#GreatTit on RSPB coconut shell full of suet, seeds & mealworms. This larger of the tit family of #birds is happily feeding in our back #garden on one of 2 suet-based food sources hanging from our Honeysuckle #tree Such food‘s vital as weather grows🥶 #GardenForWildlife #photography -amb
Apologies for the lack of clarity in this photo, but any picture amb tries to take of the many small birds here is tricky: they’re quick & constantly flitting about from tree to shrubs & the dense hedgerow we have growing on the opposite side to this tree. Lucky to catch any snap of one, tbh. But that’s probably a good thing: their instinctive swiftness is a necessary life-skill, especially in a neighbourhood rife with so many peoples’ cats, let loose to roam & predate on birds terribly. As one of few places in our court that try to have wildlife-friendly habitats instead of gravel/all-concrete slabbed back gardens, we try as best as we can to place bird food in places hard for cats to access but easy for small birds to feed & fly quickly. As habitats disappear rapidly, wildlife need all the help you might be able to give them. Please Garden For Wildlife, however you may be able to. If you do have bird feeders, make sure they’re cleaned w/a non-toxic disinfectant cleaner-such as Ark-Klens-rinsed thoroughly & dried before adding fresh food. Birdbaths too need to be kept clean & with fresh water daily. But even if you haven’t any place for feeders, a dish or tray of fresh clean water can help both bees and birds. If you’re in a hot climate, place any water source in a shady spot. Be sure to add a couple small rocks for bees & birds to climb out safely. A pot of flowering plants can still provide life-saving food to over-wintering bees. There are many types of flowering plants that can still thrive in colder temps, such as Hellebores. You can make such a difference if you do just one thing to help the wildlife near where you live, wherever that may be. You don’t have to have a garden: a balcony or stoop can be a vital pit-stop for birds & bees. Please Garden for Wildlife: bees, birds, snails, slugs-they are all part of a complex, amazing ecosystem…on a planet that was theirs long before man came along & started wrecking it. Please help Wildlife if you can.🙏~💞

Yes! It’s that Sunlight thru rising waves…Many more famous artists -i.e. Turner-painted wild seascapes. But when we saw this, it just took our breath away. How is this not as well renowned as Turner’s work? Even if it was a one-off for a landscape artist, it deserves the same level of recognition.

Again, gorgeous…slightly less deep in this view (but that may be an optical illusion on my part🤔). I do love all the🌲, the green above & the rocks’ different colours & textures…& the river beautifully captured, snaking thru the bottom of the canyon it created over millennia. Fantastic photos, all! 👏

I’m such an eejit…It suddenly occurs to me that this Grand Canyon may have nothing whatsoever to do with the one in AZ…🫢Is this Grand Canyon of Yellowstone not a continuation of the one in AZ? If so, apologies for my mistake! It’s beautiful just the same-especially w/all those🌲🌲🌲on its steep sides.

Wow…As deep-surely-as the part of the Grand Canyon I saw in AZ (the tourist-y area, wh/has changed much-& not for the better-since I visited w/H1). The colours here are different-wh/makes sense, given the geology. Here the colours are more muted, but the depth & beauty still breathtaking.👏

Clearing Up, Coast of Sicily -Andreas Achenbach oil on canvas 1847 #art In trying to research something else entirely we came across this stunning #seascape #painting The #sun glowing thru turbulent #waves is simply gorgeous. Here’s more about this #landscape #artist en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andreas...
This scene of a stormy sea, with huge waves being “backlit” by the rising Sun, is nothing short of spectacular. Though enormous, dark clouds dominate the right side of the sky, it is that cloud-hidden, rising Sun on the left which, in illuminating the waves, seems to offer hope of - literally - a sea change eventually. How Achenbach was able to achieve almost translucence in the “wall” and tips of one particular wave just to the right of centre is beyond our ken. Scattered across the skies are the arcing wings of many seabirds in a chaotic sweep above the stormy waters. Wish we could have found a better resolution image, but this was all on offer in the Wiki article. If you happen to live near Baltimore in Maryland, US, this beautiful artwork is said to be in the Walters Art Museum there. -💞

The Net #poem ~Sara Teasdale I made you many and many a song, Yet never one told all you are- It was as though a net of words Were flung to catch a star; It was as though I curved my hand And dipped sea-water eagerly, Only to find it lost the blue Dark splendour of the sea. #ClassicPoets
Free image (not our photo) or a deep blue Night Sky over an equally dark blue sea, with low mountains silhouetted on the horizon. In the sky are the circular trails of stars, as one might see in a time-lapse photograph of such a night. There are only many concentric rings of their light above the placid blue waters. As in Sara Teasdale’s beautiful poem, one cannot capture the stars themselves... And as anyone who has cupped their hand to hold water from the sea, it loses its wondrous colour in the palm of your hand…
As neither Mischa nor I are able to ✍️at this time, I post this poem from one of my favourite poets…These are lines I wish I had written myself, for the Beloved Poet with whom I am inexplicably yet inexorably bound…Whose beauty and wonder I cannot possibly capture in words… ~tam💞

