The bitter oranges outside Millennium Manor. I don't know why they're called bitter oranges. "Really sour" is a much better description.

By the time I walked back in to turn the TV off, it was in the rain delay, and I quickly realized that the game wasn't over. It seems strange after the agony of defeat. And then of course history was made. If only I had known...

I'll never forget that night. In the bottom of the ninth, when it was tied, Kipnis hit his almost game winning home run (foul), and I thought it was a homer off the bat. I was the only one still up, and I walked out of the room to sulk.

As a Cubs fan, I've wondered if the rain delay after the disastrous 9th inning in game 7 is when we departed into the alternate hell timeline.

There were a lot more clouds here than it looks like. The ones you can see are just the low ones. I was lucky to catch the moon at all, which peeked out briefly. There was something poetic about the red moon over the bridge, lit up for Dolly Parton over the Tennessee River in Knoxville.

Ontario Lacus is a hydrocarbon lake near the south pole of Saturn’s moon Titan. Measuring 235 kilometers long by 75 kilometers across, Ontario Lacus is slightly smaller than its terrestrial counterpart, Lake Ontario. Lakes on Titan are named after lakes on Earth that are roughly the same size.
RADAR SAR image of Ontario Lacus. Ontario is a dark, footprint-shaped feature in the middle of the frame. Hills surround Ontario Lacus to the north, marked by bright, rough terrain in this SAR image.

The solar eclipse of 2017 was 9 years ago. I was involved in organizing the event at my home institution, where we watched the eclipse. In my lifetime, this will never happen again

It was close enough that the corona could briefly be seen there. This is from a camera that I left in the bushes to remotely take picture. The quality was far worse than I expected.

Today in 1976, 50 years ago, the Viking 1 lander touched down on Chryse Planitia, Mars, and became humanity's first long term outpost on another world (the Venera Venus landers lasted an hour or two, Viking 1 lasted over 6 years).

Watching England-Argentina, not sure what England's coach was thinking. Messi and Argentina are going to score late in the game. Every time. Focusing on defense instead of scoring was not bright. In football, there is something called prevent defense, which doesn't work. This is is soccer's version.

This keeps happening. I'm actually in Alaska right now. It's also happening back home. Other than a flight layover in 2025, I haven't been to Texas in many years. I want to know what is wrong with Bluesky's location system, and why it is that the Texas legislature feels like it can bother people.

First proposal submitted where I am a Co PI. This is quite a challenge. I've been involved in proposals and projects where I am in charge and not in charge. Being in charge but with others is probably my weakest area, but this is a project that isn't going to work another way. Details if selected.

They had given me a list of questions, and half of them were hypotheticals about, "well, but if it was a missile, then what was it..." I knew good and well that they would edit my remarks to make it sound like I was open to the possibility.

I had a similar offer in which I would be defending the idea that Phobos 2 was not destroyed by a missile. I agreed on the condition that they would not edit my responses without my permission and review of the edits. Or at the very least they would release my full answers online. They refused.

Cloudy Mars: Olympus and Tharsis, ESA Mars Express HRSC Massive 220MP image on Flickr ➡️ flic.kr/p/2seL8ss 🔭🧪 Credit: ESA/DLR/FUBerlin/AndreaLuck CC BY 2025-08-02 North is down HR242_0000 ND3+GR3+BL3 Notes: Cool cloud formation over the North Pole and a dust storm-like feature over Olympus Mons!
View of Mars from orbit. Colours are rusty red and pale white from cloud cover and atmospheric haze. Bright white polar ice caps swirl near the top, while thin cloudy streaks drift across the surface. Four large circular volcanoes are arranged in a broad triangle across the planet’s face. The scene feels dry, vast and softly hazy. Notably, a very cool spiral-like cloud formation appears over the North Pole, along with a dust storm-like feature near Olympus Mons.

I say "normal altitude" because Pluto would otherwise fit the category, but its hazes extend so high that it is visually very different.

The Psyche Mars flyby images remind me of Triton. I think it's because Mars and Triton are the only two worlds we've visited with thin, normal altitude atmospheres that are still able to produce clearly visible features such as clouds blowing downwind (even if Triton's may all come from geysers).
