Digital sketch portrait by inkythoughts art of a young, stern woman with olive skin and brown hair that is braided into a dragon braid and leather band wrapped around her forehead. She has several scars on her face on the left side, one of which cuts through her eyebrow. She also spots some freckles on her cheeks and nose.

It's been awhile since I've made any progress on The Harrowman. Felt inspired this morning and got over 200 words down though! #WiP #worldbuilding #grimdarkfantasy
Herra, Ninth of the Acherim Ashan, lost Matron-Sister of Velkravya, Matriarch of the Herrites, first bearer of the Wightwood Crown, who walked into fire and returned veiled in stars, had dirt on her face. Rurika brushes it away with her thumb, gently, as she might tears from a mourner. The shrine’s stone effigy is rough, pitted by centuries of wind and rain.
Pulling a rough cloth from her satchel, Rurika scrubs the bird dropping from Herra’s shoulders but leaves the accumulated lichen. The Lady of Lost Things would appreciate something so humble growing upon her likeness. Her movements are rote, reverent, resigned. She wedges a loose foundation stone back into place, reknots the wind-frayed ribbons tied to the shrine’s posts, tidies weathered tokens—dried wreaths, rusted charms, cracked clay fetishes—and adds a small bundle of smoking sage bound with a scrap of woven thread. Windchimes carved from runed knucklebones clatter in the slight breeze off the fen.
Rurika strikes a flint and places the newly lit tallow votive in a niche next to Herra’s head. She runs her fingers across the near-erased carvings haloing the ancient matron. It’s a prayer she remembers at the edge of thought. After a moment, voice rough from disuse, “Safely keep us this side of the Veil; let not the space between shadows draw us away from the Light of the Arbahad.” An eiderloon’s mournful song drifts through the misty dawn air.
Mazel huffs low in his throat, a warning noise somewhere between a growl and a bleat, raised hackles making his woolen withers bunch up like a tundra camel’s hump.
“If she’s listening, I hope she hears better than the rest of us,” a deep voice, weary and restrained, conjures behind her. “You can call off your wulhund. I’m offering you a job.”

The Daughters’ War by @buehlmeister.bsky.social is absolutely brilliant. Not a page-turner at all, in the best way possible. I dwelt in every page, savored every sentence. Buehlman’s prose is matched only by his biting wit, which is only matched by the biters’ bite. Never will goblins be this vile.

An excerpt from my most recent WiP, Their Tongues Become Iron, a dark fantasy tale of ambition and vengeance set in an Early Medieval world full of monsters and magic. It essentially imagines historically inaccurate King Arthur hiring Little Red Robin Hood and her Mirthless Men to do his dirty work.
She hears the familiar snick of a knife leaving its sheath.
Heavy boots thumping across the floor.
Rough hands grabbing her hair, yanking her to her feet
The knife pressed cold against her throat.
She feels a line of blood trickle down her neck as the blade bites her flesh.
“Stop!” A familiar voice says from the doorway. “I’ll do it.”
“The kin-traitor has a pair after all,” Garbeorht says. “You wanna kill your own sister? Be my guest.”
Leofrith feels her limp body change hands. Light filters through her swollen eyes. Details are scarce. Nose broken, she just barely smells mint and cedarwood. A scent she’d just this morning considered a sign of home. Now merely the stink of betrayal.
“I am so sorry, dear sister,” he whispers in her ear, his voice tight with tears. “I only meant what was best for us. Please, recant your protestations and grovel before the king. He will be reasonable, I know it.”
“Your–” her voice croaks through a broken windpipe. “Your gods… will sort you when you die.”
He sighs. “Then I give you one last gift.” She feels the blood pour as his blade slides across her neck, yet it bites no deeper than skin. Then he says, “Run,” and shoves her over the railing into the ravine known as the Blackmaw. Darkness swallows her mind as the earth swallows her body.

From “Being Human” chapter 2… [Also, I hope the “no AI” thing was about not writing using AI and not about sci-fi stories involving AI 🤣] #amwriting #writingshare
The image features the following text:

“At my present rate of decay, I have less than three months until the ceasing of my life functions. That was the delicate way my situation was described to me. Payment for my years of service, I suppose.”

Michelle put her hand on Alice’s. The feeling of being consoled swept over Alice. It made her angry. She pulled her hand away.

“Please eat and drink. It will make things far more pleasant for you.”

“I don’t need to. I’m not one of you.”

Perhaps Ms. Collins—First names are for friends. Machines don’t have friends.—felt a pang of guilt over her deception as she silently rose from her seat, turned her back on Alice, and walked out of the room.

Maybe that’s why she suggested the surgery to shut down Alice’s pain sensors.

The science team complied. They wanted to make the rest of Alice’s time as comfortable as possible. At least, that was the official reason.