More #Violas amb bought many of these wee #flowers While some were planted in our front #garden these were potted in 2 faux terracotta planters on the small #patio out back. More food for🐝as we try to #Garden4Wildlife Note the vivid blue one in the bottom pot! #bloomscrolling #photography -amb
Two faux terracotta planters filled with a variety of lovely Violas, which - as we said in our recent post of ones planted in the front garden-are like tiny Pansies in shape & petal formation. They’re all good for overwintering bees, especially as we’re now getting cold weather & bees’ food sources are scarce. These came in a multitude of colours: from all purple ones, to purple/yellow & even one vivid blue one in the bottom planter (lower lefthand side). amb does what she can to keep at least some things going for wildlife & buying a plethora of these pretty Violas on a deal at one of our local grocery’s garden shop seemed just the right thing to try again-last year she did something similar, only with both Pansies & Violas. Bees are in sharp decline globally due to manmade effects on the earth’s climate, as well as so many habitats being destroyed for either building or money-making profit. Please, if there is anything you can do to help the wildlife in your area, please try. A pot of flowering plants like these can prove a lifesaving pit stop for hungry bees. A dish or tray of fresh water set in shade (if your weather is currently hot) can make such a difference to both bees-which DO need to drink as well as find nectar & pollen!-& birds, who need water to drink & to bathe in on a daily basis. If you put out a dish or tray of water, be sure to add a couple small rocks so that bees & small birds have a way to climb out & escape. Keep the dish clean & freshen water daily. A birdbox &/or bee hotel, placed up high & out of direct Sunlight gives shelter & places to breed. Even if you don’t have anywhere to do these things, maybe there’s a barren spot of land nearby where you might scatter some wildflower seeds. They do well in poor soil, actually & again their eventual flowers & grasses might make such a difference to so many forms of wildlife. Please Garden For Wildlife if you can.🙏~💞

#Moon & #Flowers - William #Morris #textile design #art This seems more like a painting than something for fabric. What a gorgeous scene Morris created here-1 of many Moon-themed designs. We chose this one for the #Autumnal colours in its framing border of🍁 #leaves & blooms before a huge Full Moon…
Beneath a large Full Moon in a deep turquoise night sky, Morris has created a rich scene: a foreground of symmetrical layered hillsides form the base of a border at the bottom, made up of fallen Autumnal leaves amidst many daisy-like flowers that seem to grow up the length of the two bare trees on either side. It makes such a beautiful “window” to the scene beyond: faraway, dark slopes topped with what look like short-needled fir trees in silhouette. At this point all trees seem leafless or spare, even the distant evergreens. And yet, in the forefront there’s Life in all its Seasons of rich beauty, forming that lovely “frame” that starts with the bed of colourful Autumn leaves below mixed with tiny flowers, continuing upward on both sides with many more flowers, everything done in such rich colours and detail…Even the night sky is an unusual shade of turquoise, with its strata of misty clouds and several tiny white-dot stars all beautifully lit by the enormously Full Moon, which itself is partly hidden by silhouettes of bare branches and glimpses of flowers that seem transparent and golden against its bright light. How Morris imagined this for use in textiles We do not know. It is, as said, one of so many Moon and flowers (or simply Moon) designs he created, many of which were advertised on posters for an exhibition of them. We would gladly have this as a large print on our wall, so beautiful it is. ~💞

3 stems of #Gladioli #flowers tied to bamboo sticks: wind nearly left them flat! Their huge bright pink #blossoms hold vital food for🐝as🥶weather starts. In the background is a dense #Cotoneaster #shrub -a #Garden4Wildlife in itself-providing🐝flowers & #berries for🐦 #bloomscrolling #photography -amb
amb just managed to save these 3 stalks full of blossoming Gladioli (that’s the plural 🤷‍♀️) from being toppled by windy weather we had recently. Their huge, bright pink flowers are emerging later than usual - no doubt due to the bizarre changes in climate we’ve experienced in the last several months, with many heatwaves &, still, drought. But they will help feed overwintering bees & other pollinators. Behind them is a thicket hedge dividing our path from our neighbours’. Cotoneaster grows rapidly & must be trimmed frequently. But what it gives back in a plethora of tiny white flowers for bees, then a multitude of red berries (loved by Blackbirds especially) is such a boon to wildlife, as well as providing a dense hedge border in which there are many insects for birds to find & eat, too. Please, if you can do anything to help the wildlife in or near where you live, please do so. They need all the help they can get, especially in places where extremes of weather + man’s harmful influence, are hitting global habitats hard. Please Garden For Wildlife, however you might be able to.🙏~💞
