As We💞are at a loss for words today, what better feast canst We offer thee than lines from #TheBard Himself? As with so many of his works, some phrases from it may be familiar… But here it is, in its beautiful entirety: Sonnet 18 by William #Shakespeare #poetry #ClassicPoets #sonnet #LovePoetry
Sonnet 18

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course untrimm'd:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,
Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st,
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

~ William ShakespeareFree Image (not our photo, ASAWK) of an Orchard in full bloom. Two rows of trees are covered in white blossoms. White and yellow wildflowers cover the ground beneath several trees on the righthand row. And all throughout, the land is lush with green grass as well as the profusion of wildflowers. Above, the sky is azure blue.
We thought this a fitting visual accompaniment to this Sonnet…knowing how many do like to see photographic beauty along with poetic words… Although, to be fair, The Bard’s words do speak well enough for themselves…~💞

#WestminsterAbbey Rose Window, South Transept-One glimpse inside the hallowed #Abbey wh/has witnessed #Royal weddings, funerals & #Coronations Within it are buried Kings, Queens, many notable ppl across centuries of #BritishHistory & there is #PoetsCorner … #Medieval #architecture #photography -amb
The stained-glass Rose Window in the South Transept of Westminster Abbey is 32 feet across, which should give you an idea of scale: just how immense just one part of this site of so many events in British history is. Here are buried monarchs, including Queen Elizabeth I. Within these walls many Kings and Queens have been crowned. It is here where the funerals of Princess Diana and-more recently-Queen Elizabeth II, took place. The Abbey is also where Prince William and Princess Katherine were married. Millenia of historic events have taken place within these towering walls. In this photo, the chandeliers are lamps made of hand-blown Waterford Crystal glass, all donated by the Guinness family. At the very bottom you might spot several Gothic Arches which surround religious wall paintings which date back to the 12th-13th century. If one were to continue forward and turn Left, you would find yourself in Poet’s Corner, where many of the United Kingdom’s most revered poets & authors are memorialised. There are also memorials to many of 🇬🇧s artists, actors, leading figures. Parts of the Abbey are off-limits to the public, including the Lady’s Chapel, where both Queen Elizabeth I & her half-sister Queen Mary are buried. There’s more history here than we can possibly list, let alone take in, to be honest, for this Abbey has witnessed centuries of it. To find out more, seek out Westminster Abbey’s own website. We would’ve given a link in our post but ran out of room, frankly. amb was very fortunate indeed to be able to capture a few photos whilst she was inside, before a special event to which she -among hundreds of others -was invited recently. One is not usually meant to be taking photos inside, but the kindly people who work there did not prevent her from taking a few snaps, at least. This was taken quickly, so apologies for the lack of sharpness & clarity. Quite an awe-inspiring place it is. We wish we could have gone ourselves.~💞

still mourning

Gently I kiss her scars
pressing my lips to where her breasts once were
I tell her she's still beautiful -
and I mean it from my Soul's depths -
but I know she is still mourning...

Softly I lay my head between the lines
just for a moment, to listen to her Heart
still thrumming with Life's rhythm...
my fingers trace the scars I see
but I know they run far deeper, invisible to me
for she is still mourning...

Slowly raising my head, my eyes search hers
and see their glistening...
gently I kiss her tears as they spill over
"Every Tear Is A Waterfall"
one of her favourite songs rings true to her
for I know she is still mourning...

Softly I press my lips to hers
and tell her once again she's beautiful...
the truth is I am in awe of her courage,
her defiance in the face of what could be The Worst...
and wonder if I could ever be as brave as her
even as she is still mourning...

She gazes up at me as if I'm the wounded one...
my heart breaks as gently I pull her close
my own eyes welling, silently grateful she's still with me
and as her weakened arms embrace me
I tell her she's the bravest, most beautiful...and that I love her so
(though she must never hear my fear, nor my voice falter...
...for I know she is still mourning)...

And try as I might I can never know how she's truly feeling...

Gently I kiss her forehead, then feel the waterfall
streaming from my eyes as I lay back,
tenderly holding her closer, wishing I could be stronger for her...
mutely trying to bear her sorrow on my shoulders,
knowing she is still mourning...and we do not have forever...

