This is extremely clear and easy to understand, including all the vital bits that most implementations lack.

NASA picture of the day today is a real 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿beauty! This is a composite image of the ~5000yo Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis. The amazing Giuseppe Petricca has only gone and photographed the Sun at noon there, every few days, for a whole year. #Dedication 🔭🧪👌 ℹ️: science.nasa.gov/image-articl...
The imposing Callanish Stones stand talk with their shadows spanning out across the glass. It's a super clear sky, but looks cold. Above the central stone is a strange figure-of-8 shape of dots. This is the location of the Sun, at noon, on various different days across the year.

🎨 Ever wondered why oklch() is so odd? Why adjusting L doesn't produce good color ramps? And why TF is L=100% not white?! I just wrote a thorough explanation of why this happens¹: github.com/web-platform... 👍 Upvote if you want this fixed in browsers in 2027! ¹ Spoiler: it’s lack of gamut mapping

Yup, gamut mapping fixes most of the “Oklch is so weird/broken” issues circulating. I’ll never understand why people think it’s more likely that oklch is super weird and everyone praising it probably delusional, instead of the Occam’s razor explanation that browsers royally screwed it up. 🤷🏽‍♀️

If you ever find yourself wondering whether a browser implements gamut mapping, here's a testcase that makes it blatantly obvious: codepen.io/leaverou/pen... Left: Chrome, Safari Right: Firefox 154 with layout.css.gamut-mapping.method=1

❓Fun CSS trivia! What do you get if you use contrast-color() on an out of gamut color? 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 1. Chrome: uses the clipped color, so the result is at least legible 2. Safari/Firefox: uses the original, so the result is ILLEGIBLE ❌ 3. Firefox w/ gamut mapping enabled: uses the mapped color ✅

16 years ago, the first public working draft of Web Open Font Format (WOFF) was published. WOFF is how downloadable fonts on the Web went from "no-one uses it" to "most sites use it". I reflected on this milestone in a blog post today: www.w3.org/blog/2026/wo...

WOFF 1.0: a milestone on W3C’s journey of fonts on the web
The anniversary of the first public release of Web Open Font Format (WOFF) is a very interesting historical milestone on the decades-long road of W3C’s work on fonts on the web.

See how my Day 2 magenta dress looks brighter than my Day 1 turquoise dress? It wasn’t! RGB gamuts are wider at magentas than turquoises. Gamut mapping is the reason you can still see it was turquoise, even though you can't see the real color 😊 Pic: P3 gamut @ L=73% apps.colorjs.io/gamut/?color...
