Wow! @menendez.house.gov says that the EXACT scenario I flagged two months ago, where ICE "releases" someone having a medical emergency solely so their death won't be recorded as occurring while in custody, happened last month at the infamous Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, NJ.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick

@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social
For many years, there were allegations that ICE would “release” critically ill people in hospitals so that their deaths wouldn’t be recorded as in ICE custody. To fix this, in 2021 the Biden admin required ICE to report deaths occurring up to 30 days after release.

Now that rule has been dropped.

The change comes as ICE has faced pressure after the death of 18 detainees so far this year.

This case is horrifying. The man had deferred action, was on a full path to a green card, is a college grad magna cum laude, and ICE arrested him randomly while looking for someone else: “What do we do?” said one ICE officer, to which another replied “We’re going to take him with us anyway.”
On January 3, 2026, petitioner was on his way to work when he noticed an SUV
with blacked-out windows, driving erratically and following him, leading Garcia Lanza
to suspect that he had been targeted for a robbery. DE 12-1 2. In fact, Garcia Lanza
had been targeted. According to Supervisory Detention and Deportation Officer Jason Langlois, "ICE along with Special Agents from Homeland Security Investigations arrested petitioner while conducting a targeted operation on a third party." DE 11-1,
95. In other words, Garcia Lanza was not the individual the officers were looking to arrest.
Nevertheless, he was soon surrounded by four vehicles and swarmed by a group
of immigration agents. Why? According to the Government, "Officers visually observed petitioner and believed him to match the description of the third party." DE
11-1 15. Asked if he had a "green card," Garcia Lanza provided his U.S. Work
Authorization card, which an agent seized from him. DE 12-1 112-3. That card, valid
until November 3, 2026, states that he "is authorized to work in the U.S. for the validityof this card." DE 1-1 at 7. It also demonstrated to the agents that they had seized the
wrong person.
The officers surrounding Garcia Lanza took his picture, examined his USCIS
Work Authorization Card, and then, according to petitioner, "seemed unsure what to
do with me." DE 12-1 14. He heard one officer ask "What do we do?" to which the officer holding his identification responded "We're going to take him with us anyway." Id. He was handcuffed by the officers, patted down, surrendered his property and
placed in a vehicle with another arrestee. Id. 15. Garcia Lanza reports that he was
arrested in an area in which the residents are principally Latino and Black and that the
officers initially tried to communicate with him in Spanish. Id.
He was taken to the Hempstead Armory, where he and another detainee were
shackled. Id. At this point, he observed one of the officers complete an administrative
warrant of arrest for his apprehension, which the officer showed to his stepfather who
arrived at the scene. Id. 6-7. His stepfather snapped a picture of the administrative
warrant, signed by an immigration officer, which states that "the subject either lacks
immigration status or...is removable under U.S. immigration law." DE 1-1 at 2. While the timeline differs slightly, a supervisory ICE officer admits unabashedly that officers
apprehended petitioner without an administrative warrant, executing it only after his
apprehension. DE 11-1 15.

At minute 57 of a 60 min Zoom session, a tutee asked "Why does the anti-derivative of 1/x contain absolute value bars?" Here, in four parts, is the answer I gave, followed by the answer I provided in writing the next day. #iTeachMath 1/4
At the very end of our session last night you asked why the absolute value pops up in the antiderivative of 1 over x. The answer I gave was that it made sense given that f(x) = 1 over x falls in the first and third quadrants, and the area from a to b, by symmetry, must be the same as the area from −a to −b. This is illustrated by graphs of 1 over x and of ln(abs(x)).

If a function is odd, its integral should be as even.

On the right above (in green) is the plot of ln |x| which shows this.

This is only a justification, but not a proof, as I mentioned last night!

Full letter from Laura Wittmann, the Uline employee who resigned rather than be complicit with the Trump regime by working for the Uihleins. Alt-text is below; typos are mind. Document taken from Reddit.
To whom it may concern.

Please accept my formal resignation from Uline.

As America descends rapidly into fascism. I can no longer work to grow the personal fortunes of people who helped to make it so.

I truly believe that the Uihlein3 and others like them are the biggest threat to global peace, equity, and quality of life. With their money and influence, they could sway politicians against the horrors unfolding in their own backyard, but instead, they funnel hundreds of millions of dollars to the people and organizations committing the horrors.

The only quality of life billionaires care about is their own, and they will always vote for their own interests regardless of the consequences to the public. Why end the genocide in Palestine, or any conflict, when it means more money for weapons manufacturers, which means they have more to spend with their suppliers? This is a hypothetical example.

Liz has made her fondness for Ronald Reagan known, and this should tell us everything we need to know about her family's values and principles. He illustrated perfectly how much violence and evil can hide behind policy and bureaucracy.

What is happening now in America and across the territories they invade, is either by the design or the indifference of people like the Uihleins. The system will never change if we continue to work under them and allow their kind to succeed. However small or passive a role we might play, Uline employees are all parts in the American imperialist war machine.
