Financial insecurity and lack of resources puts people at risk of being trafficked. if you are serious about combatting trafficking then you need to be serious about providing people with housing, medical care, and living wages.

Stigma kills. Stigma harms. Stigma prevents people from being able to access services. Stigma gets people arrested. Stigma pushes vulnerable people to the margins. Why are people still advocating for stigmatizing sex workers, despite knowing the harms it causes?

From @nicolerprause.bsky.social "The advice is spot on in redirecting this author who blamed porn for his preference to masturbate instead of have sex with his partner slate.com/advice/2026/... Masturbation, with or without porn, is *always* "easier" than accomodating another person's preferences."
Dear How to Do It,

Recently I have found myself more interested in masturbation than having sex with my partner. I’ve recognized that this was due to a rather unhealthy relationship to online porn. I’m trying to stop, but I find myself unable to resist. I love my partner, and I feel guilty for not being able to regularly satisfy her. How do I figure this out?

—Yanking

Dear Yanking,

You have to start with effort. This is not a situation where you should accept—”I find myself unable to resist” is not a tenable state of existence. Resisting, even if briefly, is worth committing to if indeed your porn use and masturbation habits are interfering with your sex life. I want to be clear that I side with experts like Nicole Prause, who poke holes in the concept of porn addiction. Treating sex/porn “addiction” is a boutique industry that is vulnerable to pseudo science and promoted by grifters. That’s not to say problematic porn use isn’t a thing. The relationship you have with it certainly sounds like it qualifies. If you need outside help with it, and it sounds like you do, talk to a sex therapist, hopefully one who doesn’t have “porn addiction” in their vocabulary.

This really sums up why we need internet anonymity.
So who, exactly is anonymity for?

It's for the teenage girl who lost her mother when she was young, just got her period for the first time, and is to embarrassed to meet with a school nurse.

It's for the 45-year-old who hasn't drunk in years but is realizing that he's struggling with his sobriety and needs to talk privately about it.

It's for a woman coming to terms with the fact her boyfriend is abusive and figuring out how to get away from him without his knowledge.

It's for a Chinese immigrant who wants to speak about human rights abuses he witnessed at home without his family in Beijing paying the price for his words or repression following him abroad.

It's for a factory worker looking for resources about how to report unsafe conditions without losing his job.

It's for a college freshman who needs to talk about being gay without fearing his family will learn of it before he's ready to tell them.

It's for a grandmother who just received a breast cancer diagnosis and wants to discreetly discuss her anxiety about a mastectomy,

It's for a priest dealing with depression who doesn't know how to manage his feelings of emptiness amidst his duties to his parish.

It's for anyone who has ever experienced a fear, thought, idea or emotion that need to express but aren't ready to share with colleagues, family, friends, or acquaintances or authority figures.

People ask why we prefer Bluesky. Because we're less likely to encounter BS like this:

Someone named GinnyStimson wrote:

Answer me this.. were the women taken to the “Island “ really trafficked or are they just prostitutes now trying to justify their career choices? I bet they enjoyed the perks of the job really but that doesn’t make good conversation around the dinner table.

Our repsonse: The reason many survivors are hesitant to come forward is because of attitudes like this.
Knowing you'll never be believed no matter how much trauma or pain you've been through is its own tragedy.
Survivors deserve better.

We end up with systems that treat arrest as intervention, confuse surveillance with protection, accept family separation and incarceration as "unfortunate but necessary" Without sex workers, feminism loses the ability to recognize when “help” is coercion, or who pays the price.
Who pays the price?

Erasure never hits evenly. Policies built without sex workers land hardest on:

Black and Indigenous women

Migrants

Trans people

Disabled people

Poor and working class survivors

The margins always absorb the damage.

Did you know the attorneys general for Missouri, Kansas, and Idaho actually made the argument that fewer pregnant teens is an injury to the state in a lawsuit designed to ban access to birth control via the mail? ballsandstrikes.org/law-politics...
Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach, and Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador—all Republicans—take issue with this. Abortion access decreases teen pregnancy, and they seem to think that is a bad thing.

“Remote dispensing of abortion drugs by mail, common carrier, and interactive computer service is depressing expected birth rates for teenaged mothers in Plaintiff States,” the attorneys general allege in the complaint, which was filed before forced birth enthusiast Judge Matt Kacsmaryk in the Northern District of Texas’s Amarillo Division. They claim that decreased births constitute “a sovereign injury to the state in itself,” and causes downstream injuries like “losing a seat in Congress or qualifying for less federal funding if their populations are reduced.” In other words, uteri are state slush funds, and girls owe the state reproduction once they are capable of it.

Resources go to law enforcement to surveil sex workers

Sex workers who cannot meet legal regulations are still criminalized and at risk of arrest or deportation

second column reads:

decriminalization

Sex workers are allowed to determine when and how they work

Money can be diverted to resources for sex workers in need

What is the difference between Sex Work and Sex Trafficking?

Human trafficking is an egregious human rights violation involving the threat or use of force, abduction, deception, or other forms of coercion for the purpose of exploitation.
This may include forced labor, sexual exploitation, slavery, and more.

Sex work, on the other hand, is a consensual transaction between adults, where the act of selling or buying sexual services is not a violation of human rights.

Feminism should be a movement for all, especially those facing systemic oppression. If feminism excludes sex workers, it is failing at its core mission. The real question is whether feminism is willing to evolve beyond its historical biases and fight for all people’s safety.
A truly inclusive feminism must recognize sex workers as integral to the fight for bodily autonomy, economic justice, and human rights. The ongoing tension within feminist movements regarding sex work reveal deeper issues of exclusion, respectability politics, and reliance on carceral solutions that ultimately harm marginalized communities.

"carceral feminism" advocates for laws like the Nordic Model, which claims to punish clients rather than workers. In reality, these policies make sex work more dangerous. A feminism that relies on the prison-industrial complex to "help" people is just reinforcing state violence.
A woman looking directly into the camera.
text reads:

Carceral Feminism & the Danger of "Rescue"
One of the biggest divides in feminist discourse around sex work is between those who support decriminalization and those who push criminalization under the guise of "saving" sex workers. The latter—often referred to as "carceral feminism"—advocates for laws like the Nordic Model, which punishes clients rather than workers.

Sex work is disproportionately criminalized along racial and class lines. Women of color and trans women are more likely to be arrested, incarcerated, or experience police violence. Many white middle-class feminist perspectives have historically reinforced this violence.

#SexWorkIsWork Many enter the industry because of financial necessity, a reality that should put it squarely within feminist conversations about labor rights. If feminism is serious about economic justice, it has to take sex workers’ rights seriously, too.
Economic Justice
Sex work is, at its core, work. Many enter the industry because of financial necessity, a reality that should put it squarely within feminist conversations about labor rights, fair wages, and economic survival.

Feminism has championed the idea that people have the right to make decisions about their bodies. Criminalizing sex work strips women, trans & nonbinary folks of their agency, reinforcing the idea that choices are invalid if they don’t align with state-sanctioned respectability.
Bodily Autonomy & Choice
Feminism has long championed the idea that people should have the right to make decisions about their own bodies. If the feminist movement supports access to abortion, contraception, and sexual liberation, why should sex work be treated any differently?
