At my age you are expected to say that everything good is disappearing and everything bad is getting worse. But it’s so dispiriting to look around the world and to see leaders apparently on a crusade to make this true.

Liberals have tended to assume the benevolence and goodwill of state officials. Conservatives and Libertarians were always sceptical. And, it seems, they are now trying every trick they have to make their prophecy come true.

Avner de-Shalit and my maxim for a City of Equals is ‘I’m proud of my city and my city is proud of (people like) me’. The US cities standing up to ICE are showing what it is to live this idea.

It would take a two-word amendment to 42 U.S.C. § 1983 to subject ICE agents and other federal law enforcement officers to the same liability for constitutional violations that local and state officers currently face. If Congress actually cared about what it's seeing, it could pass that overnight.

In my world, there's a certain reluctance to being merely, or in a knee-jerk way, a resist lib. That's understandable, even commendable. On the other hand, let's be clear: It's a hell of lot better, morally and intellectually and politically, to be a resist lib than a Vichy conservative.

When the output of the highest court in the land wouldn't pass muster coming from first-year law students, it discredits the institutional legitimacy of the entire legal system. Nobody can pretend they are at the apex of the profession, intellectually credible even when you disagree with them.

As basic question from an ex-police reporter: Can some of our journalists detail the training regimen all these new federal agents receive? The lethal incompetence involving use of force and perameters of the 4A suggests they are just handed guns, masks and badges and told to go fuck people up.

Institutions take years to build up and can be destroyed very quickly, and so the burden of proof should be on anyone who wishes to make changes. It's come to something when progressives need to insist on this conservative wisdom while the ruling authoritarian anarcho-capitalists wield chainsaws.