Unofficially, they just wanted to see if they could do it.

The other three stories in that microfiction series.
A story from the blacksmith's daughter:
> "I was walking back to town one evening after visiting my uncle’s farm, about a mile hence, when a man, hooded and cloaked, approached me on the road. It was later than I like to be out, so I was quickly wary. He asked to see what was in my bag—just some provisions from my aunt—I refused then brushed passed him walking swiftly now. I heard his creaky voice whispering behind me and turned, which I sorely wish I hadn't, to find his cloak shed revealing a hideous, half-rotten phantom glowing with eldritch moonlight beneath. In one hand it held a rowan wand, in the other a bloody coin. It floated toward me and, I tell you, I was petrified with fright. The light consumed my vision until I fainted. When I woke, he was gone and my bag left unmolested. All that was missing was my left forefinger."An account from the Eolderman's serving boy:
> "I was cleaning the house’s chamber pots beneath the eave one morning when I noticed something strange tucked into an alcove cut into the longhouse’s wall. It was high up so I had to stand on my stool to reach it. After some straining, I pulled it down. I promptly dropped the object signing all the wards I knew, some twice. For the object was a skull etched with the word ‘Morðere.’ More than an evil omen, I knew. This thing had no place residing in the noble hall of good Eolderman Hathcyn. I later brought it to him but the he dismissed the skull as superstitious nonsense, then made me clean the the hogsty for the bother. He’s never been particularly cruel to me.

Later that night, I was returning to my cot in the longhouse loft when I heard the Eolderman whispering from the gable window. I climbed the creeping ivy to get a better look when I saw him talking with a… well, a ghost. He called the ghost mother and she told him he must rule more harshly. That he’d been too soft on his people. He seemed to mislike her instruction, but conceded anyway. She told him to implement a strict curfew, increase his guard rotations, and hold a weaponstake. I lost my footing then and fell from the roof. Sure the noise would draw their attention, I ran away and hid in a bush until morning.”A tale spun by the local huntsman:
> “I lost the doe near Thyra’s Anvil. It was there that I heard the moaning and chanting. Approaching the clearing, I saw a man in a tattered cloak hunched over the corpse of a warrior lain upon the anvil. I can only assume he died in the recent battle near Wylmsford. Other corpses were piled nearby and a groaning warrior in bloody armor stuck with arrows stood motionless beside it. From its mouth maggots and worms writhed questing into its nostrils. The cloaked figure chanted in the silence, his knife working at the corpse’s chest. At once, he wrenched the ribs apart with a sickening series of cracks. Seemingly satisfied, he lifted a wriggling bag from behind the anvil and held the opening to the splayed ribcage. Dozens of rats crawled out of the bag and burrowed into the corpse’s open chest cavity. The cloaked man bent the ribs back into place and bound them with hempen ropes. He rent a final incantation and the corpse stirred. It slowly lifted itself from the anvil and looked to the cloaked figure who told it to retrieve another corpse. It shambled over to the pile and helped the other corpse-warrior lift a dead body onto the stone slab. The cloaked figure started working at this one’s eyes, a pair of large spider egg-nests lay in wait. I ran faster than I’ve ever run in my life and came straight here.”

Congrats on 2.4k and thanks for another share! This is the best thing to wake up to ❤️ Today I'm sharing some snippets from a fantasy story I'm working on with my wife @tehri.bsky.social. These all revolve around the peculiar relationship between a warlock and his god.
At the edge of a small copse, half-buried in fallen leaves and moss from years of neglect was a roadside shrine, free of any markings associated with any particular deity. Such shrines were common all over the known world – a place for any and all worshippers to honour whichsoever god they answered to. Judging by its condition no one was maintaining it.

Kae reached for his pocket. ”I’d like to pay my respects, if we have a moment.”

”Suit yourself,” Tamrus replied.

To Kae, his kind of worship was a thing best practised in private, and what gifts his patron demanded were ill suited for altars, but it had been a long time since he’d last laid eyes on them in person. For once there was no mischief in the warlock’s eyes. The look on his face was one of subdued longing as he stepped under the shelter of the shrine’s canopy, bowed once with his arms outstretched, and touched two fingers to his lips as he straightened.

He always seemed to have candles upon him, and he did so this time as well. The others watched from afar as he set one upon the altar, conjured a flame out of thin air and lit it. Kae knelt, lips moving fervently.

”Aamunkajo, Morning Star, Dawnbringer.” The candle burned with a bright red flame at his words. ”Your servant comes to you in reverence.”

His voice had taken a softer, mellower edge. He clapped his hands together four times and let his eyes slip shut.“What you do reflects on me,” Kajo replied, voice dropping dangerously. Their rosebud lips bore a very ugly look indeed. “Make enemies for us once more and I’m not only undoing our bond, I will be undoing your flesh on the cellular level so that there won’t be anything left to bury.”

