"No breakfast AND go to the vet's? You're joking." Sorry GC, we're not. Mme's spent half the night worrying. Still losing weight despite eating for Wales, up for multi-tooth extraction, plus more bloods, today and his issues make anaesthetic tricky🤞🤞

Enforced meandering round town resulted in more shopping than intended, retail's fruitless searching & ad hoc lunching at Pho. As quietly competent and fresh flavoured as ever. Photos taken after M NotLeafy mixed coriander & lime into his bowl & Mme'd stirred hers, messing up their pretty plating.

Today's thing, went down an AI resource consumption rabbit hole. "20 to 50 queries consume roughly 500mls of freshwater for cooling alone; at global scale, AI-attributable water withdrawal may approach 6.6 billion m³ annually by 2027." That's equivalent to over half the UK's total water usage. Wow
A screen grab of an abstract from "The Hidden Cost of Artificial Intelligence: AI's Resource Consumption" with a section of text highlighted. This reads: "Verified institutional data shows AI data centers consumed approximately 415 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2024, a figure the International Energy Agency projects will reach 945 TWh by 2030. Inference costs compound: billions of daily queries accumulate continuously, and their aggregate energy burden eclipses the one-time training cost for any widely deployed model. Water consumption is similarly underweighted. Twenty to fifty queries consume roughly 500 milliliters of freshwater for cooling alone; at global scale, AI-attributable water withdrawal may approach 6.6 billion cubic meters annually by 2027. Hardware supply chains draw on cobalt, lithium, copper, and rare earth elements under conditions of projected mineral scarcity, and annual AIattributable electronic waste could reach 2.5 million tonnes per year by 2030 without intervention."

Behold Cardiff's best veggie supper after Mme's major surgery: Cheese & onion pasty A veg side was offered but wasn't one of Mme's likes &, as the next bed's tenant put it "any goodness left long ago". Being at the round's end, the kind catering team member said they were small, so gave her a spare.

Vet visit with GC y'day. Drat, he's lost more weight, despite the advised upping food trial (which he was very happy with). So scared his ears wobbled but the vet & nurse's unhurried gentleness & lickable Creamy held to him by Mme got the bloods done with ease. Waiting for results now🤞 #Caturday

Swung by @pettigrewbakes.bsky.social's Breadquarters on the way back from today's vet trip. M NotLeafy forgot to take photos of the buzzing café but he didn't forget to bag a superb mango lassi Danish & pistachio croissant. Wonder if they've vacancies for tasters in their development kitchen?😋😋
A mango lassi Danish pastry sits on a brown speckled blue plate. The bronzed outer pastry is almost round, the topping pale (less yellow than in the pic) with mango gel in the centre. The left hand side has crumb atop. The mango lassi flavour was unmistakable, a touch of cardamom detected.A large filled croissant sits on a brown speckled blue plate. The browned surface shows off the pastry's lamination. To the top, its split spilling a luscious creamy and gooey pistachio filling, with some nuts too.

Ow! Here's NC, sleeping off her latest meal. Embarrassment stung Mme more than hurt when tripping on a pavement & shoving her bag to one side to avoid smashing posh lemonade as she went down - all in front of paramedics on a shout to the building adjacent, "I'm fine" (forced smile & limped off).

Making the most of time to stand and stare, gravitated to the Loire again. Strolled past quinoa fields on the way.

A leafy tree leans in from the left foreground. The pale blue sky and fluffy clouds are reflected in the water.A view of a field of quinoa. In the centre foreground, a tall stalk laden with rust-red seeds. Surrounding it and into the background as far as can be seen, a haze of rust-red amongst green and paler dry foliage.

Decisions made, knew we were going to need a bigger box. Checked opening hours, anticipating one patisserie visit per trip isn't ever enough.
Back from the patisserie. A brightly patterned cardboard box held closed with thin black ribbon tied parcel-style.Inside the brightly coloured cardboard box. The lid is open and pulled out of view, revealing a white interior and eight cakes. From the front left: two Concorde (chocolate mousse meringue, covered in chocolate flakes - some of which escaped to the box in the journey home and were returned), one Tartelette citron vert basilic (round fine pastry case filled with lime basil cream, topped with a lime slice and icing sugar dusting). Row behind: One Guérandais (deep chocolate mousse, a heart of caramel beurre salé, chocolate covered), one 2004 (dark chocolate, croustillant, spices), one Choux cacahuite (choux pastry, peanut butter, peanut cream, chocolate top with caramelised peanuts. Back row: one Guérandais and one Tartelette as before.