#ElizabethTower -pt of the Palace of #Westminster this iconic #PerpendicularGothic structure was once known as Clock Tower; renamed in 2012 in honour of Elizabeth II‘s Diamond Jubilee. Within is #BigBen -1 of 5🔔wh/chime w/the clock. #London #photography -amb More here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Ben
Elizabeth Tower and -to the left-part of the many spires at the far end of the Houses of Parliament, all part of The Palace of Westminster.
No, the tower is not leaning like the one is Pisa. This photo-taken by amb- is a bit off-kilter- as it was taken from an awkward vantage point on Westminster Bridge. In the lower righthand corner is a glimpse of a couple of the ornate lanterns that adorn the bridge itself.
Many of us look at this tower and instantly think “It’s Big Ben.”…Well, yes and no. Big Ben is actually the largest of 5 bells within the top of the tower which chime with the clock. Refurbishment of the entire tower, inside and out-which has taken several years-was just completed this year (2026) which is why it looks especially beautiful, clean and bright, particularly against the blue sky. The Wikipedia article-though titled Big Ben-will explain far more about this iconic tower than I can detail here, so please do read more about it there.~💞

amb’s photo of The Palace of Westminster, more commonly known as the Houses Of Parliament, which has stood on this spot beside the River Thames for hundreds of years. Please see the Wikipedia article for better detail and history than I can give here. amb took this photo from Westminster Bridge. Note: This does not show the entirety of the Palace, which includes the tower which houses the iconic Big Ben.* We will be posting amb’s photo of that soon (probably tomorrow).
*BTW, Though many people think so, “Big Ben” is Not the name of the iconic tower, nor even the famous clock atop it. It is the name of the largest of the great, ancient bells which chime from within the tower. What is so often thought to be called Big Ben is actually called Elizabeth Tower: renamed from its original moniker, Clock Tower, in honour of the now late Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012. -tam💞

Closeup of Mexican Orange #Blossom #flowers now blooming-the only #plant in our back #garden at the moment that’s providing food for🐝&🦋This #shrub won’t bear fruit-we have it solely for these lovely #blooms -much needed as🥶temps set in. #bloomscrolling #Garden4Wildlife #photography -tam💞
It’s rare that I manage a photo myself, but yesterday I took this closeup of a few of the bounty of lovely white Mexican Orange Blossom flowers currently in bloom. They’re a much needed source of nectar & pollen for bees & the few butterflies that might still be around as temperatures are rapidly cooling down. This shrub has suffered some from the Summer heatwaves & drought, but still managed not only to survive but is producing many flowers right now. Here we have long, glossy, green ovate leaves in abundance. (I did see quite a few leaves had yellowed & think that’s due to Summer’s heatwave/drought). With so much going into Autumnal mode, these pretty, six-petalled white flowers are a welcome sight. The petals are delicate & also ovate in shape, with many long, orange-tipped stamens standing out from their green centres. If the Sun manages to warm them, they do have a beautiful scent as well, although we never cut them to bring indoors. These are part of our efforts to try to Garden For Wildlife, insomuch as we can, given the changeable weather & lack of rain in our part of the country. With every post of flowers & trees we make, I ask you to please, if you can do anything at all to help wildlife in your area, please do.🙏 A pot of flowering plants for bees; an insect/bee hotel placed out of direct Sunlight; a birdbox-again up high & out of direct Sunlight; even a dish of fresh water every day-with a couple small stones to enable bees and small birds to climb out after a drink & or bath, respectively…any one of these things can make a difference between life & death for the many forms of wildlife at risk because of the severe weather patterns that are affecting so many places globally. Please, if you can do even one thing, please help them. This was their planet long before man came along to wreck it-even its atmosphere, changing weather for the worse-far faster than prior predictions. Global Warming is happening & wildlife need our help🙏-tam💞

The Unforgivable Sin -a long #FreeForm #poem by~Mischa💞revised since He 1st✍️it-Time put much into perspective. Yet #sorrow & #guilt linger…a need for #forgiveness 💔Deep gratitude to any & everyone who takes time to read this🙏~💞 #BraveWrite #forgive #poetry #Emoetry #writingcommunity #blueskypoets
The Unforgivable Sin

So gentle, seeming sweet, and so innocently
That heart of hers appeared to be surrendered,
So freely and so utterly to me given...
Unworthy Soul, felt I, e'er to have received it,
Not knowing yet what seethed beneath "gentility..."

Oh, wouldst that I could have Loved her Better
And yet I loved with everything I had:
Gave her my Heart's awakened and impassioned verse...
All of my Self and all her dreams envisioned...
My disembodied Soul somehow "embodied" just for her,
Striving to be more than I e'er meant to be...

Only to watch in horror as her mask began to melt,
Revealing her true nature: heartshaking the Reality...
My conscience torn and tortured by the Truth
I tried to love her still, even knowing I'd been misled...
Til my disillusioned, yet guilt-riven Soul - gasping for freedom -
Finally broke with her and sadly fled...

My Heart ached with her pain as well as my own...
I watched thereon from afar safe distance
As, uncloaked, her madness burgeoned, violently let loose...
Leaving all destroyed, Love strafed by Lies witnessed...
And I left with one unanswerable question: had I been Seducer
Or - by her mask of sweetness - been Seduced?

"Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive."

~ End Quote by Sir Walter Scott

We realise this may prove unfathomable by many a reader-if any do take time to read it all. For those who endeavour to not only read such a long confessional & deeply personal poem, but to possibly understand even a bit of its meaning, I am humbled and most grateful for your patience. If you choose to leave a Like, I thank you once more. If not, however, believe me, I understand. This is a tale I found hard to tell and yet it simmered in that well of Being called Conscience for so long, I could not help but✍️it down, revising it over Time as the Reality of what happened seemed clearer…yet still it troubles my Heart to this day. I wish Her Well…in every way…~Mischa💞

Photo of a squirrel* eating a half-grape in our small back garden. This was taken from inside, so as not to startle him, so wound up with peculiar discolourations & lines from glass/shadows between amb & this fellow up on our wee patch of grass. The curved edge thing on the right is a glimpse of our birdbath, which was a bit off-balance at that point, so looks low on water, but actually has plenty on its other side. Please Garden For Wildlife, however you might be able to help them. They do need our help more than ever, with the chaos brought on by man’s destruction/global warming, the loss of habitats all over. All of wildlife in so many places are in need of help. From a bird feeder, a birdbath, a dish of water set in shade, a bee hotel, a flowering potted plant…leaving your grass to grow wild (no-mow months) - there are so many ways you can help the many forms of wildlife that are trying to survive in often dire circumstances. Please do what ever you can.🙏~💞
*I noticed that some American Grey squirrels (such as this one) which are actually an invasive species in🇬🇧& nearly wiped out the tiny, native Red Squirrels (who survive now only in isolated & protected areas of the🇬🇧) actually have developed a bit of reddish brown in their fur. This, amb believes, is not from interbreeding, but possibly an adaptation to the harsher climate this much farther North than most of 🇺🇸. Otoh perhaps I am misremembering the Grey Squirrels I grew up with…& maybe they always had a bit of red to them. I’ve been away for a very long time. 🤷‍♀️-tam💞

The Cynic -a #poem by-tam💞✍️a very long time ago. It was inspired by someone w/whom I was working at the time. The Cynic - a poem written very long ago, inspired by someone I worked with at the time. I had been dabbling with poetry since childhood. This was later. And my Other, Mischa, would not begin to write poems himself until the late 1990s. In the interim between when I scribbled this on a piece of paper & the time when Mischa started writing Love poems, We had often written “scenes,” bits of stories, i.e. only prose. It would take many years & much Life Experience-before We began to write quite different types of poetry, both together & separately. This poem is from when I was very young, on my own…simply writing what I saw in someone with whom I worked. He was the epitome of its title. I do not wonder what became of him…I would have far more harsh Life lessons & people in the decades that followed & since…. As did the beloved Soul with whom I have long shared all, who chose as his nom de plume a name we had often used in past prose “stories,” Mischa. Btw, He wishes it known that He is Not the subject of this poem! 🥰-tam💞

The Cynic

cold
pipe metal
rusted and decaying
from the inside through

a few careless scratches
started it all
and wet with unshed tears
began the slow death

dreams were spat out
no room for them
in the dark mustiness
of a closed heart

Detail of Sleeping Hermaphroditus -artist unknown; Roman copy of an #ancient #sculpture The #marble mattress was added later, sculpted by Gianlorenzo Bernini. Full views/more info below, but We prefer this poignant closeup. #Hellenistic #art #mythology en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleepin...
Closeup showing only the curly-haired head of the “Sleeping Hermaphrodite” - a marble Roman copy of a much earlier sculpture, artist unknown. Frankly, We find this closeup more beautiful than the whole. It feels intimate, as it zooms in on the figure’s beautiful sleeping face, resting on his/her (their) arm in repose…Indeed its beauty is so ambiguous it could be seen as either male or female. The full sculpture reveals it to- in fact- be both & in appropriate physical detail. To be honest, when we found this Free Image closeup - before research led us to the whole - we thought the figure was male. In any case, it is an exquisite work of ancient art, based on the mythological character of Hermaphroditus, from which, down the centuries, that term for a person born with the physical characteristics of both sexes is derived. ~💞

“Darkling I listen; and, for many a time
I have been half in love with easeful Death,
Call'd him soft names in many a mused rhyme,
To take into the air my quiet breath;
Now more than ever seems it rich to die,
To cease upon the midnight with no pain,
While thou art pouring forth thy soul abroad
In such an ecstasy!
Still wouldst thou sing, and I have ears in vain-
To thy high requiem become a sod.”

