Chris Lilley @svgees.us · 02/10/2026This is extremely clear and easy to understand, including all the vital bits that most implementations lack. 000
Chris Lilley @svgees.us · 28/09/2026Not necessarily, it depends. They start with two master images (one hdr, one sdr). The gain map can be subsumed but need not be. The image can either br hdr+gainmap (to reconstruct sdr) or sdr+gainmap (to reconstruct hdr). The important feature is generating anywhere in between. 110
Chris Lilley @svgees.us · 28/09/2026Gain maps (and gain curves, which are more lightweight) are not an alternative to hdr. They are a way to display the same hdr image with varying amounts of hdr headroom (right down to zero, ie sdr) 100

I’ll never understand why people think it’s more likely that oklch is super weird and everyone praising it probably delusional, instead of the Occam’s razor explanation that browsers royally screwed it up. 🤷🏽♀️ 062

Chrome: uses the clipped color, so the result is at least legible 2. Safari/Firefox: uses the original, so the result is ILLEGIBLE ❌ 3. Firefox w/ gamut mapping enabled: uses the mapped color ✅ 1175