Our favourite patisserie. Decision time.
A counter in a French boulangerie patisserie. It's glass-fronted above a low carved wooden frontage. On the deep lower shelf: rows of decorated cakes - some colourful in reds, yellows, violet and pink, others in shades of chocolate. On the narrower shelf above: small quiches, breads, brownies, financiers and similar cakes - including local specialty, Nougat de Tours. On the narrow top shelf: bags of almond biscuits and a basket of small baguettes. Behind the counter, a young white woman looks down as she packs a cake box.

Another stroll, a spot further along the Loire. Sat watching the world go by & a family cycle up. Chatting in French, the woman asked where we're from. Later, her older child came for his bike, paused facing away &, nerve gained, turned quickly to wish us a good trip in English. Thanked him so much💚
A view from a bank of the river Loire looking towards the other side. The sky is pale blue and studded with fluffy clouds. In the foreground, brown dried earth and scant grass. To the right, a bench with a cycle propped up at either end. In front, the blue water is shallow and sandy bars are visible. On the far side, trees in full leaf and pale stone buildings of a village.

What our trips are made for. A serendipitous stroll alongside the enchanting Loire and a river view picnic with bread still warm from the boulangerie, cheese and surprisingly good alcohol-free rosé fizz.
A view of the Loire from a bankside road. The roadway's pale and sandy, white bollards joined with a black chain line the bank for a few metres and the bank, with some green vegetation, leads down to the river. The water's reflecting the blue sky. Trees in full leaf line the distant opposite bank and this one further down the road. A small island in the river can be seen almost centre of the photo.A blue, gold and floral melamine plate with slices of bread and cheese sits on a pale concrete picnic table. To the right, an acrylic glass part filled with rosé fizz. Beyond, a wide dry verge that's browned, rather than green. Again, again. Where else would we head when we're in France? One favourite stallholder was away, so tarte vigneronne wasn't in the haul, but there was plenty on offer despite the dry season.
A view of an outdoor market in Indre et Loire, France. It's a blue skied sunny day, the public square is closed to traffic and stalls have been set up. To the left in front of a leafy tree, fruit and veg stalls with boxes of melons, apricots and nectarines, as advertised on an A frame blackboard. To the right, a stone built covered part of the market. There are trees in the background, including a pencil cypress. The market's beginning to be busy with buyers perusing.A view of the covered market's interior with a long veg stall in the foreground. It's constructed of a series of trestle tables and is laden with (left to right) carrots, potatoes, garlic, radishes, celery, carrots, two kinds of green beans, radishes, white and purple aubergines, red and yellow peppers, courgettes and fennel. In the background also under cover, organic bread and honey stalls. Behind the covered market, stalls selling clothes and people selling baskets.A stall in the outdoor market is covered by a large orange parasol and is laden with punnets of three different types of strawberry and some raspberries. A banner across the front has details of the producer, who is selling there direct. We're waiting patiently in a queue behind two other buyers who are choosing their fruits and have already settled on mara de bois.

Another day, another Brittany big sky, big sea, big brassicas and a big beach with absence of humans (we two aside).