#Birds 2 Long-Tailed Tits feeding on a suet-filled coconut shell in our back #garden These are my fav of all🇬🇧birds-so tiny, swift & nimble, so v.hard to📸. More about them here-btw ours look more like pics 10 & 35: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-ta... Please 🙏 #Garden4Wildlife #photography -amb
amb managed to capture this-albeit slightly blurry-photo of two Long-Tailed Tits, as they cling to the edges of a suet/seed&bug-filled coconut shell hanging from a branch of the Winter-flowering Honeysuckle tree in our back garden. They’re so quick it’s rare for us to be able to get a photograph of them, so this is a treat. We see more & more of them in a great flock once the weather turns cooler-which it has a bit, lately. Here they’re safely surrounded by a complex criss-cross of branches & the remaining green leaves on the tree. We make sure to hang these shells-& another type of RSPB suet feeder, which hangs from the chain just seen on the left side of this picture-up high, where they feel safe. Whilst they’ll sometimes come to the bird table, these suet coconut shells are their favourite & it’s such a delight to see them flitting about the garden in great numbers this time of year & thru Winter. They’ll need such food even more once the truly cold temps set in, especially because they do not usually retire to a nest at night in Winter. They gather in a long line along a tree branch & huddle together for warmth, half-sleeping side by side-continually exchanging places as far as who’s unlucky enough to be on the outside ends of the line-more exposed to cold. It always amazes me to see them survive each Winter…though at times it’s so sad to see a few less if the weather has been especially unforgiving. We do what we can to keep them fed thru the harsh months & the suet helps keep them warm & nourished. They don’t sing, but make little clicking, chit-chit noises. When I was more able & would go out to hang up-& take down before dark-shells, they’d flock around me, chit-chitting & unafraid: they seem to recognise me, knew I was no threat but the “bringer of food.”🥰I believe they act the same around amb tho are a bit more skittish than when I had charge of garden feeding. Many generations have returned over the decades & seeing them gladdens my❤️-tam💞

Ophelia -J.W.Waterhouse oil on canvas 1889 #art Waterhouse did more than one #painting of #Shakespeare ‘s tragic heroine, both beautiful. Here a brunette #Ophelia lays in a grassy field having gathered #flowers …the stream awaits beyond as she looks directly at us in #sorrow #Pre-Raphaelite #Tragedy
Ophelia was the subject of so many Pre-Raphaelite (& other) artists. We have our own favourites (Hughes’ & Millais’). Millais’ is more famous, but this thought-provoking depiction by Waterhouse shows a brunette haired Ophelia. (Many other paintings of her-including Our favourites-show her with red hair). Here she is lying in a grassy field, where there are scatterings of flowers amidst the grass. Dressed in a long, plain white dress, she has gathered some flowers & they lie in a tangle upon her partly raised thighs. Her left arm is raised, her hand pulling back some of her long, dark hair. We find two things about this especially striking: Ophelia is looking directly at the viewer, unflinchingly baring her deep sorrow. Though her cheeks are flushed with pink, her lips still red with Life, we know from the story of Hamlet that she is destined to drown herself… And that is the second thing We find haunting: the stream is only a few yards beyond where she lies, mostly hidden by grasses but evident by the line of trees and plants which mark out its path, just at the top of the painting…So we see her as she ponders her fate, after Hamlet’s seemingly mad & cruelly brusque rejection of her…She looks at us almost as if to challenge us to tell her not to go through with it. But the stream awaits…and we know she will go there to die, in despair. How can something be so beautiful and yet so incredibly sad & prescient…Waterhouse has painted his own masterpiece of Ophelia. It will not be the only time he paints her & the next one will be very different indeed.~tamisar💞

#Canopy of #leaves August 2026: the view looking up thru our #JapaneseMaple aka #Acer as well as the leafy umbrella that is our Winter-flowering #Honeysuckle Both #trees -while relatively small-provided much needed #shade & shelter for #birds thru the #heatwaves #Garden4Wildlife #photography -amb
This photo by amb was taken from a low vantage point, looking up through the-mostly-bright green leaves of our Japanese Maple (Acer) tree. One of its leaves had taken a hard hit from the heat & Sun & was already red & shrivelled. That leaf died, sadly. But the rest of the tree has stayed healthy & the only other red you may see-in the middle of the lower edge here-is actually one of many red seed pods that were already forming last month. Above the Acer’s leaves is a mix of deep bluegreen & yellow green leaves mostly belonging to our large Winter Flowering Honeysuckle tree-which has, over decades, had to be trimmed back of dead branches and now resembles a mere umbrella in shape. Still, both of these trees have provided sheltered shade, perches & bugs for the many varieties of small birds who visit our little back garden. Looking up to a pale blue sky here, you can see how the criss-cross of myriad leafy branches forms a protective canopy. This served that side of the garden-which is the only side in shade-well, especially for the birds. Amidst these branches they found escape from the hot Sun. Also, at the onset of the series of heatwaves, we had moved the birdbath to that side of the garden so that it, too, was in shade-meaning the water was cool for all birds coming to drink & bathe there. Normally the birdbath would have been on the opposite side of the garden, beneath an overhang of Jasmine in the thick hedgerow we have on the other side. When we realised the Sun & heat were so intense that the bath water itself was actually too hot for birds, it was quickly moved to this shady side, where it remained until the heatwaves finally ended. Before this year, these were things we didn’t have to think about. Global warming taught us some hard lessons about not only moving the birdbath, but also planting & placement of potted plants: the Acer’s actually in a large pot. Throughout the heat, we moved things to help wildlife. Please Garden For Wildlife if you can🙏~💞

