Integrins in the kidney, beyond the matrix! These receptors mediate interactions with ECM, crucial for kidney function, by forming large adhesion complexes. #KidneyScience PMID:39643697, Nat Rev Nephrol 2025, @NatRevNeph @nkf @ASNKidney doi.org/10.1038/s41581-024-00906-1 #Medsky #Pharmsky 🧪

Integrins in the kidney — beyond the matrix | Nature Reviews Nephrology
The development and proper functioning of the kidney is dependent on the interaction of kidney cells with the surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM). These interactions are mediated by heterodimeric membrane-bound receptors called integrins, which bind to the ECM via their extracellular domain and via their cytoplasmic tail to intracellular adaptor proteins, to assemble large macromolecular adhesion complexes. These interactions enable integrins to control cellular functions such as intracellular signalling and organization of the actin cytoskeleton and are therefore crucial to organ function. The different nephron segments and the collecting duct system have unique morphologies, functions and ECM environments and are thus equipped with unique sets of integrins with distinct specificities for the ECM with which they interact. These cell-type-specific functions are facilitated by specific intracellular integrin binding proteins, which are critical in determining the integrin activation

In Friday’s Nature Briefing, we note that some scientists are rebuilding community in a little place called Bluesky… 🦋 eepurl.com/i4LHFQ
‘A place of joy’: scientists decamp to Bluesky
A wave of academics and researchers have defected from the social media platform Twitter/X, with many heading to upstart Twitter-lookalike Bluesky. Part of the attraction is the ease of gathering worthy connections through moderated lists such as the Science feed and ‘starter packs’ of scientists to follow. “I’d really like it to continue to be a place of joy for me,” says bioacoustics researcher Daryll Carlson. Others say that, despite a rise in pornography, spam, bots and abusive content on Twitter, the platform remains a valuable tool for science communication. “If good experts quit X, who will offer evidence-based input on X?” asks tuberculosis researcher Madhukar Pai.
