Institutions need to understand that saying there are free therapy sessions does not absolve them from the responsibility to ensure the safety of staff wellbeing. I said, this person is at risk. Their response? Thanks for letting us know & btw, he can call this number if he needs to.

Went to the launch of Motion Sickness by Michelle Elvy at Scorpio Books in Ōtautahi tonight. Privileged to be asked to read a couple of poems. James Norcliffe launched it. A few other poets spoke as well. So many clever words. The book is beautiful

If you took the $800 million National want to spend on 11km of road and shared it equally between all South Island Councils they'd each get $38 million to spend on roads which would have a wider net positive on roads than 11km of north Christchurch highway.

Aotearoa author Tania Roxborogh wins Génération Mer award for Charlie Tangaroa

Author Tania Roxborogh has won a 2026 Génération Mer literary award for the French edition of her children’s novel Charlie Tangaroa and the Creature from the Sea.

The novel has been named the winner of the Étoiles Bleues – Ados category, an award celebrating books that engage readers aged 13 to 18 with marine life and the ocean.

Originally produced in Aotearoa by Huia Publishers, Charlie Tangaroa and the Creature from the Sea was published in France by Au Vent des Îles and translated into French by Christine Roth.Roxborogh said she was deeply honoured that Charlie’s story had found another home with readers on the other side of the world.

‘It means a great deal to me that a story about a Māori boy from Aotearoa New Zealand has crossed the ocean and been welcomed in France. Stories connect us, and I think our oceans connect us too.

‘In Charlie Tangaroa, the sea isn’t simply the setting for the story. Charlie’s identity and whakapapa are connected to Tangaroa and to the moana. If we understand the ocean as something we are in relationship with, rather than simply something we own and use, that changes how we behave towards it.

‘I’m enormously grateful to Génération Mer for recognising Charlie’s story, to Christian Robert and the team at Au Vent des Îles for bringing the book to French readers, and especially to Christine Roth, whose translation has allowed French children to connect with Charlie and his world.’ Charlie Tangaroa and the Creature from the Sea follows Charlie, a Māori boy who discovers he has an extraordinary connection to the ocean and the creatures within it. The novel draws on pūrākau, whakapapa and mātauranga Māori while asking questions about the relationship between people and the natural world. It combines wild adventure and humour with themes of belonging, identity and care for the environment.

The Génération Mer award adds an international honour to a book that has already received significant recognition in Aotearoa.

Roxborogh said she was ‘delighted’ to share the news.

‘When you write a story that is grounded so firmly in Aotearoa, you don’t necessarily know whether readers thousands of kilometres away will see themselves in it. This award reminds me that the particular can also be universal. Charlie can remain completely himself—a Māori kid from Aotearoa—and still make a connection with a young reader in France.’

Jumped online to a wānaga via Massey Uni re using Ai in research. Lots to think about (FD: I asked Ai to provide ALT text for the images because my brain didn't know how to do it)
A presentation slide titled “AI Quick Check: Before using AI,” showing a three-step decision process. Step 1 – Stop and check: asks whether secure or security-related information, including passwords, credentials or access details, will be entered. If yes, remove it before using AI; if no, continue. Step 2: asks whether the proposed use involves personal information; someone else’s work, including teaching, research or student work; Māori data or mātauranga Māori; an AI tool that could expose information to unauthorised users; AI contributing to a decision affecting a person, group or community; agentic AI capable of taking actions; or AI providing advice without qualified human review. If any apply, complete the organisation’s AI Use Screening Procedure before proceeding; otherwise continue. Step 3 – Choose an approved AI tool: select a tool appropriate to the proposed use and level of data risk, consulting the Approved AI Systems and Information List and seeking advice where necessary. A footer emphasises continuing responsibilities: remain accountable for decisions and work, review AI outputs for accuracy, bias, relevance and completeness, disclose AI use where required, keep appropriate records, and use professional or academic judgement rather than allowing AI to replace it.A presentation slide titled “AI for Research Students: From Red to Green,” with the subtitle “The boundary shifts as you gain experience.” It asks researchers to consider: “Am I saving time on something I can already do, or am I skipping practice I still need?” The slide uses a traffic-light framework. Red – I need to do this myself covers work with high learning value or high risk if outsourced: tasks that build core disciplinary capability, require original judgement, interpretation or argument, cannot yet be independently explained or defended, or where errors could affect rigour, quality or academic integrity. Amber – use with care covers tasks where AI can assist but outputs need checking, the researcher can evaluate quality using sources, methods or expertise, some thinking is involved, and human judgement remains essential. Green – good to leverage covers low-stakes support for tasks the researcher already knows how to do, particularly routine, mechanical or administrative work where outputs are easy to verify and errors are easy to correct. A footer states that researchers remain responsible for verifying outputs and evidence, protecting confidential data, keeping records, declaring AI use, and discussing disciplinary norms with supervisors.