Impossibly beautiful Brittany's big sky, big sea, a big beach and more sea vegetables than we could shake a stick at.
The view as we left the access path and reached the beach area proper. In the foreground, pale sand with a few of Brittany's typically large rocks and wind and salt tolerant wild planting. The pale sand continues towards a blue sea, where it becomes darker and peppered thickly with brown rocks. Two people (the only other humans present) are walking towards us. Behind them, an island with a private house surrounded by trees. Above, the bluest of blue skies.Walking along the beach, we're nearer the island. In the foreground, a stretch of beige sand lies between the sea and a parallel stretch of rocks. Small French town, big market. Lots of lovely veg to be lusted after in Brittany. Started by nabbing those oignons nouveau en botte and a chonk of a fennel.
A view of a market in progress in Brittany. The street has been closed to traffic and stalls set up along it. To the left, Brittany's black and white flag - Gwenn ha du - and stalls selling clothes. People are perusing both. There are stone buildings behind the stalls and at the end of the street.Part of a market stall laden with, from the left, lettuces, rhubarb and bunches of what look like giant spring onions but are listed as oignons nouveau en botte (young onions harvested early and sold bunched). In the background, a seafood place selling oysters and more. The fruit and veg stall's counter. Five staff members in black t-shirts are behind the stall's display and serving customers. In front of them are wicker baskets with produce including shallots. Not been anywhere but indoors, so it's a fridge dec dinner. A sidelined pot of labneh, lurking IoW cherry tomatoes & brown bread crusts standing in for sourdough became @nigelslater.bsky.social's grilled tomatoes & labneh on toast. The Aleppo pepper & sumac asked for a za'atar sprinkle. #foodsky
A serving of grilled cherry tomatoes & labneh on toast sits on a brown speckled and edged blue plate. The classically red-orange tomatoes are in the centre of the labneh, olive oil is drizzled around and za'atar sprinkled atop.

Round ours, earlier. Yes I'm asleep in your cool, cast iron bath. And, no, I'm not getting out so you can use the shower.
A fluffy blue tortie tabby is sleeping in the bath, on her back with paws in the air and tail akimbo. She is resolute in her occupation. The bathroom's shady, as the blinds are drawn.

Just after the result, Mme's Austrian cousins sent her this cartoon from their newspaper.
A cartoon cut from an Austrian newspaper. A small stone built castle with union flags flying sits on an island as small as its footprint. A wooden drawbridge is in the air and disintegrating. Musical notes and the words "For he's a jolly good fellow" are at the top of the castle where light shines through one window. At the bottom of the cartoon are the words "BREXIT: My home is my castle".

Wednesday's weather prediction looks, er, interesting (the Met Office doesn't do Roath, so Tremorfa it is).
A screen grab from today's Met Office site showing the temperature in Tremorfa, Cardiff, on Wednesday is predicted thirty seven degrees centigrade and feeling like thirty nine degrees.

..and, not to be outdone, @sundownerstudio.bsky.social's princely boar has also been framed, aimed for a way that'd allow the lovely paper he's been printed on to shine.
A lino print of a black boar on rather special cream paper sits against a brown background within a white passepartout and a black frame. There are green plants just visible in the background.

The quest to find a frame for @sundownerstudio.bsky.social's handsome Ganesh went on - only to be found under our noses (mango wood, lighter than in the photo).
A gold lino print of Lord Ganesha sits in a mango wood frame. There are green plants in the background.

Sunpuddled floof #Cat #Caturday #CatsofBluesky
Despite the heat, a very fluffy blue tortie tabby is asleep in a sunpuddle. She's in her customary position, flat on her back on the sofa. She has an extremely fluffy peach coloured underbelly and her paws are raised but relaxed. Her head is to one side and eyes closed in repose. The sun shining on her face through patterned glass makes it appear orangey (ditto the admittedly worn grey sofa throw in front of her).

No, DPD, it wasn't "left in safe place". You dumped it on the doorstep in full sun and ran. We know because we were at home, retrieved the parcel and yelled "Thanks a bunch" as you drove away. Oh, and we didn't provide you with any safe place instructions either.
An image of a screengrab from DPD's parcel tracker. The text reads:
Parcel No.
Your parcel is waiting for you at home (left in safe place) at 13.06 on Thu 28 May 2026

She came to see what we were, settled on mostly harmless and ambled off with her lambs in tow.
A Devon Longwool ewe and her two lambs are walking away from the person taking the photograph. They're in a green pasture with wild flowers scattered through the grass. In the distance, green hedgerow and trees. The sky is mid-blue with vague cotton wool clouds.

Crisp, just off-dry and chilled, this went down well over that hot BH weekend; alcohol free but certainly not flavour or pleasure free.
A crown-capped bottle of Wild Coast Cider 0%. The bottle's clear glass, showing a light amber coloured drink.
