It's been a while since I looked for earthsci education resources 😅 does anybody know of raspberry pi seismometer activities for primary level? 🙏❤️⚡

🧪⚒️ Notice how newer updates about the Kamchatka quake say M8.8, though it was M8.7 earlier? That doesn't mean something changed about the quake - it just means people were able to consider more data in the magnitude calculation. This kind of revision happens a lot, especially for bigger quakes.

Scary example of why scientists advise people to "drop cover hold" rather than "run outside" during strong shaking.

The long-term tectonic motion that GPS sensors measure is usually extremely slow, but earthquakes can cause sudden shifts of the land. GPS data help reveal the peak ground displacement caused by the ongoing earthquake to more quickly and accurately estimate its magnitude.

A 40 year old seismograph may have been abandoned in the field 25 years ago, so I went searching for it to add to our historical collection.

Golly gosh, at 900+ followers I'll introduce myself! I'm Dr Tamarah King, an Australian earthquake geologist at Geoscience Australia (prev. UniMelb & Oxford Uni). My research spans active faults, earthquakes, paleoseismology & tectonic geomorphology in Australia & similar tectonic locations

I'd like to get serious about Bluesky but I'm finding it hard to transition back to chronological timelines after the ease of a tailored 'for you' page. Any suggestions? (can also only access Bluesky at home, seems to be blocked on my work network👎😤)

The M3.2 earthquake near Berridale (15km E of Jindabyne) NSW earlier this week has been followed by at least 6 additional events to date. This area has previously hosted several seismic clusters of <M2.5 as well as more significant events, eg. 1885 M4.6 and 1959 M5.3 earthquakes ⚒️🧪

The palm-lined trace of the San Andreas Fault near Indio, CA. In the distance is Pushawalla Canyon. North America is to the left; Pacific Plate to the right. Fault gouge produced due to the grinding action of the fault acts as a vertical barrier to groundwater flow; that's why the palms grow here.

Time for a comic for #ArtAdventCalendar! This one is from the start of 2023, from a random idea I had that made me laugh (typically how all my comics begin) One for the #geology, #geoscience and #SciArt comic fans
A four panel comic. The first panel shows colourful bumper cars - blue, green, red, and yellow - packed tightly together, text reads 'Plate tectonics are like bumper cars, packed tightly together'. The second panel shows the cars with arrows showing their relative movements in different directions, text reads 'They very slowly drift around, grinding past each other...' The third panel shows a side-on view of one blue car driving up over a yellow car sinking down into the ground, white arrows indicating their movements, text reads 'Then one will sink down into the ground, and another will drive up over it...' The fourth panel shows a person with wavy brown hair wearing a green shirt saying '...and that analogy quickly fell apart' and a second person with short, spiky brown hair wearing a pale green-yellow shirt responding 'What? It was just getting interesting!
