The United States has slid into competitive authoritarianism. The slide has been modest and remains reversible—but it is real. Even after Donald Trump, American democracy will remain fragile.

For anyone who thinks Trump’s GOP came out of nowhere, here's Art Jones in 1984 running as the "America First" candidate opposing "abortionists" & gay rights activists who wanted to end "illegal immigration," protect gun rights, establish vouchers for private schools, & end DEI measures like MLK Day
Chicago Patriot Seeks Congress
"It's time to put America first."
That's the theme that Arthur J. Jones hopes will inspire the voters of the 3rd congressional district of Illinois to send him to congress
in the fall
election.
Jones chose the theme, America First, because it is his conviction that the politicians who now rule in the nations capitol are not putting America first. In fact it seems to be the growing concern among "grass roots" America that, if any thing, the politicians have been putting America LAST! And while they put America last they are puting Israeli first.
However, before Jones can head off to Washington he must first defeat the current
Congressman
Martin
Russo. Jones is prepared therefore to battle Russo for every possible vote and is quick to point out, what he feels to be the treasonous voting record of the current Congressman.
Jones has been a political activist
since he
first became aware of the
Judaic-Communist conspiracy.
He
has worked in the campaign of George Wallace and John Schmitz, and also ran for mayor of Milwaukee on the National
Socialist
White People's
Party platform. In 1980 he revived the America First Committee and presently serves as its chairman.
RUSSO'S VOTING RECORD
Jones believes that the voting record of Martin Russo is unAmerican and destructive to the ideals of the Republic, and points out why Russo should be retired from congress.
Russo's record shows that he:
* Supports the passage of E.R.A.
* Voted 7 times in support of a
Nuclear Freeze.
* Introduced a bill to ban private ownership of guns.
*Voted for low-income,
multi-
family housing.
* Voted for the Martin Luther King
Holiday.
* Voted against the B-1 bomber and
MX Missie.
* Voted to cut-off funds to anti-Communist
forces
Central
America.
* Voted to give away the Panama
Canal.
* Opposed the sale of AWACS technology to America's best friend in the Middleast, Saudi Arabia.
*Voted to send U.S. troops into the Middleast

This is about as accurate of a description of the modern Republican party as you can write without swearing.
The present-day Republican Party is primarily right-wing populist and neo-nationalist with smaller conservative, Christian right, and libertarian factions, all of which have greatly diminished in influence since 2016. Its ideology has since largely shifted towards illiberalism, favoring strong presidential power[38][39] and a statist government to enforce conservative cultural values.[40] This includes broad opposition to abortion, LGBT rights, immigration, and gun control. On economic policy, it supports mercantilism while opposing labor unions. During the 20th and early 21st centuries, it cooperated internationally with conservative parties. Since the 2020s it has aligned with global far-right parties,[41][42][43] and white nationalist beliefs have become influential within the party,[44] including support for remigration.[45][46][47][48]