#Flowers past: #Hellebores 2018 These #blooms are one of the best #plants you can get if you want to #Garden4Wildlife because they thrive thru even thru cold months-providing food for overwintering🐝 A perennial, they flower for yrs-beautiful & such a boon to hungry🐝 #bloomscrolling #photography -amb
A mix of both white & deep rose pink Hellebore flowers in full bloom. They have 5 overlapping ovate petals which make a lovely star-like shape. Most often their blooms will bow down-protecting their precious pollen & nectar from rain & snow-so this view of them so open is special. On the white flowers, streaks of green seem painted outward from a centre which sports a spray of long, slender yellow stamens surrounding a short, bright yellow stigma. The deep rose flowers have similar structures but their stamens are a more muted yellow, the beautiful deep rose colour dominating. Their foliage is a rich, dark green, veined in a paler shade of green. Those leaves are thick - not delicate like many Summer flowers. This helps them thru cold Winter months. Hellebores are a wonderful thing to plant if you wish to Garden For Wildlife through the cooler months of late Autumn, right on thru the coldest Winters & even into Spring & Summer. They will bloom & thrive even if snowed upon, though we recommend that once snowfall has stopped, simply try to gently brush the snow away from the flowers and leaves. They’re an incredibly valuable source of food for overwintering bees - yes, there are bees which are still about in Winter & they need food! This Hellebores will provide for months upon months, year after year. Not only can they lend beauty to the smallest garden spot, they can spread, even cross-breed, without intervention & all the while they provide much-needed food for bees throughout the year, most especially though in colder months. Whilst the flowers in this photo are from March 2018, their “descendants” still come up in various spots in our small front garden, beyond this large cluster which was the beginning of many years’ worth of beauty & food for bees. Please, how ever you might be able to, try to Garden For Wildlife.🙏~💞

Signs of #Life -After months of drought came #rain & with it, amidst rotting #LeafLitter & dead stems of #plants dried up by the🥵up sprouted these #seedlings #Green #Hope against the dark #rain soaked soil in our #garden We’ll see what they grow to be…🙏🌱 #Garden4Wildlife #photography -amb
As described in the main post, here is a smattering of tiny green-leaved seedlings emerging through freshly rained-upon, dark brown earth. There’s still much leaf litter-we always “leave the leaves” as ground cover, knowing snails, slugs & time will break them down, enriching the soil. Leaf litter left on a garden space over cold months can help insulate & protect bulbs deep below, too. Our little front garden suffered much from heatwaves & another invasion of russian sage laid waste to many flowering plants that might otherwise have flourished in Summer months. But that invasive sage-as harmful as it proved with its overtaking of space-also proved drought-proof, providing hundreds of tiny light purple flowers upon which bees & butterflies fed. We also have a Buddleia-aka a Butterfly Bush-which thrived thru the heatwaves & is still producing spikes of purple flowers that draw hungry bees & butterflies. We finally started receiving some much needed rain in recent weeks, which has awakened these tiny sprouts…We don’t know yet what they will grow to be, but it’s a wonderful thing to see signs of life emerge after such a dreadfully long period of punishing heat & drought. In truth, even the rain we’ve had is nowhere near enough to bring our region out of drought…That will take much more, months of it. Meanwhile, we watch as even leaves of many of our bulb plants are coming up-completely out of season! Nature is finding a way. Please, if you are able, try to Garden For Wildlife. Scattered wildflower seeds, potted flowering plants-many things bloom in Autumn-& especially if it’s still hot where you are, a daily dish or tray of fresh water in shade…any or all of these things can help save the lives of bees, butterflies, birds & even smaller forms of vital wildlife. Rain has started regrowth…but temps are cooling. We hope what flowers we still have continue…& perhaps others may grow yet.🙏🌱~💞

