a large Sudanese refugee population. While rich countries should absolutely help Egypt & others host refugees, they must ensure their funds don't support governments adding to the insecurity of refugees they host.

I wonder to what extent recent optimism about his odds of victory also depressed turnout among supporters. Primaries always struggle with turnout and if he seemed inevitable as some polls suggested as well as the prediction markets that people follow closely now, it could help explain the narrow win

50,000 migrants were instrumentalized to pressure Spain in Ceuta & many died. Rather than reject this violent & cynical action, EU leaders seek to weaken their union & its members. Once again, weaponizing migrants is likely to be rewarded in Brussels, encouraging this to continue to happen.

Timothy E. Kaldas @tekaldas.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
It seems to be cynical effort to cut down a leader who embraces the strategic autonomy the EU knows they need, rejecting genocide in Gaza & war in Iran. He shows migration is vital to the EU's future. Rather than adopt his example, they try to destroy him & delay confronting their failing approach.

This isn't about fighting irregular migration. Italy, leading the attack on Spain, received more than double the irregular migrants as Spain since 2021. Italy has also had amnesty programs for undocumented migrants, that Spain is now attacked for.

Critics in EU capitals attacking Sanchez know they're wrong. In private, virtually every EU official we speak with admits they need more not less migrants, but, as this FT headline captures, they can't confront political challenge of making the case to voters or benefit electorally from hiding truth

Spain has one of top GDP growth rates in EU. Sanchez fueled growth with stimulus, not austerity. Spain's debt-to GDP-ratio dropped. Growth is best path to debt sustainability. Goldman Sachs notes Spain is the "only nation among the EU’s top 4 expected to lower debt-to-GDP ratio over next 3 years"

Timothy E. Kaldas @tekaldas.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Attacks on Spain by many EU leaders isn't over a nonexistent threat to the EU from Ceuta, but an apparent hatred of Sanchez. They're humiliated by his ethical stance on Gaza & Iran. He has shown the recipe for more growth & more sustainable growth is migration & stimulus, not xenophobia & austerity🧵
