Well (1) Democrats are in power here, unlike Florida in 2019. (2) The measures, while thematically related, are, very different. Virginia’s goes much further.

Interestingly, the governor used her executive authority this summer to restore the voting rights to thousands of Virginians in line with this measure. They’ll now be able to vote on this, effectively removing this from being about the whims of future governors.

Virginia Governor Restores Voting Rights for Thousands With Past Felony Convictions - Bolts
This is the only state that was banning people convicted of any felony from voting for life. Virginians have an opportunity to end that system for good in November.

Arguably the biggest democracy referendum next month: Virginia is one of only three states where the state constitution says people should lose their right to vote FOR THEIR ENTIRE LIFE if they are convicted of any felony. This measure would allow anyone to vote after prison.

A Missouri ballot measure would ban state legislators from rolling back a voter-approved initiative unless they can muster 80 percent of lawmakers. When Republicans repealed a paid sick leave measure last year, the vote fell well below that threshold.

Near-final results of the first round: Bolsonaro 47.2%, Lula 45%. Four years ago, Lula finished 5% ahead in the first round before winning the runoff by less than 2%. Not just that, but the rest of the field is perceived as more pro-Bolsonaro this time.

Lula won the first round by above 5% last time before winning the runoff by under 2%; him trailing this time is a very bad sign for his runoff chances.

Yes, it almost certainly will. Bolsonaro probably ends up 1-3% ahead at the end of the count.

Brazil is voting today, and while the presidential election is likely to go to a runoff — the results are a clear and significant shift to the right since the 2022 election and set up Flávio Bolsonaro very well to oust Lula in the October 25 runoff.

GOP ads right now are all about attacking trans people. Over, and over, and over. I was a gay teen in 2004 watching the Bush campaign try to win on attacking gay marriage, but the resort to this hate drive in campaign ads feels so dialed up now. I can’t imagine being an lgbt kid watching tv today.