Path in a Forest -Camille Pissarro oil on canvas c.1859 #art A beautiful #landscape #painting rich w/vivid colour-exactly as its title says: tall #trees line an earthen path into a #forest #Impressionism #Post-Impressionism About the artist: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camille...
Incredibly tall trees dominate Pissarro’s canvas, with a thickly painted earthen path leading through this forest. The reddish brows paint of the path is so thickly applied it’s almost tactile & really does convey the sense of bare earth that has been well trodden upon. Light dapples the path from the left to right, suggesting some Sunlight peeking through. The path is lined on both sides by enormous trees, with green grass beneath. At the base of one tree on the right sits a lone figure wearing a red hat & some garment with white sleeves. It’s unclear whether this is a woman or man, but they seem to be sitting there reading. Far in the upper left corner of the scene is a glimpse of a sky so richly turquoise in colour it lends an atmosphere of fantasy, rather than realism. While the tall trees which lead into the darkness of the forest are painted with some realism in their trunks, their foliage is a gorgeous green, Impressionistic rather than well defined leaves. To our eyes this painting is a wondrous mix of both realism and Impressionism. It’s a beautiful woodland that seems to exist in a world apart. Even the figure-not clearly defined- leaves it up to the viewer to interpret. We found this beautiful, especially for its ethereal quality and splendid colour. One can imagine walking that earthen path and continuing into the deep forest beyond…~💞

#Flowers past: Sept 2025-newly planted #Pansy closeup in our small front #garden This & other #flowering #plants set into cleared soil provided a late season boon last yr for #bees 🐝🥰 #Garden4Wildlife #bloomscrolling #photography -amb
Closeup of a newly planted Pansy in our small front garden a year ago - September 2025. Its 3 white main petals have a beautiful dark purple pattern on them which resembles a butterfly! Its two “back petals” are a lovely shade of purple. This closeup also shows the tiny, golden yellow centre of the flower, where bees would find food at a time of year when other sources can be scarce. But every flowering plant, tree & shrub can help wildlife, especially bees, who are in desperate need of help across the globe as habitats disappear thru mankind’s undoing & damage. Please, even if you don’t have a garden, you can still help Garden For Wildlife. A pot of flowering plants-there are many varieties which flower in Autumn-can provide a much needed oasis of nectar & pollen. If temperatures are still very hot where you live, please-if you have a shady spot, even on a balcony, try to set out a dish or tray-such as those used under potted plants for drainage- and keep it filled every day with fresh, clean water. Setting a couple small rocks in the water will help bees (yes, they do need water!) & small birds to climb out & escape when they are done drinking (or bathing, as birds also need to do, as well as have water to drink). Such a simple step can save so many little lives and make a difference at a time when wildlife of all sizes need our help more than ever. Please, if you can do just one thing to help wildlife, please do what you can.🙏~💞

#WeepingWillow & other #trees & #shrubs growing beside the #sun dappled #River Avon on a blue sky day. Recent rain has helped rejuvenate #plants & the 5 #rivers wh/criss-cross thru our small city…though much of the South🇬🇧remains in drought conditions. #photography -amb
A huge Weeping Willow is central to this picture, growing on the right bank of the River Avon as it wanders through the centre of our small market town. This was taken by amb from a vantage point of one of the bridges which cross the Avon as it makes its way through beneath streets. Many smaller trees & lush shrubs of lighter yellow green grow along the left bank. The rippling river itself has places which are dappled with the Sunlight of that blue-sky morning, some of that azure reflected in the textures of the moving water. Many waterfowl would normally live on this river, even nesting in some places. In the past We have seen small Coots, Moorhens, Mallards & Swans on this river. We wonder how they made it through the drought this year, when river levels would have been ever lower than they are here -trust me, the water level, while active and flowing, is far lower than we would normally see it. Still it has had some replenishment from the recent rain. And willows will always find & take up a lot water, as this beautiful tree is evidence: flourishing, its long strands of green leaves spilling from its high crown nearly down to the water.~💞

