James Swift @swift.casa · 24/09/2026Heck, even if all cars were EVs but still powered by fossil power plants we'd still reduce heat by many multiples of data centre heat since a power plant is much more efficient than millions of ICEs. And reduce CO2 emissions by a massive amount, which I must stress again, is the actual big problem. 120
James Swift @swift.casa · 24/09/2026Data centres consume roughly 1.8 Exajoules of energy per year. Therefore, converting the 95% of cars that are still fossil powered to clean electricity would reduce heat output many many times more than all the data centres combined. Not to mention the zero CO2 emissions which are more important. 120
James Swift @swift.casa · 24/09/2026As you noted in your podcast 70-80% of the energy delivered to the car is wasted right away as heat but the rest, the energy immediately used to move the car, is also later released as heat via friction. Total global energy consumption of passenger cars is approximately 65 to 70 Exajoules per year, 110
James Swift @swift.casa · 24/09/2026Sure there are local problems with some data centres, but other sources of waste heat are orders of magnitude greater and easier to fix. People don't have a sense of scale of the heat that cars are generating. Some back of the envelope calculations: 220

For me, IP law is purely a financial protection mechanism. If you blopped $10M on me tomorrow, I'd rights-free everything I've done. 3021213
James Swift @swift.casa · 18/09/2026Absolutely 100% agree with this. If we (me and the guy I work with) had enough money to just have the income we have now until retirement then we would just keep doing what we do but give it away. We LOVE when people tell us they love our stuff. We could reach so many more people! 051

James Swift @swift.casa · 09/09/2026You know I'm not exactly sure. I assumed it's somewhere on the abandoned railway tracks around Swinford. The tracks run through Swinford, on to Kiltimagh close by where I grew up, and on then to Claremorris. Here's on of the rail bridges in town, maybe you can follow it to find that one?maps.app.goo.gl 120
