Financial insecurity and lack of resources puts people at risk of being trafficked. if you are serious about combatting trafficking then you need to be serious about providing people with housing, medical care, and living wages.

This would essentially make it a felony to use the internet. Considering how of our lives are online- email, banking, schooling, support groups, social media, etc. This would be an absolute nightmare.

Trust me when I tell you that few lawmakers have thought through any of the implications. Frighteningly few understand the technology. Others don't understand why we need privacy on the internet — or think only criminals do. That's why calling / writing / fighting is so important.

VPN bans are a direct response to age-verification. Legislators are frustrated that people are getting around their surveillance, but rather than rethink their strategy, they're doubling down and banning VPNs. Fight the Flock-ing of the internet.

True-crime culture will be tempted to turn this case into a tour of a “house of horrors.” The media will study every grotesque detail. Audiences may soon know more about a the killers creative persona than about the women whose lives may have ended there. That is another kind of disappearance.

People are not high-risk. Situations are dangerous. Predators are dangerous. Housing instability, criminalization, poverty, isolation, and institutional indifference create danger. A woman does not become less missing because her life was complicated.

When a missing woman has used drugs, traded sex, experienced homelessness, or had an arrest record, her disappearance is the consequence of a “high-risk lifestyle.” That phrase performs a moral trick. It shifts responsibility from the person who caused harm to the person forced to navigate danger.

Those facts may help investigators reconstruct what happened. But in public storytelling, they can also become code - signals telling the audience which lives to value less. We have seen this pattern before.

Investigators say they have identified 58 people depicted in the files. Seven are missing women. In recordings, four appear lifeless, while another video may show what happened to a fifth. News coverage has emphasized drugs, pornography, the women’s possible connections to street economies.

The U.S. legal system doesn’t just fail to rehabilitate—it actively harms. Police and prosecutors hold extraordinary power with little accountability. The system exceeds any moral or constitutional mandate, routinely using force against the marginalized —including sex workers—without consequence.

Contrary to popular belief, the majority of people in state prisons are not serving time for violent offenses. Many others are locked up pretrial, simply because they can’t afford bail, or are serving long sentences tied to poverty-related crimes like theft, drug possession, or probation violations.

We know sex workers are overpoliced. We know we’re disproportionately arrested. But what we don’t talk about enough is what happens after the cuffs go on—and how deep the stigma cuts inside the criminal legal system. The U.S. incarcerates over 2.2 million people—more than any other country.

When Women’s Health Becomes a Legal Question
There is something deeply wrong with the state of women’s health in America, and abortion is only one part of the story.

SWOP Behind Bars @swopbehindbars.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
But we should notice the recurring questions. Who gets studied? Who gets believed? Who gets treated? When does a medical problem become a legal problem? When does a health problem become a criminal one? And why does intervention become urgent only after something has gone wrong?

SWOP Behind Bars @swopbehindbars.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
We are going to ask a difficult question: How much of what is happening is inevitable, and how much have we created - or made worse - through policy choices? Abortion restrictions and menopause treatment are not the same issue. Neither is postpartum psychosis the same as maternal mortality.

These may look like unrelated stories. They aren't. Over the coming weeks, we are going to examine health across the lifespan: pregnancy, abortion, miscarriage, maternal health, postpartum mental illness, perimenopause & menopause, access to care and the collision between medicine and criminal law.