The Angel of Grief Weeping Over the Dismantled Altar of Life- W.W. Story #art #sculpture #Memorial 2nd #photography -amb #11September2001 #25Years #EndTheTyrannyOfHate #Resist #Music #song by Dead Can Dance fr/their💿Towards The Within: “Sanvean” expresses all the💔of This Day & All The Days since…💞
The Angel of Grief Weeping Over The Dismantled Altar of Life -a memorial sculpture created by William Wetmore Story out of his unbearable sorrow over the loss of his wife, Emelyn, who is buried here. This is located in The Protestant Cemetery in Rome, Italy, where many artists, poets & all non-Catholic citizens who died in Rome are buried. The poets John Keats & part of fellow poet Percy Bysshe Shelley are buried in this same cemetery, which is a peaceful, walled oasis within the bustling city, not far from the Coliseum. Story himself died within a year of losing his beloved wife. This was his last sculpture and has come to represent Grief and Loss for so many people.
We felt this was the most fitting image on this sad 25th anniversary of 9/11…For indeed, Life’s Altar began to be dismantled on that terrible day…It tore a wound into America that has only festered, been deepened & worsened by the sepsis of hatred that has been stirred up & infected the body of society in the years since. The wounds of 9/11 have been turned into a deep chasm of divisiveness, the toxic fuel of hatred poured into the abyss by many since, most especially the current “POTUS” his administration & those who have followed his path of ignorance and hate, only encouraged by the tyranny that has all but destroyed democracy. It is anathema to all those who died on that day & the millions since in the events which followed. Such hate dishonours the memory of those lost on this date & in the years since. We pray that one day the toxic miasma which descended upon America -& across the globe- will one day be lifted…That eyes may one day see more clearly what our country truly was meant to be…that the lamp of Liberty will shine again upon a country founded by immigrants (my own ancestors among them) centuries ago. 🕊️❤️‍🩹☮️ -tam💞The Angel of Grief Weeping Upon the Dismantled Altar of Life - by William Wetmore Story. amb took this side-view photograph of this heartbreakingly poignant memorial sculpture when we visited the Protestant Cemetery in Rome back in 2007. Mischa and I had originally visited as part of a pilgrimage to Rome to visit where the poet John Keats spent the last months of his life; the place where he lived his last and died…and this hallowed, quiet cemetery where he was buried, not so far from here. In Keats’ time this was all a pasture grazed by sheep and the only place where non-Catholics were permitted to be buried in Rome. The sheep are long since gone, replaced by many feral cats which roam about freely…A brick wall now encloses the very crowded cemetery, sheltering it from the busy city that has grown up around it. It is a place of sorrow, yes, but also one of peace, with many trees still growing where they stood even in Keats’ time……~💞

Past #flowers March 2025: Lovely #Scilla #blooms in #Spring last yr. These star-shaped #blossoms are from #bulbs & will spread-as these did. Wonderful for🐝! Sadly this yrs drought stopped many things fr/growing in our wee #Garden4Wildlife these among them... #bloomscrolling #photography -amb
Star-shaped Scilla flowers, their 5 slender petals are pale lavender in colour, turning white towards the centre, where a cluster of very pale yellow, short stamens stand. These Scilla will spread from bulbs dividing. But we suspect they might also spread by seed, as a single one of these turned up in our neighbour’s front garden at random. Wherever they bloom, they brighten a garden with beauty &more importantly-feed bees, which is so vital. This year’s heatwaves & drought suppressed many things we would normally have seen blooming. We hope recent rains may revive many of those & we’re actually seeing signs of some bulb plants returning-but so late in the year! If those things do wind up blooming despite the now cool temps, it will prove a blessing for bees, butterflies & other pollinators in need of food, At least our Buddleia-aka Butterfly Bush-has flourished, producing many, many spikes of tiny flowers that have drawn bees & butterflies. I wish we could capture some of those on camera, but we don’t have that kind of advanced camera equipment, only a meagre phone. Besides which one would have to stand outside all the time waiting & hoping just to catch a quick snap…impractical for amb. But we do see the bees & butterflies from our window & knowing they’re finding food in our small patch is enough.
I’ve digressed, sorry. These Scilla were plentiful in Spring 2025. They’re such lovely flowers…we hope they return. We also hope that if there’s any way you are able to do even just one thing to Garden For Wildlife-a pot of flowering plants, a dish of fresh water placed in shade on hot days-that you will do whatever you are able to. With habitats disappearing & Global Warming wreaking havoc with devastating weather & wildfires, the world’s wildlife need all the help you can give.🙏~💞

Before & After Bounty: #Blackthorn #blossoms in #Spring turn to #Sloe #berries come #Fall Once again #Nature provides a #Garden4Wildlife in a nearby #hedgerow as #flowers fed🐝. Sloe berries will eventually feed🐦 (Please see ALT) A beautiful cycle of Life. #shrubs #bloomscrolling #photography -amb
A cluster of white petalled Blackthorn blossoms back in Spring, with 5 ovate petals and a flurry of tall yellow stamens splaying out from the yellow-green centres of each flower. Bees will have fed on these & pollinated them…which makes for the light blue Sloe berries you’ll see in the 2nd photo. The berries have what’s called a “bloom” on them - that is, a slightly dusty appearance - a matte finish, if you will. This is Nature’s own Garden For Wildlife, feeding bees earlier in the year and, eventually, providing sustenance for birds. (See 2nd ALT for more on that). The woody stems are dark brown with tiny streaks of white on them: this is a sign that the wood is older, a long established shrub. Photo by amb. ~💞These are the “matte finish” light blue berries -with a “ bloom” on them - of Blackthorn shrubs & they are commonly called Sloe berries. (Yes, as in the Sloe gin some people make from them). At this stage, the berries are actually too tough for birds to eat! They will wait until Winter frosts actually soften the fruits, at which point birds will happily enjoy eating them, especially as there are few other types of berries by that time of year, (as opposed to now when blackberries & Hawthorn berries are plentiful, as seen in previous posts). Here, though, are freshly emerged blue Sloe berries, very pretty amidst their long, narrow, pointed, yellowish-green leaves. Given time and frosts, they will be welcome food for birds indeed. Photo by amb. Please, however you might be able to, Garden For Wildlife.🙏~💞

