Glad to contribute to this well-balanced and detailed reporting by Task & Purpose. The U.S. operations against so-called “narcoterrorism” present a complex legal and moral dilemma for the troops being ordered to carry them out.

Two recent studies in PNAS show: 1) Fractures (which are not represented in current ice sheet models) can easily double the ice loss of a region 2) The fastest changing outlet in Antarctica, Pine Island Glacier, has lost almost all traction due to fractures ... www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1...

Continuing its voyage into uncharted waters, the latest preliminary Nino 3.4 sea-surface temperature anomaly is now at a record 3.08°C above the 1991-2020 baseline. Models expect the Nino 3.4 anomaly to continue rising into at least mid-November. Then there will be dragons.

You will not find here anything useful for reasoning about AI capabilities. It may provide you with a confused impression that this intelligent guy has done the reasoning for you, and you can believe in his ~claim that reading this will provide you with immunity against hype about AI. ~homeopathy

I guess at most some of them believe that climate change [and catastrophic effects from it] would be irreversible by the end of decade. [Does not seem to me like a good idea to use the previous successfully viral doomerism thread as a template]

I gave a tutorial on geolocation for the @publictechmedialab.bsky.social at the @uwsjmc.bsky.social, working through one real case: a white phosphorus plume in south Lebanon, traced from a single photo to exact coordinates using only free, open source tools: ptml.sjmc.wisc.edu/geolocating-...

Editor’s Pick: Israel called its strikes on Beirut “precise.” @baydoun.nl  and @chrisosieck.bsky.social  reconstructed five of them to test what “precision” actually meant for the civilians living around the targets. f.mtr.cool/mivlcnrmvg

New from @hrw.org and Harvard Law's International Human Rights Clinic: a report on white phosphorus and the loophole in international law that keeps it lawful. It draws on whitephosphorus.info, the archive from my PhD, now at 286 strikes in south Lebanon, October 2023 to May 2026. 🧵

On 2023-10-17 Al-Ahli hospital explosion: Israeli airdropped bombs were approx overflying the hospital, to reach that nearby area with 21+ airstrikes from 5min before to 34 minutes after the hospital explosion. Aircraft trajectory is ~crudely reconstructed based on observed decoy flares it deployed.

There is honestly no appropriate time. Israel must surrender illegally occupied-and-annexed Golan to Syrian control.
