In recent months, Egyptian authorities have conducted widespread arrests on the basis of racial profiling, carried out raids on areas in which refugees reside, and increased deportations. What is it like to be a Sudanese refugee in Egypt today? @halemhenish.bsky.social for @timep.bsky.social. ⤵️

Important piece by @halemhenish.bsky.social. He details challenges faced by Sudanese refugees in Egypt. Egypt has deported back to Sudan, a war zone, refugees registered with UNHCR while creating obstacles that make life in Egypt precarious for many more refugees pushing them consider risky options🧵

📢 Lebanon’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is happening on January 19. Since its last UPR cycle in 2021, failure to address multilayered crises and implement reform policies has led to an increasing number of people unable to access healthcare, education, or adequate housing.

Sisi's term ends in 2030. Whether or not he will be eligible for another term will depend on whether the constitution is amended--which requires a parliamentary vote. In November, Egyptians will vote in the parliament that may be tasked with that. More from @halemhenish.bsky.social ⬇️

Last year, the EU and Egypt entered into an agreement, in part, to "reduce irregular migration." Months later, Egypt's parliament rushed a problematic asylum law that threatens to make Egypt even less of a safe space for asylum seekers. Read Obai Kurd Ali & @halemhenish.bsky.social's analysis ⤵️

Where do they go? A year of siege, denial of rights, and criminalization of solidarity. 1/ Egypt’s response to the Gaza humanitarian disaster includes aiding forcibly displaced Palestinians, providing medical support to the sick and wounded, and facilitating humanitarian aid into Gaza.
