I logged on specially to post “what the hell was that?” but it looks like everyone got there before me. 🙂

Imagine if in the UK we had Ceefax and Oracle only for a few years, and in that time *almost nobody* ever saw it, or owned the equipment to see it. That’s pretty much the magnitude of what is being recovered here. Almost everyone is seeing this for the first time.

Absolutely *incredible* progress being made in recovering American Teletext (both kinds!) over in the decode-orc project (related to the ld-decode and vhs-decode Domesday tools) … just amazing work being done right now.

Yes it is - even Google agree. #fitbit
A Google search for “Google Health app is garbage” provides the following AI overview:

You are definitely not alone in that assessment. Since Google officially replaced the old Fitbit app with the redesigned Google Health app, users have universally slammed it for its cluttered Ul, forced Al coach, missing historical data, and step-tracking inaccuracies.

If you are dealing with the intrusive Al coach, you can disable it by navigating to your Profile Picture > Your data in Google Health > Manage feature privacy controls >
Google Health Coach and toggling it off.

However, since there is no official way to downgrade to the old Fitbit app, many users are abandoning ship and seeking more reliable alternatives.

If you want to look at switching platforms, tell me:

• What device are you using (Pixel Watch, Apple Watch, Garmin, etc.)?
• What are your primary health goals (running, sleep tracking, weight loss)?

I can help recommend a better-suited tracker or health

One interesting part of SNL UK was the live subtitling… They were obviously working from scripts (and went ahead of the actors at times) but also didn’t seem to have any of the late changes - so no subs on two Weekend Update stories, and a *completely different scene* in the Shakespeare sketch.

‘Saturday Night Live UK was terrible’ insists man who didn’t bother to watch it
A man has decided that Saturday Night Live UK is the worst thing ever to appear on television, despite not even bothering to watch the debut episode.

Twitch chatters peer-pressured me into opening up an old computer in case it had leaky batteries inside it. Which it did! And now it doesn’t. I am not skilled in such things, but armed only with some YouTube knowledge and a pair of nail clippers, hopefully I’ve made things a tiny bit better for now.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Chuck Norris is dead. Garry Who, however, is still very much alive. (No, not the personal pronoun, but rather someone with the unlikely surname of 'Who'.) So let's remember the school hols of the early 90s with this clip of 'Just for the Record': www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEXH...

Well, there's a choice of viewing tonight in the adult section, but congratulations to the BBC who appear to have comprehensively out-scheduled their competition.

Fun subtitling “fails” like these are almost always not actually a mistake by the channel, but, less excitingly, usually in the home TV or set top box that creates a unique, one-in-a million error just on one person’s screen… which social media effortlessly lets millions of others enjoy too.

Fair Political Coverage - we want to hear from ALL our parties @fairpoliticsnow.bsky.social · 26/08/2025
Yet more over platforming of REFORM on tv & radio this morning. It’s become a daily party political broadcast. You’re meant to assume Farage is now a PM in waiting. It just occurred to me that 'Go Fuck Yourself' was used by both Colbert and Stewart in last night's shows. It is also the phrase used by the Ukrainians to the Russian war ship when it asked them to surrender.

DO NOT UPDATE to iPadOS 17.7.7 - it resets most of your apps (so everything wants to register/sign in new again) and turns off Locked Private Browsing and other persistent preferences. And no changes stick, so everything is all “new phone, who dis?” all the time…

There really is a certain something about the early days of 1980s satellite TV - when you needed to have a two metre satellite dish in your garden, or were lucky enough to live in a cabled area. (Video excerpted from "UK Lifestyle TV Channel, End Of Day", a longer YouTube upload by Sid N)

This came across my desk earlier, and I have to admit that a punched-up orchestra version of 'Magic' is the soundtrack I didn't know I needed for the day. youtu.be/alBuSbDUSig?...

Does it do more harm to leave an abandoned shop in a town square, so that it might still look like a decent place to be? Or do they need to actually *see* a ghost town full of demolished buildings and boarded-up properties? I'm not sure the old place deserves even the appearance of legitimacy.

I haven’t actually used Twitter for a couple of years now (due to its incredible shittiness) but I don’t like losing touch with people, hence this account here as I guess it’s probably where a good number of people will try next.

It’s hard not to comment on the complete implosion of Twitter, but I suppose it serves as a good way to explain why I have yet another social media account now. (Honourable mention to Mastodon also, that’s quite alright too.)
