If you haven't read/listened to James by Percival Everett, do it now. It is a profound, life-altering masterpiece of a book. Reimagining Huck Finn from Jim’s perspective, it is sharp, brilliant, and devastating - one of my top 10 books of all time. 📖✨🛶 #BookSky #PercivalEverett

I feel like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde when I go from reading news originating in the US vs the Middle East, or even Europe. This President is spewing layers of lies so deep he can’t keep his story straight - unchallenged, unhinged lies.

Juneau has nearly broken the all-time record snowfall. The kids celebrated making the 3rd highest snowfall ever by sledding down out 9’+ pile of snow in our front yard. There is a fence and then a ditch, it you can’t even tell.

The word clutch is now used to describe something that is amazing, perfectly timed, or just “cool”. Yet most kids these days will never drive a car using a clutch. They’ll never appreciate the skill required to pull away from a stop on a steep hill, or pop the clutch to start w/a dead battery.

Every time I hear the word Iran, my brain adds the word Contra. I wonder what word my kids will associate with Iran in 40 years.

In pre-marked trading today (Sunday) oil futures are up over 25% to nearly $115/barrel. South Korea had to halt trading because of selloff trigger alarms. Hang on, Monday is going to be rough for a lot of US investors.

Is it me, or is the USPS delivery in Alaska getting slower and less reliable than ever? It’s now taking 2 weeks for my first class bills to be delivered, inside the state. A year ago it took 1 week. www.juneauindependent.com/post/report-...

Report: Alaska has worst on-time package deliveries by USPS this year, but best first-class mail service
Haines newspaper reports package deliveries to town from Lower 48 range from three days for priority shipping to 18 days for ground transport from the Northeast.

A fact I can’t shake this week: Neither of the World Wars held their namesake that until they were years into the conflict. The people living inside those first few years ID’d those conflicts as less than a WW. I feel like I can identify with that perspective in a way I never could before.

Who else remembers when the US invaded Iraq in August of 1990? I also remember that the stock market fell 18% in 8 weeks, and oil prices doubled. We are still in the very early days of economic uncertainty.

My oldest son will be 18 next year. He is terrified about this war and the people making the decisions that could change his life. Tonight we talked through all his options. He learned about conscientious objectors like Muhammad Ali, as well as many other choices he can make. Knowledge is power.

I worry that Trump killing the leaders of Venezuela and Iran will embolden Putin to murder Zelensky. I truly hope Ukraine can survive the battles it may face now that Europe and the US are so focused on the Middle East.

When I was young and idealistic, I used to believe we were the good guys. Patriotism lifted our grandfathers and fathers when they returned from war. Those medals meant something. Now I’m not sure whether our nation has fallen, or my eyes have been opened. Either way - we are not the good guys.

The race is on to see who will respond first. Will it be Murkowsk’s concern about taking military action against Iran without congressional approval, or Sullivan’s support of the maximum pressure policy? Begich will be silent, and no one we’ll take action, but a race is a race, right?

Tax lesson for today: In 2024 our family business chose to spend as little money as possible with Amazon. I reduced money going to Bezos from $9,200 in 2024 to $481 in 2025. My goal this year is to get that to zero. #yourdollaryourvote #downwithamazon #nomorebillionaires

I love when science blows my mind. I’ve never been an ethanol fan, but this statistic really drives the argument to stop subsidizing corn farmers to create a fuel additive that reduces our fuel efficiency and harms many older and small engines.

What an amazing night for the Aurora in Juneau, Alaska. It was some of the best I’ve seen here and my teenage daughter got to see a good show for the first time. She said it was like dancing with spirits, soaring and frolicking across vast distances of sky.

Aurora in Juneau, Alaska, 1/20/26. At 5:15 a.m. I woke up my 13-year-old. We went outside and stood, awestruck as the shapes danced and pulsated above our heads. We marveled at how small and connected we both felt to universe. It was a beautiful way to start the day.

If SNAP is not funded Saturday, the US will likely see an uptick in shoplifting and misdemeanor theft. When food stamps go away, parents will do whatever they can to feed their families. Young people will find and take food. Babies and children will suffer far more than the adults.

I’m barely a Christian, but even I know “In as much as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.” Matthew 25:40 It’s anti-Christian and inhumane to take food away from people, especially while bailing out Argentina. Is the new MAGA now Anti-Christ…oh crap.
