The Isles of Scilly have their own endemic subspecies of Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria insula). A brilliant day trip out to St Mary's last Saturday, with superb views of Tuna, two pairs of Common Dolphins, a small group of Harbour Porpoises, and a lone Grey Phalarope on the crossings.
A Scilly Speckled Wood butterfly basking amongst leaf litter. This subspecies has brown wings with rich orange spots.A wooden rowing boat with oars, nets, and crab pots resting on the white sands of Porth Hellick: a small, horseshoe-shaped cove. The granite outcrop of Camel Rock lies on the far side of the cove, beneath the heathland of Porth Hellick Down. The white sands and azure waters of St Mary's harbour. Numerous small boats are moored on buoys, with the Scillonian III ferry docked on the quay at the far side of the bay.A pair of Scilly Speckled Wood butterflies mating on a leaf. The female has her wings open, whilst the male's wings are closed.

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

The title of the article, which I link below, is "How Bear 89 earned the name Backpack"

I kinda wanna buy a typewriter to make these poems look prettier anyway this one is called “I love my wife” (it’s not called that) #poetry #literature #writing
“I look at you beside me
Freckles covered by a pizza-stained throw blanket
Smiling back at me
Through melty brown eyes alone

My God what have I done
To change a mountain of a man
Into this soft, stuffed specimen
If I leave now, I could save him
Restore the gruff, rugged texture
Release him to be overwhelmed
Rainstorm after endless storm
Rock face forever morphed grotesque
By the pain of the elements

But instead you roll over, humming sweetly
Kiss the top of my knee
I hold you as you succumb
To the comforts of home”

Traditional Japanese textile art meets Art Nouveau and early modernism in the striking patterns of this meisen silk composition: the bold, stylized forms and vivid color palette evoke the aesthetics of the Fauvist movement. 1950s, Japan
Base fabric: meisen silk, of the type heiyo-gasuri

Size style: Naga-haori

Family crests (mon) present: none

Dimensions: 49 inches (124 cm) from sleeve-end to sleeve-end and 36 inches (91 cm) in height

Traditional Japanese textile art meets Art Nouveau and early modernism in the striking patterns of this meisen silk composition. Pine motifs, rendered in a bold, modernist style, transform the traditional Japanese pine (matsu) symbol into something strikingly contemporary. These motifs, in green, pink, and white against a golden yellow background, create a dynamic composition that embodies the Japanese concept of 'notan' - the interplay between positive and negative space. Its bold, geometric interpretation of natural forms evokes the organic curves and naturalistic patterns characteristic of Art Nouveau. The color palette, particularly the use of mustard yellow as a background, reflects the influence of Japonisme on Western art while remaining distinctly Japanese in its execution. The overall design shows an interesting tension between traditional Japanese textile patterns and modernist abstraction, presaging elements that have an affinity to Op Art and Abstract Expressionism through its use of repetitive, almost hypnotic patterns and bold color contrasts. Additionally, the bold, stylized forms and vivid color palette evoke the aesthetics of the Fauvist movement, characterized by artists such as Henri Matisse and André Derain, known for their use of strong colors and abstracted forms to convey emotion. The lush greens, pinks, and yellows create a visual impact reminiscent of the wild, expressive brushwork seen in Fauvist paintings.

Snails have many enemies.
You must be careful to protect them from
• mice and rats
• shrews and moles
• walking insects that live on the ground such as ants and beetles
• slugs and other snails that eat snail meat
• birds that eat snails
• frogs and toads
• thieves

Things don't have purposes, as if the universe were a machine, where every part has a useful function. What's the function of a galaxy? I don't know if our life has a purpose and I don't see that it matters. What does matter is that we're a part.

The Floral Synthesis of Kesalan Patharan
This 1989 advertisement for the Japanese cosmetics brand Kesalan Patharan features model Oda Miyako in a striking, avant-garde composition. Styled to resemble the center of a vibrant red flower, Miyako’s face is framed by a ruffled, petal-like textile and a crown of orange, textured fibers. The meticulous application of makeup—including liquid foundation, mascara, and a bold pink lip—highlights the brand's products, which are listed in a technical legend at the bottom of the page. This image serves as a definitive document of the bold, graphic creativity that defined late 20th-century Japanese commercial design.

The Geometric Precision of Early Shōwa Graphic Art
This circa 1930 poster by Junzo Ito for the South Manchuria Railway Company (Mantetsu) is a striking example of the modernist graphic style that defined the early Shōwa era. The composition features a profile view of a woman whose elaborate, beaded headdress is rendered as an intricate field of perfectly circular motifs in shades of pale blue and white. This geometric abstraction is balanced by highly detailed ornamental sections near the ear and neck, showcasing a blend of traditional East Asian symbols and Art Deco influences. The bold vertical typography flanking the central figure reinforces the structural discipline and commercial sophistication of the period.

meditation the shape of this headache the sound of rain #haiku #haiga
A haiku written in vaguely italic script on a simple amateur line drawing of a face in 3/4 view with 4 slightly jagged curved lines, 2 bracketing the ear, two above the back of the head.

The haiku

meditation
the shape of this headache
the sound of rain

The poem is to the left of the head, overlapping the head and the outer two curved lines.
Six dotted lines represent rain.
