I love listening to the conversations in the pet food aisle of the supermarket: “Not that one! She likes the chicken not the beef!” “Was it the jelly or the gravy?” “Gravy! She HATES jelly!” So cute 🤭

There’s this life lesson that takes a long time to learn and is probably also valuable in picking politicians, which is that if someone is a cockwad on your behalf, there‘a a decent chance they’re actually just a cockwad in general.

"do exactly what all the rest of us do who have a five-foot rattlesnake in the freezer" #gourmetmagazine september 1954

marinated rattlesnake recipe from the september 1954 issue of gourmet magazine

"Q. As an old subscriber I am calling for help. What to do with a freshly killed five-foot rattlesnake, now in the freezer.
MR. JAMES G. COYLE
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

A. Why, you do exactly what all the rest of us do who have a five-foot rattlesnake in the freezer!

Marinated Rattlesnake

Remove the head, and skin a rattlesnake. Clean, cut the meat into 2-inch pieces, and marinate the pieces for 3 hours in the juice of sour oranges or in the juice of sweet oranges acidulated with lemon juice, 1 teaspoon peppercorns, and a dash of nutmeg.
Drain the snake meat and wipe the pieces dry. Sprinkle with salt, dip in beaten egg, and roll in fine bread crumbs.
Sauté the rattlesnake in hot butter until the pieces are golden brown."

HOLY SHIT DUDES fucking with the environment is now not just a sin (which Francis also said), it is classed as a direct fuck-you to God and a central tenet of the reasoning is the need to care for "our common home," i.e. you are morally obligated to think about the other people who also live here

If there are ever time travelers from the Regency period they will be so confused by our robot butler discourse. COMIC ◆ www.smbc-comics.com/comic/butling PATREON ◆ www.patreon.com/ZachWeinersm... STORE ◆ smbc-store.myshopify.com

2-panel SMBC comic update. A salesman is negotiating with a client, offering a robot. He says "I’ll sell you this perfect robot butler for a mere $100,000 dollars." The man takes it immediately. The second panels shows the man shortly later, alone with the butler robot. When he commands it to clean his room, the robot says "very good, sir. Please direct me to your maidservants and I shall have things arranged." The man reacts annoyingly, saying "son of a BITCH." The caption below the comic reads "Technically a butler is a chief of staff."

Seen this passed around a lot, but will say my personal experience is people agree with "people should work together across disagreements" in the abstract, but rarely maintain that agreement when the specifics come in. Like "I said we should work through disagreement, but not with OUTGROUPS!"

She happily says "I’m here to tell you the past was EVEN WORSE!" The man disagrees, explaining "but work was better and people had freedom and–" The fairy hugs his face, shushing him "shh. Shh honey. Things were never good."

This is getting passed around and one thing worth noting is the person running the ai appears to have asked it to appeal to the particular biases and predilections of the editors. I continue to think people who never use an LLM are now the most vulnerable.

I would kill or die for Larry

A small operation in Oregon that hunts truffles with a trained dog has added an unpaid trainee. A cat named Larry accompanies the handler and the truffle dog into the woods every outing, works a patch of ground a little apart from them, and digs with tremendous confidence in places where there is nothing.
The handler says Larry has never found a truffle and shows no sign of understanding the assignment. He does not use scent the way the dog does and he does not respond when the dog makes a find.
He simply digs his own holes nearby and then inspects them. "He thinks he's on the team," the handler said. "He is emphatically not on the team."

The specifically scone heavy series is the Beaufort Scales mysteries by Kim M. Watt. They are really well done, as are the two companion series which are police procedural/horror and private detective/horror respectively.