“I make no promises I can’t keep,” he said, shrugging. “What can I do? I tend to annoy people as soon as they see my face.”

The blow came so suddenly that Kae hardly saw his patron move. Searing pain erupted across his face and he staggered backwards, hissing as he brought a hand to his jaw and felt at it gingerly. The slap had been harsh; he could tell it had immediately raised a welt across his cheek.

“Well, that stung,” Kae managed. He tasted a tang of iron on his tongue.

“Start listening to me and wipe that grin off your fucking face, asshole. I warned you. I’ve warned you a million times before.” Kajo clicked their tongue. “How many more times does it have to be before something goes through that skull of yours?”

Kae winked, wiping a trail of blood off the corner of his mouth. “Always at least once more.”

He did not get the chance to cry out before a jolt of energy shot through him like a current of electricity, limbs seizing up involuntarily. Kajo’s mouth moved, forming a single syllable that clutched at his throat and forced all oxygen out of his lungs. He didn’t need to hear it spoken to feel it taking hold of his being, the air reverberating with the sheer force of the command, and it was a command, there was no mistaking it.

It felt the same as it had before; like a shockwave from within.

That had been their pact, the same as any warlock’s pact with his patron-god. A soul for magic, for power that otherwise eluded mortals. Kajo had remade his flesh and bound him, the name they’d gifted him the seal. It was a blessing and a shackle all at once, and the hand pulling the leash was never too far away.Kae trembled all over, fingers clawing at Kajo’s arms. He gasped as they flipped him over, the back of his head resting against their chest. His face contorted as Kajo shoved a hand inside the bleeding hole in his chest. When they pulled out there was a jagged shard that vaguely resembled a piece from a beetle’s carapace, only enormous, held in their gore-covered fingers. Something sickly and greenish was oozing from the piece.

Someone gagged. Kajo tossed the piece aside and planted their hand on the wound. Their eyes glowed with that strange, iridescent fire as the wound closed, and Kae went limp in their arms.

”Motherfucker,” he panted. ”At least warn me first.”

”Don’t talk,” Kajo repeated. They turned to look at Tariya, who was still staring at them as though petrified. ”You, druid. You have something for pain?”

”I… Yes. Yes, I do.” She started rummaging in her satchel at once, instincts finally kicking in. ”How did you do that? I didn’t even feel the magic coming off of you.”

”I remade his flesh when we made our pact, therefore it answers to me. I am able to shape it to my will.”

Kae grimaced. His voice was weak when he whispered, ”gross. Do you have to phrase it like that?”

He fell silent when Kajo fixed him with a stern glare.

Thank you, Inky! Here's an excerpt from my current WIP, a queer polyam romance I haven't named yet. I love Zeke and Lorcan's interactions. (Who am I kidding, I love all my characters' interactions). But with Zeke and Lorcan I get to play with the infatuated apprentice and his exhausted mentor.
“You got it, Zeke.” Returning to lean over the desk without sitting down, Lorcan verified all the doors and wards had locked successfully. He hit the button to summon one of the techs, glancing over his shoulder at Zeke. “You okay if I ask one of your guards to stay behind to wait for our relief?”

“Please.” Zeke shuddered. “The fewer I have following me around, the better. I don’t care what they say. I still feel trapped.”

“Then let’s go. Get some good food down before your curfew.” Lorcan spun, and marched for the door.

He didn’t want to say it out loud, but lately Lorcan was beginning to understand Zeke’s laments about feeling confined. That was his whole reasoning for turning down Zeke’s advances in the first place. Every time he began to wonder if maybe he was exaggerating his fears, Zeke would say something that reminded Lorcan just how broken he’d feel beneath Zeke’s aggressive possessiveness.

But that didn’t stop him from dreaming about it.

HTTYD is not historical. It is a fantasy pastiche of pop-culture pan-ethnic barbarian tropes. The Viking world was larger and more connected to Africa, Asia, and the Middle East than most people realize. A dark skinned Early Medieval Scandinavian girl is not only plausible, but historically likely.

The color purple is historically associated with royalty & power because of several species of predatory sea snails in the family Muricidae. Their mucus made kings look regal. The Phoenicians built a vast trading empire around trade in snail mucus more precious than silver. Let's talk about it.
"Fabrics dyed in the current era from different species of sea snail. The colors in this photograph may not represent them precisely."

It's a museum display on Wikimedia, showing some snail shells and cloth dyed from their mucus.

Just had a 72-hour worldbuilding brainhurricane hyperfixation. Now I have a brand new, fully built grimdark fantasy setting based loosely on Early Medieval Northern Europe. I wouldn’t call it original, and certainly not unique, but I’m having fun with it and my motivation has skyrocketed.