#Sunlight backlighting an #Ancient #Oak #tree wh/stands alone at the end of a nearby lane, #shrubs & #vines round its 2-trunked base. This Oak has been growing for at least 100 yrs…A beautiful living #habitat it‘s survived much. We🙏it can withstand whatever comes💚 #Garden4Wildlife #photography -amb
Another priceless Ancient Oak towards the end of the same lane as two others - even older - we have posted photos of this year. This one stands apart, its leafy crown beautifully round. It is surrounded at its base by many wild shrubs & low-growing vines, all of which make for a rich habitat for so many creatures. We think (hope & pray) this is another tree which is protected by a TPO (Tree Preservation Order) as it is near an expanse of land which, sadly, is destined to become a massive grocery store/drive-in complex. Such amazing Natural works of art & Hearts of Life, these mighty oaks are irreplaceable & need such protection. Man has done his worst to wreck this planet & all living creatures of every type are feeling the ill effects of that globally. Given the severity of this year’s heatwaves & the drought under which we still are trying to live, it’s no small miracle this great Oak survives. This is a living, breathing Being: home, shelter & nest to so many & varied life forms. May it continue to grow, outliving those who would have the whole planet paved over for their own greed. Those who do so damn all Life in the process, for this tree, its birds, bees, worms, snails & multitudes of creatures in Nature’s chain are the very foundations of All Life On Earth, land & sea… When - if ever - will those in power realise Nature must be both protected & respected? It seems it falls to grassroots organisations & campaigners to save what can be saved, while it can still be saved. We cannot afford to lose such Beauty, for it is the epitome of Life itself. Meanwhile, each of us can try to do what we can to Garden For Wildlife: they need our help more than ever. Even a daily dish of fresh water placed in shade, a pot of flowering plants, &/or sowing Wildflower seeds on bare ground & watering them in, can help bees and birds survive. Please do whatever you can, if you are able.🙏~💞

This free image (not our photo) shows a woman hunched over as she’s perched on a discarded chair, its seat cushion missing. Behind is a wall made of rough hewn stones & mortar, almost like a basement of an abandoned, old building. The woman is dressed entirely in black, down to her black trainers (aka sneakers). The whole picture is in black and white, apart from her long, strawberry blonde hair, which falls forward from her downturned head, curtaining her in such a way that we cannot see her face. But from her crouched pose, as if she’s hugging herself tightly against the chilled loneliness of that abandoned place, one can imagine the face behind that waterfall of hair is one of sorrow.~💞

2005 #Green #serenity This small spot in a #garden we used to visit was a favourite place to stop: stone steps led down to a place beside the #AvonRiver so #peaceful & lush with #vines #shrubs & #trees Just a secluded spot where we could sit, finding quiet solace-a world away💚. #photography amb
Green grassed lawn leads to a weathered, grey stone wall that runs beside the boundary of the River Avon, which winds through the extensive gardens, of which this is just a small and quiet part. There is a break in the wall here, where matching sets of steps lead down from either side to a small spot (out of view here) right on the riverbank, Decorative stone ornaments top small pillars in places of the walls’ separation-one a large though empty stone urn, dark with old lichen; another is a simple concrete ball atop another waist-high pillar. All around thick vines drape over the lichen spotted walls, making it seem so lush and green. There are huge trees overhanging the river, some growing on the opposite riverbank. They lend it a dark beauty with their sheltering shade. When we’d visit we loved to go down the few steps to that unseen spot, where one could simply sit in peace and quiet. Sometimes we’d see ducks swim by or even the pair of swans which used to live on the river which wound through the expansive estate’s gardens. But here was a part of the river which flowed by in a relatively straight length of the stone-walled boundary of the garden. Sometimes, before we stepped down to the river, we would even see a beautiful peacock roaming freely on the grass off to the left, which was closer to the stately mansion, a part of the gardens off limits to visitors. But this spot was special, just a little -nearly hidden- place where a few steps led us to such a beautiful, peaceful seat by the river…how we miss it.💚~💞
