A green shield bug on the bark of a pine I planted about a decade ago. One of the best things about rewilding is seeing how much native wildlife moves back into the newly forming habitat. Here, that's everything from pine martens to the tiniest invertebrates.

Most of us are blind to how much unnatural levels of browsing by grazers impact the landscape. Not only by shaving vast areas bare, but shaping what survives. On this young oak that somehow managed to 'get away', for eg, the browse line is clear. There's an omnipresent, invisible strimmer at work.

National Trust’s Holnicote estate says restored wetlands and rivers offer proof of resilience to drought, wildfires and flooding Aerial footage of an estate in Somerset has revealed the benefits of rewilding land in the face of extreme weather brought about by the climate crisis. The area of the National Trust’s Holnicote estate where rivers have been returned to their natural courses and wetlands have been restored have remained green and lush during the five heatwaves across the summer. The silver washed fritillary evolved to lay its eggs in the bark crevices of oak trees. When the caterpillars hatch, they drop to the ground and seek out dog violet, the plant they evolved to eat. No oak or violet, no silver washed fritillaries. Get it? That's why native species matter: evolution.

It's now extremely hard for Irish people to conceive what a wild tree even looks like, with mostly only domesticated, tamed versions remaining. This rainforest holly gives an idea. Rewilding is how we allow not only wild trees back, but the entire ecosystems of which they're meant to be a part.

Ireland has three native filmy ferns, all of which are present on our farm: Tunbridge (right), Wilson's, and Killarney fern (left). They're closely associated with rainforest, though Wilson's likes slightly more open niches. Only a cell or two thick, the fronds are translucent, hence 'filmy'.
