Line 1 rider were stuck again this morning. For the people who rely on transit to get to work, school, appointments and home, “stuck” isn’t a minor inconvenience. It means being late for work, late to drop off your kids or late to get to an appointment. Ottawa needs a transit system that works.

I'm sure it is a work in progress, but the bus availability tracker now being offered by @bettertransitottawa.ca looks like a very powerful tool to shed light on the current bus challenges. bettertransitottawa.ca/tracker/bus-...

An oft-repeated statistic says men apply for a job when they have 60% of the qualifications while women wait till they have 100%. Pretty sure that stat was debunked, but … Several men seem to think that being Mayor is a suitable starter job for someone with no municipal experience. It’s not.

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day I joined many of my Council colleagues to mark the occasion at the Holocaust Memorial. Many speakers noted rising antisemitism and even Holocaust denialism in Canada. We all need to do more to combat that.

There's no longer any question: it's time to compensate transit riders for what they're going through. These pictures are heartbreaking - people going to evening shifts, home and family, class.

A coalition of Ottawa's public interest groups has today very eloquently called out Mark Sutcliffe's budget as presenting a false defintion of "affordability". The question more and more residents are asking is "affordable for who?". Read the letter here:

Does the City of Ottawa's draft 2026 budget really pursue affordability?

Some say that voting against a budget makes you part of the problem. I disagree. Healthy disagreement is part of responsible decision making. Residents expect us to test assumptions, debate ideas and make sure the budget reflects the realities they live with every single day.

Today, Lansdowne 2.0 was passed with a 15 - 10 vote at Council. This is going to be an important issue in 2026, and I hope you'll stay engaged with Council in the coming months.

Proposed changes from the Ontario government would drastically reduce protection for tenants. This is appalling and would put some folks in serious danger in this era of very low vacancy, skyrocketing rental rates, and rent decontrol. Nearly 40% of Ottawa residents are renters.
Changes to landlord-tenant disputes

The bill is proposing a number of changes when it comes to disputes between landlords and tenants. Among other things, tenants would be required to give prior notice of issues they intend to raise at hearings and would not be allowed to introduce new issues without warning. The province says this is to avoid adjournments where the parties aren’t prepared to speak to an issue.

The bill would also scrap the need for a landlord to offer a tenant compensation if they would like to take their property back for their own use, as long as they give 120 days notice. If the landlord gives less than that, they would still be required to provide one months rent or offer a comparable unit as compensation.

As well, the province wants to shorten the grace period to issue an eviction notice after rent non-payment, from 14 days to seven, and shorten the time to request a review of a final hearing order from 30 to 15 days.Making it easier for residential landlords to end leases

The province wants to explore the possibility of modifying “security of tenure,” currently enjoyed by tenants under the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA). The current law means tenants have a right to remain in their rental unit as long as they follow the lease agreement and the RTA. Landlords cannot evict tenants without a legally valid reason under the current law and after a fixed-term lease ends, the tenancy typically continues on a month-to-month basis.

But the Ford government says it would like to consult on “alternative options on lease agreement expiry” that would give landlords more control over their units, “allowing them to adjust tenancy arrangements based on market conditions, personal needs, or business strategies.”

On Sunday afternoon, 3-7 at Beyond the Pale at City Centre, I'll be doing the last of my stops on my listening tour. Hope to see many of you there for your chance to talk to me about building a city that works.

This morning, Mayor Sutcliffe held a press conference outlining the modified Lansdowne 2.0 recommendations before city councillors or the public had access to them. That’s unacceptable. Transparency and respect for Council should come before media rollouts.

Across Ottawa, from fairs and markets to townhalls and meetings, I’ve been hearing the same thing: people are frustrated and want a new direction for our city. We need a city that works, with reliable transit, strong services, repaired roads and community centres.

Great to see some of my colleagues this weekend as they do the work of engaging, supporting and celebrating the residents of their wards. I'm proud to work with people like Tim Tierney, Clarke Kelly, Ariel Troster, David Brown and Marty Carr who are on the ground each day. I see and thank you.

I'm overjoyed to say that the City is now consulting on re-naming the field house at Van Lang as the Paul Dewar Field House. I thank community members and Paul's wife Julia Sneyd for their patience and leadership. View the consultation details here: ottawa.ca/en/city-hall...

At some point, leaders need to lead by looking forward. The world isn't the same as it used to be. Instead of trying to put the genie back in the bottle, we can leverage opportunities that come with a decentralized city: stronger local economies, improved quality of life, cleaner air, safer streets.

I’m with Jeff. If we haven’t made the proper investments to ensure fast and frequent transit, this will just add more cars to the road and increase congestion in Centretown. Also: hybrid work arrangements are good for parents and caregivers—often women. Trust people to work where they do it best.

Tonight Coun. @arieltroster.com and I are co-hosting an early budget consultation. I've written up some thoughts on our budget ahead of that that I'd invite residents to read here: kitchissippiward.ca/2025/06/26/b...
